An Afrikaans school in Vereeniging has won its case in the Pretoria High Court against the Gauteng education department. The University of South Africa has warned students against forcing their way onto campus. Earlier chaos broke out at the university's Sunny side campus when prospective students climbed over the fence in order to register before the January 19 deadline. Unisa has made a call to re-open its applications for undergraduate students who have not previously applied for admission to the 2018 academic year. Learner organisation, COSAS in Limpopo says the department of education and institutions of higher learning must find ways of improving infrastructure at the institutions to accommodate new students. COSAS also raised a concern over a stampede that left eight people injured at the Capricorn TVET college in Polokwane. Eight prospective students have been injured after a stampede and hit-and-run incidents at the Capricorn TVET College in Polokwane in Limpopo. Thousands of applicants formed long queues outside campus hoping to register for the 2018 academic year. Registration has now been suspended until Monday. North West police are monitoring the situation in Rustenburg, where several houses were torched overnight as community members attacked suspected drug dens and brothels. Scores of foreign nationals were chased out of town. The protesters also attacked suspected drug addicts in town. One police official allegedly caught dealing with drugs, was also arrested.
