  • Lake Chesdin Is Virginia’s Secret Big Bass Factory | 24 LB Bag Breakdown w/ Nick Passalacqua

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we sit down with Virginia angler Nick Passalacqua to break down one of Central Virginia’s most underrated bass fishing regions — the James River, Appomattox River, Chickahominy River, and Lake Chesdin.

Nick grew up minutes from the James and Appomattox, and in this conversation he gives us a true local’s perspective on how these fisheries set up, why the Appomattox fishes differently from the James, where tidal influence matters, and why Lake Chesdin may be one of the most overlooked big-bass lakes in Virginia.

We also dive into Nick’s recent 24-pound tournament bag on Lake Chesdin, how he targets both shallow grass fish and offshore fish, why the hotter the weather gets the better the bite can be, and what makes Chesdin such a sneaky big-fish factory. Nick also breaks down his Quaky-style bait setup, treble-hook rigging, grass fishing approach, crankbait/Carolina rig bite, and how gizzard shad and bluegill influence the fishery.

Later in the episode, we talk about the current state of the James and Chickahominy, how the hard winter may have impacted grass, why some areas are fishing tougher than normal, and the growing forward-facing sonar debate in local Virginia tournament trails.

    Topics covered include:

    • Lake Chesdin bass fishing breakdown
     • Nick’s 24-pound tournament bag
     • James River vs. Appomattox River vs. Chickahominy River
     • How tide affects the Appomattox River
     • Grass fishing and offshore fishing on Chesdin
     • Quaky bait setup, hooks, rod, reel, and line
     • Why Chesdin produces giant bags
     • The state of the James River and Chickahominy in 2026
     • Forward-facing sonar bans in Virginia tournament trails
     • Local Tuesday and Thursday night tournament series
     • Nick’s future tournament goals, BFL plans, and fishing journey

  • Keith Poche’s Potomac River Winning Secrets: Shallow Water, Tidal Bass & Tiny Boat Tactics

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we sit down with professional bass angler Keith Poche to break down his Potomac River Toyota Series win and the shallow-water strategy that helped him beat the field.

Keith explains how he used his custom Gator Trax aluminum boat to access hard-to-reach tidal creeks, beaver dams, grass flats, pad fields, and backwater areas most bass boats cannot reach. We talk through his tournament decisions, including his day-one Neabsco Creek pattern, surprise big bites near a sewer outflow, his day-two run toward Washington, D.C., and the final-day creek that helped him close out the win.

This episode is packed with Potomac River bass fishing strategy, tidal bass fishing tips, frog fishing, shallow-water tournament tactics, fish management, high-tide feeding windows, and Keith’s approach to staying confident in his own style instead of following the crowd.

Keith also compares the Potomac River to the James River, talks Gator Trax boats, and explains why simple baits like a frog, shaky head, Pit Boss, and Berkley General still catch big bass in 2026.

If you enjoy bass fishing podcasts, Potomac River fishing reports, MLF fishing, Toyota Series tournament breakdowns, tidal river bass fishing, shallow-water fishing, or professional bass fishing interviews, make sure to like, subscribe, and follow Fishing the DMV for more Mid-Atlantic fishing coverage.

  • Ocean City & Eastern Shore Fishing Breakdown: Summer Fishing Report with Always Bent Fishing

On this exciting episode of Fishing the DMV, we are joined by Taylor from Always Bent Fishing for a full Ocean City, Maryland summer fishing report!

The spring run in Ocean City was one of the best in recent memory, with big striped bass showing up heavy in the surf, around the Route 50 Bridge, in the bay, and along the beach for anglers soaking bait. Now that water temperatures are climbing, the bite has officially shifted into summer mode, and Taylor breaks down everything anglers need to know before heading to the coast.

We talk about the current flounder bite in the bay, around the inlet, near the Route 50 Bridge, and on nearshore wrecks, plus the arrival of bluefish, red drum, sheepshead, cobia, and other summer species. Taylor also explains why water temperature is one of the biggest factors he watches when predicting the transition from the spring striped bass run into the summer bite.

In this episode, we also cover the best places for visiting anglers to fish from shore, including the Ocean City Inlet, North Jetty, Oceanic Fishing Pier, Third Street Pier, and Route 50 Bridge. Taylor gives practical tips on baits, tackle, tides, structure, and how freshwater anglers can get started fishing saltwater without feeling overwhelmed.

