The text of Galatians, where we find this list of fruits, begins with a list of the “acts of the sinful nature.” Each act prizing and prioritizing the self by serving the self in whatever ways the self might want to be served. The list of fruit in the life of the Spirit invites us to properly value and treat others. The metaphor Paul gives is that the old self must be crucified with Jesus. In other words, the old tree, with its root of pride and self-love must be plucked so that something new might grow. This journey begins with belonging to Christ (Galatians 5:24).
