In this episode, Mark & Annette have an open, vulnerable conversation with Julie Cluff. Julie has a story that honestly none of us want to own. As you listen to this episode, you will realize that you have the power within to build a beautiful life after loss.
In 2007 Julie's two youngest children died in a car accident – her daughter Carrie was ten, and her son David was 8. Julie describes the first three years as absolute hell. She felt so fragile, and she knew that nothing in her life would ever be the same.
She worked with a therapist to overcome my PTSD – caused by driving the car that rolled over and changed their lives forever. She fought every day to get up in the morning and try to make sense of her new reality. One of the first things Julie learned was not to judge or let anything anyone said affect her which helped me move forward in relationships...
On the 3rd anniversary almost to the day, things changed. Julie started to feel more like she could cope. Her therapist proclaimed her DONE. She did not feel done. Yes, Julie was better but she didn't know where to start to truly rebuild my life.
Julie realized that she had already experienced the worst thing that could happen, which created a weird mix of fear and courage inside her. Julie began building new experiences and creating a new identity. It was a relief when her friends and family could finally perceive her beyond the tragedy.
In 2012 Julie had a profound experience that sent her on a search for even more answers. Julie knew she was being directed to help others who had experienced an overwhelming loss like I had, but how do I do that?
Then one day, while listening to Brooke Castillo's podcast from The Life Coach School, Julie had an aha moment. She knew exactly what she meant when she described her lost feelings after therapy. And she explained that therapy looks back to work on diagnosed mental issues whereas coaching looks forward to inspire and create a life of goals and dreams.
Julie Cluff is an intuitive grief coach and the founder of Build a Life After Loss, a company dedicated to helping those who are grieving navigate grief and personal healing. She's the host of the popular Build a Life After Loss podcast, a speaker, and the author of the book Miracles in the Darkness. Mark & Annette had an inspiring conversation with Dorsey Ross. Dorsey was born on January 16th, 1977, with a congenital disability known as Apert’s Syndrome. When Dorsey was born, his forehead was pushed outward, his nose and mouth were pushed inward, and his fingers and toes were fused, meaning he had no individual movement of them. Doctors gave Dorsey’s parents no hope for his survival and advised them to put him into an institution. His parents both knew and trusted in God, and they believed that God would do great things in Dorsey’s life. Throughout his life, Dorsey has had to overcome a lot of obstacles, and trials, being bullied, called names like monster and freak, and undergone multiple operations.
Teachers told Dorsey he would not make it in college, and with all odds against him, he entered Queens Borough Community College. After four years there, and after attaining an associate degree, he entered the University of Valley Forge. After years of hard work and perseverance, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Youth Ministry. His life saying is, “can’t is not in my vocabulary” because, for most of his life, he has never used the word can’t. He believes that with God, all things are possible and that he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. It’s with God’s help he is overcoming life’s obstacles.

What defines you? What do you stand for? If your answer is "I don't know", then it's time to find out! And I believe that once we understand what God has called us to be and do, our lives will never be the same again. So let me ask: Who are YOU going to be today?
A lot of people think that what you learn from trauma is to avoid it at all costs. But Dr. Lise Deguire learned some unexpected lessons about life, love, and courage. This episode shares how Dr. Deguire's experience as a burn survivor has taught her valuable lessons that we can learn from!
At the age of four, Dr. Lise Deguire suffered third-degree burns on 65% of her body as the result of both maternal and corporate negligence. Against the odds, she lived through the trauma, beginning decades of treatment as a burn survivor. Lise chats with Annette and Mark about her journey touching on early events, including the story of the fire, her years of painful surgeries in the hospital, social isolation, and bullying.
Dr. Deguire recounts her childhood with two narcissistic parents and their futile struggles to find happiness. She tells her family's tragic story, which includes artistic genius, stark neglect, and four suicides. Most importantly, she explains her long but ultimately triumphant path towards love, health, and life satisfaction.