We also dive into the tougher-than-usual back bay fishing, the better action closer to the inlet, the speckled trout situation on the Chesapeake side, the early arrival of sheepshead and cobia, and the funky start to the offshore tuna and marlin season. Taylor shares his thoughts on how Gulf Stream movement, water temperature, and changing patterns may be affecting Ocean City’s inshore and offshore fishing.

Plus, we preview the Fish and Paddle Saltwater Slam kayak tournament, the growing Ocean City kayak fishing scene, and the buildup to the White Marlin Open, one of the biggest offshore fishing events in the world and one of the busiest weeks of the year in Ocean City.

Whether you fish from the surf, bridge, pier, kayak, bay boat, or offshore boat, this episode is packed with Ocean City fishing information to help you catch more fish this summer.

If you are planning a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, this is the episode you need to hear before you go!

  • Summer Crappie Fishing Blueprint!!! with Joshua Powell Morris

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we are joined by Joshua Powell Morris of Richmond Crappie Guide Service and the Richmond Crappie Club for a deep dive into summertime crappie fishing in Virginia. Josh breaks down how crappie behavior changes after the spawn, why summer fish become more predictable around brush piles, bridge pilings, docks, current breaks, and shade lines, and how anglers can build a productive rotation of spots when the bite gets tough.

We also get into Josh’s tournament season, including his success on the Bobcats trail, traveling to Missouri for a massive crappie tournament, and what those experiences revealed about how strong Virginia’s crappie fisheries really are. Josh compares fisheries like Buggs Island/Kerr, Lake Anna, Chickahominy River, James River, Rappahannock River, Occoquan Reservoir, and High Rock, while explaining why some rivers are boom-or-bust and others consistently produce numbers.

If you are trying to catch more crappie this summer, this episode is loaded with practical information: when to use minnows versus artificial baits, why pressured fish often respond better to live bait, how long to give a brush pile before moving, why you should change presentation after a fish follows but does not commit, and how bank anglers can target crappie around bridges, shade, docks, and deeper summer cover.

Josh also shares his favorite summer crappie baits, including minnows, Bobby Garland Baby Shad in Monkey Milk, curly tails, paddle tails, and smaller post-spawn presentations. We finish with a breakdown of the best seasons to book a crappie guide trip depending on your goals—whether you want bigger fish, easier-to-find fish, numbers, or a chance to learn techniques you can repeat on your own.

Book a trip with Josh through Richmond Crappie Guide Service on Facebook or call 804-968-8963. Also make sure to check out the Richmond Crappie Club if you want to learn more about crappie fishing or get involved in the competitive crappie scene in Virginia.

  • The Bassmaster Economy Is Breaking… Here’s What Nobody Talks About | with Flint Financial Planning

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, I sit down with Kevin Flint of Flint Financial Planning for one of the most important conversations we’ve had about the future of fishing, tournament angling, and the real cost of chasing this sport.

Kevin grew up fishing Smith Mountain Lake with his dad out of an old Ranger bass boat, and today he brings a unique perspective as both a lifelong angler and a Certified Financial Planner. We talk about how Smith Mountain Lake has changed over the years, the impact of blueback herring on the fishery, the recent low-water conditions, and how the lake’s economy has evolved since COVID.

Then we take a deep dive into the financial side of bass fishing. Why are boats, trucks, gas, tackle, hotels, and entry fees getting so expensive? Are tournament payouts keeping up with inflation? Is forward-facing sonar really the reason tournament participation is down, or is the real issue the rising cost of everything around the sport?

Kevin breaks down the economics behind the fishing industry, why $100,000 in tournament winnings does not go as far as it used to, and what young anglers need to understand before taking on debt to chase the dream. We also discuss LLCs, Schedule C income, taxes on tournament winnings, guide businesses, budgeting, credit card debt, buy-now-pay-later programs, umbrella insurance, and how anglers at every stage of life can make smarter financial decisions.

Whether you’re a high school angler, college fisherman, weekend tournament guy, full-time guide, retiring angler, or someone dreaming about buying a new boat, this episode is packed with information that could save you a lot of money and stress.

Please note: this conversation is for general educational purposes only and should not be considered personal financial, legal, or tax advice. Always consult a qualified professional for your specific situation.

