WE LEARN. SO. MUCH. Our first ever featured guest and friend Adam (lawyer, stand-up comic and DJ) joins us this week to discuss contracts and consent in the eyes of the law. We go over Christian and Ana’s contract from Fifty Shades of Grey - and discuss whether a contract like this one would hold up in court. We also discuss what we understand “consent” to mean legally.
(Disclaimer - Adam’s expertise comes from his professional training and professional experience in Canadian Law, which may vary in other countries.)

Below are references to the cases which Adam references in this episode!
Upfill v. Wright, [1911] 1 K.B. 506 (K.B.D.); the case about the landlord renting to a mistress.
R. v. J.A., 2011 SCC 28, the Canadian case about the ability to consent in advance to sexual activity while unconscious.
R. v. Brown, [1993] UKHL 19, the British case about the group of gay men charged with assault. (For more information about R. v. Brown, you can also Google Operation Spanner, the name of the police operation that led to the arrests.)
R. v. Wilson, [1996] Crim LR 573, the U.K. case about the husband who consensually branded his wife's buttocks.
For the very important facts that Adam was not able to remember about Lori Douglas - the Canadian judge who was forced to retire when bondage photos of her disseminated by her husband without her consent became public, start with this article from the Winnipeg Sun.
