In this episode, I wanted to take some time to reflect on 2024 and encourage you to do the same. With the end of the year approaching, it’s the perfect time to look back on what this year has taught us before diving into new goals for 2025.
Highlights from My Year
At the start of 2024, I felt strong coming off completing two marathons the previous year. Early in the year, I really deepened my knowledge of running, especially Zone 2 training, which has been a game-changer. It’s helped me not just in my own running but also in coaching others to improve their performance.
One of the biggest milestones for me this year was my first skin surgery in June. After eight years of waiting and preparing, it finally became a reality. It felt like the year flew by because of that. Recovery was tough—I spent 2.5 to 3 months away from the gym, which was a huge adjustment. But in that time, I learned how deeply connected my mental health is to the gym and how I could survive without my usual routine.
Lessons I’ve Learned
This year taught me a lot about my body, especially as I’ve entered my 40s. I turned 41 recently, and I’ve noticed that weight doesn’t come off as easily as it did six or seven years ago. My body seems to count every morsel I eat, so I’ve had to be more mindful of how, when, and what I eat.
One thing that’s worked for me is a loose form of intermittent fasting—not eating until 12 or 12:30 most days. It’s not about trying to lose weight; it’s just what feels good for my body and fits my busy schedule with the kids. It’s a new habit I’ve picked up this year, and I’m going to stick with it because it works for me.
Another huge lesson came from running. I paced a marathon in 4 hours and 29 minutes recently, and it was smooth—no cramping, no struggles. That’s a huge difference from my first marathon, where I made mistakes with hydration and nutrition. I’ve learned to prioritize sodium and take gels every 3 miles instead of every 5. These lessons weren’t failures; they were opportunities to grow.
Why Reflection Matters
As we come to the end of the year, I want to challenge you to look back on 2024. Take a moment to reflect on where you started in January and how far you’ve come—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. What have you learned?
I often talk about journaling, and this is the perfect time to do it. Go through your year month by month, using photos or memories as a guide, and write down the lessons you’ve learned. Don’t focus on failures—there’s no such thing as failure, only lessons.
For me, this year was about surviving challenges. I learned I could handle being away from the gym for months, and I know I’ll survive my second skin surgery when the time comes. I’ve grown in my knowledge of running, my understanding of my body, and my mental resilience.
Final Thoughts
Before you start planning for 2025, take some time to reflect on this year. What did you learn? Where did you grow? Reflection is powerful—it helps us move forward with intention.
Find a way, my friends. That’s it for this episode, and I’ll talk to you soon!
