Naomi Stadlen works as an existential psychotherapist in private practice and specialises in seeing mothers and parent couples. Naomi teaches and supervises at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling. 

An important part of what Naomi has done for over 30 years, is to run a group called Mothers Talking, a discussion group where mothers can share their experiences. Through her work, Naomi has written several books on motherhood and most recently grandmothers. 

The inspiration for her books comes from her own experiences as well as all the hundreds of people she has spoken to. Her books include the bestselling:

Since becoming a mother I have become particularly interested in the vast complexities that come with this role, the unique relationship to your baby and dare I say it yourself. I have become aware of how different experiences can be and how valuable talking about them is. So, in this episode I hope to be able to tap into Naomi’s findings, because as she quoted “Plato recalling Socrates: 'The unexamined life is not worth living.'

Dr Leslie Lund is an Adolescent Psychotherapist who has over 20 years’ experience working with young people and their families, specialising her work to adolescents and families who come from privileged backgrounds. 

She has spent many years researching this cohort of our society finding out about their specific challenges and psychological issues such as: depression, anxiety, self-harm and substance abuse. 
Alongside her practice and her research, Leslie founded CYPPE (Counselling for Young People from Privileged Environments) hoping that this organisation would aid her in sharing her knowledge within this subpopulation and collaborate with colleagues in the development of therapeutic interventions that can support the mental health of privileged youths. 
In 2004 Leslie went on to found the Surrey Counselling and Psychotherapy Initiative (SCPI), a professional members organisation that offers support and professional development to therapists. As well co-founding the Dorking and District Mental Health Project that provides support services within the community. Leslie also supervises and supports families, schools and school counsellors.

In recent years I have noticed how attachment theory has gained a lot of popularity, it is a theory that seems to resonate with so many of us. My feeling is that attachment theory has become popular because it helps us all to get an understanding of how our past relationships influence those in our present and it makes sense. However, as it is often the case when theoretical models are made popular, they can be over simplified and misunderstood. My hope is that through this conversation, attachment theory can be explained in a way that is simple but not simplistic, giving it the credit due.

Dr Maria Luca worked as the Head of the Regent’s Centre for Relational Studies and Psychological Well-Being, Course Leader of the PhD programme in Psychotherapy & Psychology and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Psychological Therapies. She has extensive experience as a NHS, UKCP accredited psychotherapist and MBACP accredited and UKCP recognised psychotherapy supervisor. She edited two books, the first on the Integrative Frame and the second on Sexual Attraction in therapy, both leading, international texts. She has co-authored her third book on Integration in Psychotherapy – New Directions. She has published several papers in peer reviewed journals. She is an Editorial Board Member and Consulting Editor, Article and Book Reviewer, Book Endorser and Book Reviews Editor for international, peer reviewed journals and publishers.

Her previous administrative roles include Head of the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology. Maria has taught at British Universities and presented research papers internationally. She has supervised several PhD students to completion.

Discussing the origin of psychiatry, diagnosis and mental illness. 


Dr Bill Young is a Consultant Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatrist working across independent, not-for-profit and academic sectors. His special interests include mindfulness-based interventions, school wellbeing, clinical addictions in adolescence, and child refugee mental health. 

 I was lucky enough to get to know Dr Bill during my training as he lectured us for a term, teaching us the medical stance on mental illness, diagnosis’s and treatment. In my experience anyone trying to grapple with mental health can benefit from gaining a sense of what Psychiatry is, how it works and when to use it. I have often found that there are a lot of preconceptions when thinking of psychiatry. I personally used to find it hard not to think of a doctor in a white coat, asylums and the hard history that often illustrated in films. The hope here, is that we can all gain an alternative understanding, a human, tangible and relatable sense of this invaluable specialty. 

In this episode Dr Bill helps us see  how psychiatry is unique and unlike any other specialty to medicine. Psychiatry is looking to treat and diagnose something that is not always physical, it is interpreting a subjective experience into symptoms that inform a treatment plan. The aim is to consider those who are suffering, those who are ill. However illness also means that you can fall out of illness and become better.

Daniel Mirea is an accredited CBT consultant, senior lecturer, researcher and writer who trained and worked with some of the most recognisable clinicians in the United States and the UK.

Having a particular interest in low self-esteem, childhood trauma and deeply rooted feelings of ‘shame and guilt’ Daniel Mirea developed his own behavioural model called NeuroAffective-CBT focused on earlier traumas, shame and self-loathing. Daniel Mirea works as a medico-legal expert with trauma victims of terror incidents, violence or work related accidents but at the other end of the spectrum also with professional athletes or personalities from within the London arts, theatre and media community, looking to enhance and improving performance.
