When you think about what Jesus did on the Thursday before His crucifixion, it should absolutely stop you in your tracks. Here's Jesus, with less than 24 hours to live, and what does He do? He serves. He gives. He loves. Jesus takes the Passover meal, which the Jews had been celebrating for over a thousand years. Then He does something that would have been shocking to everyone in the room—He gets up from the table, takes off His outer garment, wraps a towel around His waist, and starts washing His disciples' feet. This wasn't just humble; this was the job of the lowest servant in the household. Yet Jesus, knowing He was about to endure the cross, spent some of His final moments performing this act of radical servanthood.
The question for us is painfully simple: If Jesus, knowing what was coming, could serve others in their lowest needs, what excuse do we have for thinking any service is beneath us? Who in your life needs you to "wash their feet" today? What act of humble service are you avoiding because you think it's beneath your dignity? On Maundy Thursday, Jesus demolishes all our excuses.
