How many times have we heard or used the phrase, “It all comes down to this”? In politics, the corporate arena, in relationships, medicine, critical decision-making scenarios, or sports, we often here this phrase. The key verse in 1 John is 1 John 5:12. It is the “it all comes down to this” verse!

Graduation Recognition Sunday 2009

Congratulations, graduates! We are proud of you and celebrate with you in this the first of many significant milestones in your lives. But, beware...you can now bet, dear young person, that you are a marked target by the world! The world will stop at nothing to seduce your heart, mind, and soul and lay claim to your life. All of us must heed the stunning words of the apostle John: “Do not love the world nor the things in the world…” (1 John 2:15, NASB).

1 John 5:1-15

When you stop to think about all the identities or descriptions Christians are given in the world today, you realize quickly that some of them are not exactly flattering. To be honest, Christians do not always get a fair representation as to how we are portrayed in the secualr world. However, the Word of God gives some wonderful designatoins to the people of God. One which is significant is the designatoin of being an overcomer.

The church can never stop growing! Why? Because God loves people. God commands us to reach out to others. And, the growth of the church is the desire of God. Yet, how does God measure the church? Is it by our budget, attendance, net worth of our facilities, number of new members annually, or number of ministries? No. The text this morning informs us of the means by which God measures the church.

Throughout history there have been those who have praised Jesus as a good, moral man; as a thoughtful, ethical teacher; or as a messenger, one sent by God. Yet, these descriptions of Jesus, while accurate, are woefully incomplete. Not much has changed throughout history right up to contemporary times. In today’s text, the apostle John warns the church to test teachers who claim to give inspired teaching for that teaching’s source.
