Greetings, listeners! The tale I've been wanting to tell, The Golden Pail, requires far more characters than we have deities for! This is primarily because a few of us, including myself, are at odds, and we're all too stubborn to move from our entrenched positions. However, if I am to rail against you mortals, or rather your elected and appointed officials, for their zeal for war, then it would behoove me to try and broker some ceasefire agreements amongst my Olympian family. After all, I despise hypocrisy!
This week, I approached Ares at his battle encampment and posed the idea that he extend an olive branch to Hephaestus. Though he was initially reluctant, my nephew pulled through and with Orpheus's help, he was able to sing his way to victory! It will be great to have Aphrodite, Ares, and Hephaestus on the same show at the same time.
The war god made it look so easy. Something tells me that Hera and I won't make peace by sitting around a campfire singing kumbaya.

Greetings, listeners! After the passage of the Divine Censorship Act by the U.S. Congress, (and overwhelmingly, I might add), I'll be ceding my podcast to my eldest sister, Hestia. Never fear, though! You'll still get to enjoy stories, recipes, fun facts, and games! Tonight, you'll hear an adaptation on L. Frank Baum's tale, now dubbed "The Box of Puppies". You'll also learn why winning is unfair, and the importance of straining every speck of pulp out of your orange juice. May your smiles be bright and your stories free from fuss and muss.
Should you wish to discuss this new show, pray to Hestia. She hasn't set up E-mail yet. And if you don't hear from her, please understand that it isn't you. It's simply a matter of divine self-preservation. Until we meet again, may your spirits remain as untroubled as our sanctioned stories. Farewell, and remember, within every careful word lies a world of unspoken truths.

Greetings, listeners! My apologies for the delay getting this particular episode to you. Managing the Underworld's affairs has been quite the handful these days, what with Persephone absent and the mortal world being quite wrought with turmoil of late. This week, our journey takes us to the country of Yemen. Though they are one of the poorest countries in the world as a result of a civil war that's lasted more than a decade, the Yemenis are a resilient people. We chose to spotlight them because of their continued embargo to prevent the further persecution of Palestinian civilians. This tale, "Cloud Camels", is a lighthearted jaunt into the clever ways of a Shaykh who outwitted a greedy sultan and saved his village from ruin.
Dionysus gave us a recipe for a Socotra Island punch, which sounds absolutely divine and just what I need right now to deal with my workload! As ever, Hermes found us some fun facts about Yemen, including the tidbit that their aforementioned Socotra Island is home to some plants and animals not found anywhere else. Don't forget to participate in this week's Lightning Round, if you'd care to buy some Yemeni coffee, or something else on Etsy.
Any feedback may be sent via dead letter to [email protected].
Next time, we will return for our third sojourn in Palestine, where we'll be hearing the story of "The Golden Pail". It's shaping up to be an epic tale, so it may take my Olympian family a bit of time and rehearsal, but I'll be sure to get the Erinyes to ensure our performance is nothing short of stellar. Until then, may your hearths be warm, and your spirits brighter. Hail to thee, and farewell.

Greetings listeners! Persephone here. After coming to the Upperworld, I've been observing the way you mortals behave, and I thought I'd take a leaf out of the playbook to defend my dear pomegranate prince, who's been taking a lot of heat lately! I know. Hearing the drama of the gods isn't your cup of tea ... but Hades adores myths and stories!

Greetings, listeners! This week, we have officially begun a new season of our podcast because Persephone is no longer with us! Yes folks, Dionysus is officially handling the recipe segment. Of course, that means I won't be getting my Mutabal for quite some time, but I suppose good things come to those who wait.
This week, we return to Palestine where we hear a story reminiscent of Diamonds and Toads from the Brothers Grimm, but listeners, I think this tale is a whole lot more exciting and original! This tale was adapted from Speak Bird, Speak Again by Ibrahim Muhawi.
Dionysus, in his debut, provides us a recipe for a Desert Date Delight, something which pays homage to the end of Ramadan. It can be enjoyed as a mocktail or a cocktail, depending upon your age and mood.
And, of course, we can't forget Zeus's Lightning Round. Once again, the prize will be a $25 gift card to Shop Palestine.
Next time, we'll be taking a trip to Yemen where we'll be hearing the tale of The Cloud Camels. If you have any feedback or wish to request a tale of your own, please send a dead letter to [email protected].