  • Juniata River Smallmouth Fishing Report: 94.50” Kayak Tournament Win with Jordan Lovejoy

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we head back to Pennsylvania to break down the Juniata River smallmouth bass bite with Jordan Lovejoy, winner of the Kayak Adventure Series Juniata River event with an impressive 94.50 inches. Jordan shares how he unlocked a powerful post-spawn smallmouth bass pattern, why the Juniata River is one of the most underrated smallmouth rivers in the country, and how kayak anglers can find overlooked fish in current, shoals, isolated rock, and mid-river structure.

We dive deep into Juniata River fishing, Susquehanna River smallmouth behavior, kayak bass fishing strategy, and the key differences between fishing the Juniata River, Upper Potomac River, New River, Shenandoah River, Holston River, and Susquehanna River. Jordan explains how he targeted post-spawn smallmouth with a chatterbait, why subtle bait action mattered, how fish were positioning around rock and current seams, and why many anglers overlook the best water by focusing only on the bank.

This episode is loaded with river smallmouth fishing knowledge, including how to fish current, how to locate big smallmouth bass after the spawn, how to break down shallow rocky rivers, how to approach kayak fishing tournaments, and why the Juniata River Valley deserves more attention on the national bass fishing stage. Jordan also talks about the growth of kayak tournament fishing, the Kayak Adventure Series, college kayak fishing, forward-facing sonar, river fishing safety, kayak motors, and why smallmouth rivers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and the Mid-Atlantic are some of the best fisheries in the country.

  • Blue Ridge Musky | Paper Mill Pollution on the Jackson River? What’s Happening to the Upper James River

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we sit down with Capt. Sam Scott of Blue Ridge Muskies to discuss a serious and growing concern on the Jackson River and Upper James River: pollution concerns connected to the Smurfit Westrock paper mill in Covington, Virginia.

Sam breaks down what he has seen firsthand on his home waters, including dramatic water discoloration, sludge-like buildup on the river bottom, major dark-water events, poor fishing conditions after discharge events, and concerns over dissolved oxygen, water temperature, aquatic vegetation, spawning success, and the long-term health of the James River muskie and smallmouth bass fisheries.

We also discuss why this issue matters beyond fishing. The Jackson River feeds the Upper James, one of Virginia’s most important recreational river systems for anglers, guides, kayakers, tubers, and outdoor tourism. Sam explains why he believes more transparency, public awareness, and expanded water testing are urgently needed — including testing for more than just dissolved oxygen.

This conversation also touches on a national report that identified the Covington Smurfit Westrock facility as one of the most concerning paper mills in the country for pollution, emissions, odor complaints, and its impact on the Jackson River.

This is an important developing story for anyone who cares about Virginia rivers, the Upper James fishery, muskie fishing, smallmouth bass, clean water, and the future of outdoor recreation in the Mid-Atlantic.

  • Potomac River Bass Fishing Report: Summer Bass Secrets with Captain Steve Chaconas

In this episode of Fishing the DMV, we head back to the legendary Potomac River with one of the most knowledgeable anglers to ever fish it Captain Steve Chaconas.

Captain Steve breaks down the current state of the Potomac River bass fishery, including how the river is really fishing, why submerged aquatic vegetation like milfoil and SAV is so important, and how the loss of grass has changed the way anglers need to approach the river. We also discuss fishing pressure, tournament pressure, changing fish behavior, and why the Potomac may not be “dead” — but it is absolutely different.

Steve also gives an incredible breakdown of how to catch Potomac River bass right now, including his favorite summer techniques: chatterbaits, swim jigs, frogs, punching mats, Texas-rigged Senkos, spinnerbaits, docks, pads, hard cover, and old-school Carolina rigs. He also shares one of his secret topwater baits — the Hub’s Chub — and explains why it can trigger pressured bass and snakeheads when other baits won’t.

We also dive into underrated northern Potomac and DC-area bass fishing spots, including Piscataway, Dike Marsh, Spoils, Broad Creek, Belle Haven, Jones Point, Four Mile Run, Washington Channel, Pentagon Lagoon, Roosevelt Island, and the Anacostia.

If you fish the Potomac River, Northern Virginia, Maryland tidal bass fisheries, or want to better understand summer bass fishing around grass, docks, pads, tides, and hard cover, this is a must-listen episode.
