  • How to Budget in 15 Minutes or LESS Per Day

When I was stressed with my finances and was learning to budget, I didn’t want the budgeting to consume my life and take up a lot of time. I am a busy mom to 3 boys. And at the time I learned to budget and “get good with my money”, I worked as a Registered Nurse and had a part-time photography business. So, the way I wanted to budget needed to be quick and simple.

I started by tracking my spending and bills on an app called, The EveryDollar app. I used the free version. There is a paid version where you can link your bank account, but I didn’t want to do that. Plus, I didn’t want to spend any more money on things I didn’t need.

My husband and I had a mountain of debt, $100,000 of debt and that didn’t include our house. So, when I wanted to figure out a budget, I needed the tools and resources I used to be free!

Once you have an idea of what your budget categories should be and how much money you need to budget for each category you can cut back on tracking every single expense. There are a couple of quick + simple budgeting methods I suggest using if you do not want to have to continue tracking every single transaction or expense.

The Plan Ahead and the 50/30/20 budgeting methods are two great methods to use if you are a busy mom or want to lump together some of your expenses. You can lump your spending into “buckets” and spend out of there. I have written a blog post explaining each of these budgeting methods in depth so feel free to read those.

  • Embrace Your Fears

Embracing your fears and stepping outside your comfort zone is difficult. It can take a lot of soul-searching and deep breathing through your fears. It is not easy, but man is it worth it.

We recently took a family trip (with friends) to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. On our agenda was white water rafting (my idea). I have always wanted to go white water rafting, but as I have gotten older and had a few babies I am literally scared of everything, especially when I don’t have any control over what is going to happen.

We also took the chair lift up to the top of a mountain to the Gatlinburg Skybridge which is the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America. It is 1,800 feet above sea level! Now, I get a little motion sickness, I don’t like heights, and wobbly bridges over a ravine are not my idea of a good time. BUT, I walked the bridge and even went across the part in the middle of the bridge that has a glass floor. I seriously have a video on my Instagram account of me walking across it and talking myself through it. Go check it out!

Your mind and body might try talking you out of being uncomfortable. I didn’t want to go on the raft. In fact, I almost had a panic attack when we were driving to the water. My body was getting lots of yucky and anxious feelings. But I told myself I would do it and I got into the raft all by myself. I had to focus on other things, I had to tell myself that it was going to be ok, and I would have fun, and I said A LOT of prayers.

Positive self-talk is a must when embracing your fears. We have to be proud of ourselves when we accomplish something that is difficult and hard for us. I was so stinking proud of myself after white water rafting. I still am. It is a memory and experience I will cherish forever.

  • Don't Edit Yourself

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. I only changed my ways of spending and money management because I was so stressed out and anxious about the way we were spending our money. I formed to the masses, tried keeping up with the Joneses and I decided I didn't want to do that any longer.

Being genuine and authentic is beginning to seem like a lost art. There are so many people who are copying others, being fake, and editing their real selves to be like others. What makes you different are your unique qualities. We need to seek to find our true selves.

Don’t edit yourself to fit in. Don’t form into the shape that others want you to be. Be a star when everyone else is a circle. Dig deep to find who you really are. Go back to the basics.

We all need to focus on self-care, recovering from trauma, and gaining clarity on blurry areas in our lives. You can walk through life with your head in the sand and not seek to understand. You can drive through life, going Mach 80, and not take the time to see the scenery. But is that what you truly want? Do you want to miss out on your dream life? Do you want to pass by those beautiful lookout spots on the side of the road?

We all have things in our lives that we want to forget and not deal with. But that is not helping us. We need to take the bull by the horns and deal with our discomfort and overwhelm. Don’t let life pull you back, keep moving forward, but do that while dealing with the past and mistakes. Don’t try to cope by using poor coping mechanisms to numb the pain. Pain can be a good thing when you are facing things head-on. Don’t use alcohol, sleep, food, or distraction as a way to cope.

  • How To Budget On A Low Income

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years! Say, what?!?!?

Everyone, on every income level low or high, NEEDS to have a budget. I know, a budget can be a scary word. But a budget is needed no matter how much money you make.

If you have a low income, you definitely need to have a budget, to simply tell your money where to go.

There were many times before I started to do a monthly budget, that I didn’t know where my hard-earned money went. I would get my paycheck and I swear, a week later, my money was gone. My money was like my socks that disappear from my dryer. I swear, those things sprout legs and just up and walk away. You DO NOT want your money to find legs and run away.