Greetings, listeners! This is a bittersweet episode for me because we are bidding farewell to Fireside Folklore with Hades as you know it. You see, we've encountered some fiscal challenges related to our Olympian problems, including ensuring you don't have to deal with the acoustics of the Underworld, a transition from dial-up, and the skyrocketing premiums on our errors and omissions insurance. However, not wanting to say goodbye to you completely, I've reluctantly agreed to host Divine Idol, a show in which the gods will sing their way to victory and pick up the support of sponsors along the way. Listen now as Chronos, Zeus, Aphrodite, and Ares battle to find out which of them will be good enough to be featured on the upcoming season of Divine Idol. Hopefully Ares isn't the one to make it because, listeners, the only sponsors willing to put down any coin on him are makers of divine weapons!
Now listeners, if you believed any of this, then I've properly done my job because, you see, this was our divine contribution to your April Fool's Day tomfoolery. True, we didn't quite manage to get it released on time, but such is the way of gods. We're not known for following the edicts of mortal timetables. Enjoy us making an utter fool out of ourselves, for it will be a rare thing, I assure you! Next time, we'll resume our regular programming with the Palestinian folklore I promised you when we concluded "The Sticks of Justice", "Silver and Scorpions". If you have any feedback about this episode, feel free to send a dead letter to [email protected].

Greetings, listeners! This episode was recorded before Persephone left for the Upperworld, so depending on where you are, it may be spring or perhaps your Southern hemisphere Hades is eagerly catching up with his tropical queen! This week, we're traveling to South Africa, a country which rose from the ashes of Apartheid to become an inspirational example of how a country can heal its rifts and begin a new chapter marked by equality and human rights.
Under Hermes's tutelage, we will learn that South Africa is one of Dionysus's stomping grounds, as well as what makes it such a beautiful tourist destination.
Our story tonight is one I call "The Sticks of Justice", about a man who cleverly caught a thief and helped a kingdom maintain its peace and prosperity. This story was adapted from Nelson Mandela's book, Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folk Tales.
Persephone provides us with a recipe for bobotie, a South African casserole which combines the sweet with the savory.
Of course, we have our Lightning Round with this week's prize being a $25 gift card to the Destiny African Market.
In a twist I never saw coming, Persephone sings me a heartfelt farewell song, and I return her gift in kind. Though, dear listeners, I must warn you that I'm not the god of music for a very good reason! I can only hope that this doesn't deter you from enjoying our stories.
If you have any commentary or would like to request a story, please send a dead letter to [email protected].

The coming of spring is bittersweet, for this is when Persephone must go back to the Upperworld. How will that change the podcast? Will Dionysus end up taking over the recipe segment? Will Persephone accept the offer of a temporal gate? Or will nothing change at all? Persephone must grapple with these questions in this episode which comes at the changing of the seasons.

Greetings, listeners! Here is the long-awaited first stop in Palestine. This week, we retell the story of Half of a Halfling, a story about a young hero who was born with one foot, one arm, one ear, and one eye. Despite his challenges, he goes on to prove to the naysayers that he is just as capable as everyone else. We also learn how to make falafel the Palestinian way, and we learn about the significance of the olive tree.
Don't forget to participate in the Lightning Round hosted by Zeus. This week, the prize is a gift certificate from an online marketplace selling Palestinian goods.
If you're interested in reading Palestinian folktales, you'll find a version of this, (from which our tale is adapted), and other fascinating stories come from the book, Speak Bird, Speak Again by Ibrahim Muhawi.
If you have any feedback, would like to request a story, or have any suggestions, please send me a dead letter at [email protected]. Until next time, may your story be filled with adventure and happiness.

Show Notes for "Fireside Folklore with Hades" Special Episode:
Greetings, mortals and immortals alike. Hades here, with an unexpected special episode to explain the delay in releasing our next tale.
As many of you know, I take great pride in crafting each episode with care and precision. However, even the lord of the underworld can fall victim to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, it was a visit from my father, Chronos, the embodiment of time itself.
In this episode, you'll hear:
- A confrontation with my brother Zeus about the delayed script
- An unexpected journey to Tartarus to speak with my father, Chronos
- A heated discussion about the power of manipulating time
- The true purpose behind Fireside Folklore and the power of stories to bridge divides
- An unexpected offer for Chronos to participate in a future episode featuring a Palestinian tale
This impromptu episode delves into the complexities of family dynamics, even among the gods, and the importance of using our platforms and voices to promote empathy, understanding, and the preservation of diverse cultural folklore.
While the delay was unintended, it provided a unique opportunity to reflect on the mission of this podcast and to potentially welcome a new voice to the mix.
Stay tuned for our regularly scheduled programming, featuring a captivating Palestinian tale, which may have a very special guest star. Until then, keep the fire burning and the stories flowing.
