Greetings, avid adventurers and folklore fanatics! Tonight, join us in the shadowy realms of Fireside Folklore with Hades, a family-friendly podcast where ancient tales and modern wonders merge. Tonight we delve into a tale originating from China--that of Lo-Sun, the Blind Boy. As usual, my nephew Hermes will first provide us fun facts about China's giant pandas, the Great Wall, and its famous Terracotta Army.
As we watch Lo-Sun triumph over adversity with help from his canine companion, Bao Bao, we dedicate this episode to Louis Braille and others like him whose achievements have made it possible for individuals with disabilities to live rich and fulfilling lives, all the world over.
After my divine family finishes bringing this tale to life, join my enchanting wife Persephone in the kitchen to prepare sesame chicken, a sweet and tasty dish which just might bring you luck. Then participate in Zeus’s Lightning Round, where you will have the chance to win a prize worthy of the retail gods.
This podcast will be going on a temporary break from its usual programming as Hades helps his loyal ferryman by manning the boat so the fellow can go to the Elysium Spa to beautify himself for Nyx.
This episode is proudly sponsored by Medusa’s Mirthful Minions. Forget fearsome—our gargoyle guardians are crafted to bring joy and laughter, guarding your home not with terror, but with cheer.

Greetings, shades of the mortal realm! Hades here with scintillating show notes to illuminate our tale of self-sacrifice by New Zealand's beloved kiwi bird.
Join me on a verdant journey back to primordial forests, before humans stamped trails through virgin wilderness. Something sinister lurks amid the towering kauri and rimu trees, an insidious blight turning mighty giants into lifeless husks. Who will step forward to save this arboreal realm from ecological ruin? Not the honey-voiced tui, too timid to leave sun-kissed branches. The elegant pukeko scoffs at soil-sullied feet, refusing to abandon aerie perches. Busyness, excuses...I've heard them all in my Underworld domain.
Just when hope seems lost, the unlikeliest volunteer flaps forth - the tiny kiwi, stout and stripe-feathered. No flashy plumage or melodious calls, easily overlooked among avian brethren. But outward appearances deceive, for within that barrel-shaped body beats a heart of astonishing courage.
With muted earth-hued feathers donned as camouflage, the erstwhile high-flyer descends to shadowy forest floor on a noble quest to save arboreal kin. Giving up flight, sunshine's warmth, and rainbow brilliance, the nocturnal insect-eater patrols the leaf-strewn ground in solitude.
Generations flourish under the kiwi's humble guardianship. Children yet unborn will hear this legend and learn that true heroism often dwells quietly in the most unassuming souls.
What awaits should you join our crackling fireside gathering? A deliciously chilling ghost tale set in old Mexico next episode. But first, immerse yourself in the sonorous tones of New Zealand's twin national anthems, a harmonious nod to the Māori and European strands interwoven in Kiwi identity. Regale your ears with Hermes' lyrical ode extolling New Zealand's trailblazing suffragettes, brooding volcanic peaks, and mouthwatering hokey pokey treats.
Most crucially, witness the genesis of the peculiar bird now as ubiquitous as New Zealand's avian emblem. Marvel how sacrificed flight and lost luster transform the diminutive dove into an enduring, cherished symbol of selfless devotion to future generations.
This moving kiwi legend and more awaits within our tale-spinning circle, dear listeners! Journey through the candlelit tunnel toward my beckoning voice to discover profound truths hidden below brooding exteriors.

Till we meet again by the fireside, adieu! May your dreams swim in yogurt and mango, sweet as the bonds between lovers.
Here is that recipe for mango lassi.
Mango Lassi is a traditional South Asian drink that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, this drink is a blend of ripe mangoes, yogurt, and sometimes milk. The word 'Lassi' refers to any yogurt-based drink in Indian cuisine. Historically, Lassis were savored to cool down during the hot seasons and were often flavored with spices like cardamom and saffron.
The Mango Lassi, with its sweet and tangy flavor, is particularly beloved. Mangoes, known as the 'king of fruits' in India, have been cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years. This drink combines the nutritional benefits of mangoes—rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—with the probiotic qualities of yogurt, making it not only delicious but also healthy.
In Indian culture, Mango Lassi is more than just a refreshing beverage; it's a part of summer festivities and family gatherings. It's also popular in Indian restaurants worldwide, serving as a delightful finish to spicy meals.
Now, let's dive into how to make this delightful beverage:
Here is what you will need.
- 1½ cups of chopped sweet ripe mangoes (or 1 cup of canned mango pulp)
- 1 cup of plain yogurt
- ½ cup of milk, water, or 4 ice cubes
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon of cardamom powder (optional)
Optional Garnishes:
- 1 teaspoon of chopped nuts
- A pinch of saffron strands
- 4 tablespoons of whipped cream
Here's how to make this delightful drink.
1. If using fresh mangoes, rinse, chill, peel, and cube them. (Skip this step if using canned mango pulp.)
2. Add the mangoes, yogurt, milk (or water or ice), cardamom powder, and sugar to a blender jar.
3. Blend until the mango lassi is super smooth. It should be thick but pourable.
4. Taste test and adjust the sweetness or consistency by adding more sugar, milk, ice, or mangoes.
5. Pour the mango lassi into serving glasses. For a colder lassi, refrigerate for an hour before serving.
6. Garnish with sliced pistachios or saffron strands.

Here is the recipe for Sancocho.
Sancocho is a hearty soup that has meat, vegetables, corn, and herbs in a flavorful broth. It is usually served with rice, avocado, and a spicy sauce called ají picante. Sancocho is a great dish to enjoy on a cold day or when you are feeling sick. It is also a common dish for celebrations and festivals.
Here are the ingredients you will need:
6 skinless chicken thighs
2 green plantains
3 medium red potatoes
10 ounces of yuca (frozen or fresh)
3 ears of corn
1 cup of chopped cilantro
3 scallions
1 medium tomato, chopped
4 cloves of garlic
1 teaspoon of cumin
2 chicken bouillon cubes
8 cups of water
Salt and pepper to taste
To make the sancocho, follow these steps:
1. In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat and cook the scallions, tomato, garlic, and cumin for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
2. Add the chicken, cilantro, water, and bouillon cubes and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about an hour, skimming off any foam that forms on the surface.
3. Cut the plantains, potatoes, yuca, and corn into large pieces and add them to the pot. Cook for another 35 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
4. Season with salt and pepper to your liking and serve the sancocho in large bowls with rice, avocado, and ají picante on the side.
Remember to have a grown-up help with chopping and cooking!