So, how do you budget on a low income?

Budgeting is a simple task, however, it is not always easy, especially in the beginning.

Here are a few steps to starting to budget:

    1.    Write down ALL of your income (Job, side hustles )

    2.    Write down ALL of your expenses (bills, food, debt payments)

    3.    Look over the last 3 months of your spending

    4.    Prioritize your spending (start with your 4 walls: Shelter, Food, Transportation, and Utilities)

    5.    Make sure you have a small Emergency Fund (savings account for emergencies)

    6.    Cut costs- Find places that you can cut out of your spending (lots of times this is going out to eat, pre-packaged foods, snacks, etc)

    7.    Use Cash- you are likely to spend LESS money when you pay with cash

  • What is a Financial Coach and Why You Need One

I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years. Say, what?!?!

Do you feel stuck with your money? Do you feel like you can’t get ahead on your bills or that you are using credit cards to afford your lifestyle? Have you tried to budget and feel that you failed at it? Do you bring in an income? Do spend money? Do you work? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you would benefit greatly from hiring a financial coach.

A Financial Coach can help you manage your money. By hiring a Financial Coach, they will help you create a custom and individualized plan and make goals with your money. You can figure out and google pretty much anything related to money. However, finances are 80% emotions and only 20% head knowledge. This means that even if you KNOW what to do with your money, you might have a hard time with the follow through. There is also no single right way to manage your money. You need a tailored plan for you and your money

Hiring a Financial Coach will save you money
. They will help you make and achieve certain SMART goals. Do you like to have an accountability partner? I sure do! A Financial Coach will be just that, your accountability partner with your money. They will keep you on track and guide you along the way. A Financial Coach will work with you to form new healthy habits that you are happy with.

    Hiring a financial coach will:

     1.    Save you money

    2.    Be your accountability partner

    3.    Help you achieve SMART goals

    4.    Keep you on track with your money goals and personal goals

    5.    Form healthy and happy habits

    6.    Set you up for long-term success

    7.    Teach you how to prioritize your expenses

A good Financial Coach will set you up for long-term success. Short-term success is fun because you see it right away. You get that hit of dopamine as soon as you see the success. Hopefully, with a good Financial Coach, you will see success right away. But you really want to be set up for long-term success. As new habits form, these will allow you to be in it for the long run

  • 10 Things I Learned From Paying Off My Debt

I learned many things while paying off debt and after I paid off $100,000 of debt in less than 2 years!

    1.     My relationships matter more than “things”

    2.     There are always more things to buy- the list is never-ending

    3.     Saving money to buy things you want and having to wait longer to save rather than using debt to purchase that thing sooner, puts things into perspective

    4.     Waiting shows my true colors

    5.     It feels soooo good to pay things in cash

    6.     I feel more in control of not just my money but myself

    7.     Take time to learn + change through the journey

    8.     Paying off debt a little slower and allowing yourself time to still enjoy life is best

    9.     Something always comes up, like things to buy, so being debt free, (besides our house), allows us to buy those things a little easier than when we had debt

    10.  I was under so much stress and had so much anxiety when I was under the pressure of a mountain of debt

Read my blog post where I go into detail on each of these 10 things that I learned from paying off my debt at pursecoach.com/blog or link in bio

  • How We Are Teaching Our Boys To Be Responsible With Money

My 3 boys like to spend my money. Full stop. Sometimes they are understanding when I say “no” to them when they ask me to buy them something and sometimes, they are not understanding. Each of the 3 have their own personalities and this applies to their spending habits as well.

We teach them to value of a dollar, to work hard, to save before they spend, to value their time, and to be content and happy with what they have.

  • How to Afford Kids' Sports

Youth sports, you’ve got to love them, but they can be expensive. Seriously, when did youth sports become so spendy?! I will be the first to admit I am not very educated on sports, but my 3 boys play a few sports now and have played many sports throughout their childhood. I know that all sports can be expensive, but there are ways to afford your children’s sports.

Here is my #1 tip on how to afford kids'/youth sports...you don't have to buy it all! Don't go into debt for your kids to play sports. They can play sports without you spending your whole life savings for them to have fun.

I talk concessions, packing lunches, team meals, carpooling, sports family, equipment buying, and so much more in this podcast!
