The topic sparked many questions as devotees deeply considered the difference between and implications of fitting-in and belonging, sharing their doubts about their own approach to their tradition: “How does a person who was born into a spiritual movement know that what they are experiencing is a feeling of belonging and not just a familiarity, just going along because that is all they have ever known—following a religious tradition rather than choosing a spiritual life.

“The relief of sadhu sanga does not come from feeling we have hidden ourselves very well from them. The relief from sadhu sanga comes from knowing that they know how much of a mess we are and they continue to love us, not only in spite of that messiness, but because of that.”
