He’s only been there a year, but in the lead up to Christmas he wants what all cops want over the silly season, a little peace. Of course there’s some petty crime like a ute driving through the front door of the pub, but otherwise, so far, so peaceful. Then on his rounds one morning Hirsch encounters a distressed horse and follows it home to find a horrific scene.

As the investigation begins a mysterious call comes through from Sydney and Hirsch has to do a routine welfare check on a family outside of town. A family no one seems to know existed…

It is the English winter of 1962, a cold snap so severe that it will come to be known as ‘The Big Freeze’, and snow blankets the country. Radford is immediately suspicious of his new home and companions and vows to remain aloof. Goodwin Manor is a home for boys ‘found by trouble’ and there is a saying that it only takes two things to get there; a reason, and a final straw.

Damascus tells the story of Saul of Tarsus. Saul was a Greek speaking Jew, a tent-maker who some two thousand years ago was met on the road to Damascus by a blinding light and was convinced that he must bring the teachings of the Jewish prophet Jesus to the world.

Damascus is a story perhaps well known to many, while others may not have encountered the tent-maker whose letters came to spread Christianity to the world. .

Boundless is a festival of Indigenous and culturally diverse writers, The festival is happening on Saturday October 26 at Bankstown Arts Centre and is presented by Writing NSW and Bankstown Arts Centre in association with Sweatshop.

Winnie Dunn is a Tongan-Australian Writer from Mount Druitt. She’s the General Manager of Sweatshop: the Western Sydney Writers Movement and will be appearing at the festival.
