A proper understanding of God is absolutely rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The central idea of today’s text is that the mystery of God is revealed in Christ. It was vitally important to the apostle Paul that the Colossian church have a proper understanding of God, which is rooted in and inseparable from Christ.

This Thursday, November 26, millions of Americans will gather in homes across the country and observe Thanksgiving. Often, our chaotic, fast-paced, hectic lifestyles do not encourage in us a desire to be grateful. We move from one obligation and commitment to another, one appointment to another, one deadline to another, and if we are not careful, we miss the opportunity to be thankful to God for all He has done in and for us through Christ. The message this morning is a reminder to all of us to pause long enough to give thanks to God on Thanksgiving Day, in particular, for all He has done.

By far, the most serious assault of the Colossian heresy was levied at the deity of Jesus Christ. The Colossian heretics first denied Christ’s humanity. The idea that God Himself could/would become man was absurd to them. Further, they denied Christ’s deity. In today’s text, Paul sets forth a dramatic and powerful statement about the identity of Jesus Christ.

Often times we try to be so familiar with God that we miss His majesty along the way. Somewhere it the last few decades, we’ve lost the greatness and mightiness of God. So I as you today, “how big is your God?”

Think about this: Recently, a survey released by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed: “Most American religious believers, including most Christians, say eternal life is not exclusively for those who accept Christ as their Savior.” Astounding! Troubling! Disturbing! Deceiving! The patent, unswerving teaching of the Sacred Scripture is that salvation is by GRACE alone, through FAITH alone, in CHRIST alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

This morning we consider a noteworthy question: Who or what is influencing your kid? Our highest calling with our kids is to lead them to love God and to love others. Our ultimate parental objective is to lead our kids to live a God-centered life.
