Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are introducing a new segment to the podcast I'm calling Film Haven Classics where I bring on my buddy Geoff Bretches and we discuss the film adaptations of classic novels! This week we are discussing Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera!!
We focused and the 1925 silent film as well as the 2004 musical, finding that each adaptation brought its own spin and attitude the source material while also staying true to the main plot points. We also discuss the gothic themes in the story as well as its hybrid nature, transitoning into a pulp story by the end. Its a fascinating discussion so give it a listen!
If you want to see more content from Geoff here are some of the places he is at! I highly recommend reading his substack!

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are finishing up our "Disturbia" theme with the Randy Quaid film Parents (1989)
I unfortunately was pretty diappointed in this film. There wasn't alot of substance or progression to it. I gave it a 5/10 for some good performances and some great cinematography, but other than that its a total dud.

Welcome Back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our "Disturbia" theme with the classic satire The 'Burbs (1989).
This movie was so much fun and had some awesome and humorous performances. I gave this a 7/10 for being clever and funny, but dragging a bit in parts and unveiling the mystery a little too early.

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews! This week we are starting a new "Disturbia" theme with the Danny DeVito directed The War of the Roses (1989).
This was such a fun film and one that rode the line between darkness and comedy well. I gave this a 7.5/10 for its excellent performances and very competent directing from DeVito. I highly recommend!

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing out our "Dummy/Doll" horror theme with the Antony Hopkins film Magic (1978)
This was certainly a unique film with some wonderful performances, although I maybe wanted a little more. I gave this movie a 7/10 for Hopkins acting and some solid psychological horror, even if I found the story a little uneven and unbelievable.

Welcome back to Film Haven Revews!!! This week we are continuing our "Dummy/Doll" horror theme with the very on the nose film Dolls (1986).
This was a fun watch with lots of camp and good spooky atmosphere. I gave this movie a 7/10 for not taking itself too seriously and having some amazing practical doll effects two whole years before Child's Play would come out.

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a new theme of "Dummy/Doll Horror" with the James Wan film Dead Silence (2007)
This movie certainly wasnt the best, but it did have enough to enjoy for horror fans to make it fun and entertaining to watch. I gave this a 6.5/10 for its good atmosphere, cool concept, but bad writing and worse acting.

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week the Movie Club girls are back to talk about two new big horror movies that have been making waves, Obsession (2026) and Backrooms (2026)
In the ep, we dsicuss the fact that both films are directed by GenZ directors and also how they both overperformed at the box office cosidering their meager budgets. There was alot to get into with both films so go listen if you want to hear our opinions.
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are finishing up our "Prime Merly Streep" theme with one of her best performances Sophie's Choice (1982)
This movie was so well acted and well written I highly encourage anyone who has not seen it to give it a shot as it is iconic for a reason! I gave this film an 8.5/10 for its incredible story and even better performances.
