Also in the documentary is Tom Doyle. We will be hearing audio clips from him.  He is a Dominican priest and a former chaplain and lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, a canon lawyer who wrote the section on marriage in Pope John Paul II's revised Code of Canon Law from 1983.
Twenty-five years ago he was warning the US bishops and the Vatican about the catastrophe of clerical sexual abuse, but those reports went unheeded. He has been working on behalf of the victims ever since. Tom Doyle has described the Catholic church in the United States as 'a swamp of toxic waste', and he accused the US bishops of running 'a self-serving public relations campaign by which they continue to try to flip the whole mess around, make themselves look like victims and demonize anyone who has ever challenged their collective stupidity, cruelty and total lack of compassion.'

  • Candidate Without a Prayer By Herb Silverman
    Guest Host: Alex Mescavage
    Host/Producer: Nell Cole
Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt
    By Herb Silverman
Humanist Press, the publishing house of the American Humanist Association, has released as its first ebook, Candidate Without a Prayer:An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt. This autobiography by atheist activist and college math professor Herb Silverman proves it takes a sense of humor for an atheist Jew living in South Carolina to run for governor simply because the state constitution said he couldn’t.
Silverman is a national public spokesperson for the rights of nonbelievers as president of the Secular Coalition for America and a board member of the American Humanist Association. Candidate Without a Prayer details his upbringing (raised by Orthodox Jews as a “liberal, Yankee, Jew atheist with four strikes against me”), studying to become a professor in mathematics (“Part of the beauty of mathematics is seeing the strange and mysterious places that apparently simple and innocuous assumptions may lead”), and his run for the governorship of South Carolina to challenge the state constitution that stated “No person shall be eligible for the office of governor who denies the existence of the Supreme Being.”
Sharon Fratepietro, who is Fred's wife,  was raised Catholic and became atheist later in life.  She is on the board of the Institue for Humanist Studies as well as many other important causes.
Humanist Press is the publishing house of the American Humanist Association, providing material for the humanist/freethought/atheist market since 1995. (www.americanhumanist.org)

  • Forgotten Australians We Speak Your History
Welcome to We speak your history series. This series was created to speak the true history of this world from the people who have lived it.  Speaking for the Forgotten Australians is Leigh Westin Ryan.
Forgotten Australians is a term applied to the more than 500,000 non-indigenous, child migrants and indigenous children who experienced care in institutions or outside a home . Children were shipped from Britain to Australia, mainly from poor backgrounds, often without the knowledge of their parents.
There was a history of neglect and cruelty by institutional staff and management.  Physical deprivation was common. Children were cold and hungry. Hard physical work was part of their daily lives. Particularly demeaning and very difficult tasks were given as punishments. Punishments for very small offences or perceived disobedience could be harsh and cruel – severe physical attacks and beatings are reported by many. Alternatively, children were locked in a cupboard or a cell in solitary confinement or made to stand for many hours in one position. The children suffered abandonment, loss of family, neglect, exploitation, brutality, sexual assault, poor health care, poor education and loss of Identity. Their names were replaced with numbers.
An Apology was issued on November 16, 2009 by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
