Final Fantasy VII, Recap Part 4 | Mole Patrol
Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and his “Mole Patrol” co-host Brooklyn Zed (@hardrockhope), aka Zed XIII, get together to talk about the seminal video game “Final Fantasy VII.” There’s just one catch: Josh has played “Final Fantasy VII” dozens of times; this is Zed’s first trip to Midgar.
It’s a podcast designed for longtime “Final Fantasy” fans and newcomers alike — in fact, it’s for people who have always wanted to know the story of “Final Fantasy VII,” but have no interest or ability to play the game itself. If that describes you, you’re in luck. As Zed makes their way through their first playthrough of “Final Fantasy VII,” they will be stopping by this very podcast spot with Wigler to talk through the storyline, the game mechanics, and much more as tremendous shenanigans ensue.
For the uninitiated: “Final Fantasy VII” was a groundbreaking 1997 Japanese role-playing game that defined the video game medium, let alone the RPG genre and the “Final Fantasy” franchise writ large. It centers on Cloud Strife, a sword-wielding mercenary with a troubled past, as he joins up with members of a resistance group called AVALANCHE set on toppling a nefarious power-hungry corporation called Shinra. Many friends and enemies are made in the process, as Cloud and his allies uncover the truth about Shinra’s intentions and even more chilling details about old magic permeating the planet.
In this week’s podcast, Josh and Zed resume an old favorite activity: MOLE PATROL! One of Cloud’s friends isn’t who they say they are. Making matters worse, one of Cloud’s friends is also just kind of terrible. Maybe that’s two of Cloud’s friends … hrm. A few terrible happenings in this week’s episode as Zed recruits the final two members of their party, loses all their materia, and returns to the Gold Saucer to come face-to-face with a spy.
If you want to play along while you listen to the podcast journey, “Final Fantasy VII” is available on various platforms: Nintendo Switch, PS4, Steam and even the original PSX version, assuming you, like Zed, still have an old-school system.
Of course, there’s also “Final Fantasy VII Remake,” the next gen spin on the classic game which was released in 2020. Wigler and Ken Hoang hosted podcasts about that game; find them here.

In this week’s podcast, Josh and Zed dive deep into two different characters: Barret Wallace, leader of AVALANCHE; and Red XIII, a fire-tailed, four-legged enigma of a creature. Both of these party members step into the spotlight as Josh and Zed visit them on their home turf: the destitute town of North Corel (and, by extension, the glowing Gold Saucer theme park), and the spiritual destination known as Cosmo Canyon.

In this week’s podcast, Josh and Zed explore the world map. Now that they are free from Midgar, Zed is learning all about Cloud and his bitter rivalry with Sephiroth, a former member of SOLDIER who has become a deadly crusader in his own right. Cloud’s travels take him from the small town of Kalm to the large port city of Junon; along the way, he has a chance to make a new friend, protect some condors, and ride on top of a sea creature named Mr. Dolphin. It’s a lot.

In this first podcast, Josh and Zed talk through the first five or so hours of the video game — or eight and a half hours at Zed’s pace. It’s the entire first run through Midgar, starting with the opening mako reactor bombing mission, all the way through the motorcycle escape from Shinra headquarters. Next time, Josh and Zed will talk through the first steps in the open world all the way through the trip across the ocean from Junon.

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Ken Hoang (@liquidken) have both finished their runs through Midgar, and they have returned to tell their tale.
In their latest podcast about Final Fantasy VII Remake, Josh and Ken skip right to the end — which means, yes, this is a full-blown spoilers podcast. If you have not yet finished Final Fantasy VII Remake, you will want to do that before you listen to this or any other subsequent podcasts about this game. The toothpaste is out of the tube (or the mako out of the reactor, if that works better!), and there’s no going back.
As a bonus, Josh and Ken spend some time digging their teeth into Survivor: Winners at War. Major spoilers for the season finale come toward the end of this podcast.

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Ken Hoang (@liquidken) ride through Midgar, covering chapters five through eight of Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake.
In this podcast, Josh and Ken pick up where they left off: hopping aboard a train bound for another mako reactor mission. Josh and Ken grind through the various dungeons just like Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart and Barret Wallace barreling through Shinra goons and the Air Buster alike. Then they reach Sector Five — specifically, a church populated by one Aerith Gainsborough, the flower peddler. Josh and Ken talk through their journey with Cloud and Aerith as they run around smashing boxes, and even run into an old friend of Ken’s from Survivor: Gabon.

In this podcast, Josh and Ken give their first impressions of the updated take on Final Fantasy VII, what it’s like to explore the expanded Midgar, tips and tricks for playing as Cloud Strife, assessments of the new materia system, war stories from herding cats and fighting dogs (among other side quests), throwing darts at the Seventh Heaven bar, takes on the brand new characters (we see you, Roche) and the return of some fan-favorites (the expansion of Avalanche, plus the returns of Tifa and Barret), some serious questions about Sephiroth and these new hooded monsters, and more.

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) is known for loving LOST and Survivor, but he has yet to podcast about one of his all-time favorite pieces of pop culture — until now.
Welcome to the beginning of our Final Fantasy VII coverage on Post Show Recaps, as the classic role-playing video game returns in new form more than two decades after its initial release. In the wake of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Josh is embarking on a journey through Final Fantasy nostalgia alongside someone who knows a thing or two about the game: professional Smash King Ken Hoang (@LiquidKen) of Survivor: Gabon fame.
In their first podcast together, Josh and Ken wax poetic about their own experiences with Final Fantasy VII, a spoiler-light summary of the storyline, and some expectations of what to expect from the remake. In the next few podcasts, they’ll dig deeper into the remake specifically, and even look past that scope and into the broader possibilities of the Final Fantasy adaptation.
