First Orlando - Horizon West Podcast

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! Today's message takes from the teachings of Jesus and Paul to discuss what greatness looks like in the Kingdom of God. As we consider these teachings and God's call for us to pursue greatness, Pastor Chris gives us guidance on making choices for spiritual greatness and on following through on the commitments we make.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! In today's Bible passage, Moses is tending his father-in-law's sheep in the desert after running away in fear from Egypt. While in the desert, God grabs Moses' attention in a bush that was burning but not burning up. In the resulting conversation with Moses, God tells Moses he will lead Abraham's descendants from slavery in Egypt into a land that God promised. A key verse in this story is Exodus 33:15, where Moses pleads with God, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here."

Horizon West Church is approaching a similar challenge regarding a plan to build a permanent building on the property we bought last year. We, like Moses, need to commit ourselves to following God's leadership and listening for what God wants us to do. As the poet wrote in Psalm 127:1, "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."

Of much greater importance is how each of us respond when God tries to get our attention to call us to serve God. We, like Moses, need to recognize God's presence, trust in God's promise, and follow God's plan.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We are wrapping up our series on the story of Joseph, looking at the passage where Joseph reflects on his life and how God was always faithful and present in good and bad times. Joseph learned the truth that God's way is best, and we can learn the same from Joseph's experience. We can say these words with confidence: We don't know when, where, or how, but God is going to make a way where there seems to be no way.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We are continuing the story of Joseph, and the internal struggles Joseph experienced when he met with his brothers who had sold him into slavery. The "soap opera" of Joseph's life included frequent deceptions and half-truths, paralleling stories from the lives of his father and grandfather. God is at work, even with these questionable actions of Joseph and his brothers. Shiloh explains for us in this story three important truths: God's faithfulness is not contingent on our faithfulness. Life's trials are not an infringement upon God's call on our lives. Our blessings come from (a lot of things but mostly from) how clearly we see.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We are continuing the story of Joseph today, focusing this week on Genesis chapter 41. Last week, we saw how Joseph allowed God to use him, even when he was in jail, to provide answers to two fellow prisoners. This week, we see Joseph, still in jail and forgotten by the one he helped -- it's not fair! Still, Joseph was faithful to God as he waited two more years, and God was actively working good for Joseph even when he couldn't see it. Pastor Socrates gives us three habits to practice to strengthen our faithfulness, particularly in times of waiting: thanking God for every good thing, noticing when God transforms a setback into something good, and sharing with others how God is working in your life.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We are continuing the story of Joseph today, focusing on chapters 39 and 49 of the book of Genesis. Once again, Joseph found himself in unfair circumstances, this time in jail in Egypt. Once again, Joseph remained faithful and obedient to God, and God opened opportunities for Joseph to glorify God by helping his captors and fellow prisoners. As Pastor Korey teaches us, just because God is silent doesn't mean that God is absent, and we also should not be absent in following God's calling to serve others.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We've all been thirsty before, so we can imagine how thirsty Jesus felt, sitting by a well in Samaria in the middle of the day. When he asked a woman who had come to the well for a drink, she was surprised that Jesus would talk with her given her ethnicity and background, but Jesus doesn't let differences separate us from Him. He also gave her what she needed, the Living Water of a restored relationship with God. Jesus offers the same Living Water to us, too!

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! We are continuing our study of the life of Joseph from the book of Genesis. Last week's message discussed obstacles that Joseph had to overcome, and today's message discusses temptations that Joseph had to avoid. They ways that Joseph resisted these temptations give us three approaches that we can use to resist temptation. The first is to put our devotion to God first in our lives. The second is to put distance between ourselves and evil. The third is to run when evil closes in.

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! Today's message begins a series on the life of Joseph, recorded in the book of Genesis starting in chapter 37. Joseph was the eleventh of twelve sons born to Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, and his relationship with his older brothers was difficult. In the stories given in Genesis and in this sermon series, we see how God used the difficulties in Joseph's life served to increase his faith, and how his faith positively impacted his family and their descendants. As Pastor Chris encourages us in this message, "Life isn't fair, but God is faithful!"

Thank you for joining us for this week's message! Today's message is the third and final one in a series of messages on spiritual transformation. In this message, Pastor Chris teaches us that the two "producers" of spiritual formation are the human soul and the Holy Spirit. In the earlier messages, we saw how our heart and our character produce our actions. We add to this model four dimensions of influence on our heart: our bodies, social environments, thoughts, and feelings. Our souls are what binds our spiritual lives together, integrating the dimensions of our lives so we grow more like Christ. But our souls cannot produce this growth without the Holy Spirit in us. It is this union of our souls with the Spirit that continually produce new life in us.

For Horizon West Church, this spiritual formation in our members has allowed God to change lives in our community and to draw people into closer relationships with God and each other. As God continues to lead us, there are exciting times ahead of us, with the planned construction of a permanent church home. Watch for a Response Sunday in late October when we will commit to God's plan for this building project!
