The dudes tackle their first romantic comedy with 1990's Joe Versus the Volcano. Strangely, the dude who claims to not like romantic comedies sure seems to like this movie more than the dude who doesn't claim to not like romantic comedies. And speaking of volcanoes, this episode's trivia battle is so seismically violent, Jordan and Nic have to add a new element to the game.
Also, Nic has an irrational hatred for 1997's Trojan War. It only made $309 at the box office. Hasn't it suffered enough?

All that and more on this very special 20th episode of Filmshake!

Songs featured in this episode:

"Love Theme from Joe Versus the Volcano" -- Georges Delerue
"Sixteen Tons" -- Written by Merle Travis, performed by Eric Burdon

In August of this year, Nic decided Filmshake should watch 1995's Congo, so the show could have a tribute episode to author, Michael Crichton. But "this year" is 2020, and things did...not go as expected. Why the hell does Nic hate Congo so much? Why does Jordan love Congo so much? Does Congo have naked pictures of Jordan? Did Congo murder Nic's father?
Rationality goes out the window in the most ridiculous, lowstakes 90-minute argument in history. Also, the two try to talk about 1998's Sphere, but everything keeps coming up Congo.
There's also the usual episode ending trivia battle, but somebody doesn't even try this time.

It's the definitive Alien³ podcast! This is a deep dive, featuring a dissection of this exponentially-titled film's themes, comparisons between the original and assembly cuts, thoughts on its place in the Alien franchise...and also Nic breaks out into a 20-minute monologue about nihilism. For those who wish a podcast that covers films like Wild Wild West would give their movie selections a deeper analysis, these two hours comprise our longest non-bonus episode, and reference, in short, the works of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, Alan Pratt, Martin Heidegger, and early 20th century Welsh poetry.
Also, Jordan reports back on 1992's Nemesis, which he was made to watch because he lost last episode's trivia battle. Will he ever win? Or is life just a cold, meaningless void?

Jordan and Nic go 27 years into the past to travel 12 years into the future, by watching 1993's Demolition Man. Jordan finds some disturbing parallels to modern day America, while Nic has an existential crisis because he can't figure out if this is a dumb smart movie, or a smart dumb movie.
Meanwhile, Jordan reports back on Stallone's 1987 armwrestling romp, Over the Top. For better or worse, it's all Stallone all the time on Episode 17 of Filmshake!

Jordan and Nic steal the air, or at least spend 70-minutes filling it with high praise for 1990's Pump Up the Volume. If their love for Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis had any kind of ceiling, the pieces are on the floor.
Jordan reports back on 1998's Firestorm, and tries to avoid getting mercilessly beaten by Nic at trivia yet again. No spoilers, but this episode's winner knew the deciding question's answer because they heard it from another podcast, which if you can't make out from the episode's unhinged, post-trivia mayhem, is the awesome, 80-s flick-centric Good Times Great Movies, Check them out here: https://goodtimesgreatmovies.com/

Third time's the charm, as Jordan and Nic finally figure out this long distance podcasting thing just in time to have a Broken Arrow lovefest. How awesome are Christian Slater and John Travolta in this movie? It isn't quantifiable! Everything in this movie is awesome! We've never been this positive about anything! We just can't stop talking about it...for 98 minutes!

Also, Jordan recaps The Asylum's Monster Island, and actually bothers to write trivia questions to take Nic down in this episode's battle. Whoever wins, one thing's for sure: somebody's gonna have to recap yet another lousy movie to kick off the next episode.

The most destructive monster in movie history meets the director whose movies have shown the destruction of nearly every major American landmark, for one giant disaster of a film.
It's 1998's Godzilla!
It's 1998's Godzilla.
Why is this movie so boring? Why can't America make a decent Godzilla film? Jordan and Nic try to figure out why, as they also continue to try to figure how to record things when they aren't sitting in their cushy library studio together. Nic also recaps Nine Lives, a movie where Christopher Walken transforms Kevin Spacey into a cat, yet is still somehow more boring than Godzilla. He probably shouldn't have lost at trivia...but if he wins this episode's battle, how brutal will be his revenge?

When Jim West, in his theme song, declared "No, you don't want nada," Jordan and Nic should have listened. When Jordan told Nic, "Are you sure you want to watch Wild Wild West?" Nic should have put some thought into why Jordan might be asking that question. Instead, for their first episode quarantined away from each other, Filmshake is talking about the 1999 cinematic plague, Wild Wild West.
Why is this movie so sex-obsessed? Why is this movie? And what did Kevin Kline ever do to Nic? Jordan and Nic try to figure it out, and it takes them longer to do so than on any other episode they've ever recorded together. Maybe they just missed hearing each other's voices.
The duo also discuss The VelociPastor. It's a movie about a VelociPastor.
Make sure you stick around after the wicky-wicky credits.
Please forgive the periodic crazy electronic chirps. We're still figuring this out!...or it’s just interference from Dr. Lovelace.

Jordan and Nic finally get into this hunting humans for sport thing they've been hearing about. But one does not simply hunt Ice-T. One must first dress him in a sweet vest, which they don't even mention in this episode...NO!!! Thankfully, they do mention every other awesome (and not-so-awesome) thing about Surviving the Game, a movie where Ice-T and Gary Busey (FINALLY!) fight to the death! Speaking of death, Jordan reports back on Born American, Renny Harlin's 1986 attempt at blowing up half of Russia.
Turns out Finland also loves explosions!
