  • Flags of the World Wide Web w/ Zachary Harden
W-w-what's up, VexHeads?! This week, I had the honor of sitting down with lifelong VexHead Zachary Harden. Zach is the Vice Director of a site I'm sure we're all familiar with, Flags of the World, and also helps edit the flag sections on some website called... checks notes Wikipedia? We'll dive into how Zach got started as a volunteer, chat about some of the wacky Wiki wars in editing, and get some tips on ways we can contribute to this endless group project as well! Plus, some quirks about the Arkansas flag that fly in the face of reason.

  • For Ham the Belling Tolls w/ Bradley Lockhart
It's back-to-back designers, y'all! We take a trip to the Pacific Northwest this week as I sit down with Bradley Lockhart of Bellingham Flag fame. Brad walks us through the process of getting the flag adopted in his town, and gives us tips on how we can do the same in ours. He's also got an "Officially Disqualified" flag for Seattle that's a whale of a good time, a killer Washington State redesign, and a different opinion on Alaska than our last guest...

As always, check out the SHOW NOTES, but especially this week to see his exclusive NAVA presentation!!!

  • Forest Finns Find Flag to Fly w/ Frédéric Lindboe
Hva skjer, VexHeads?! If you're really going to talk about Fresh Flags, there's no flag fresher than one that was unveiled just a week ago today, the brand new flag of the Forest Finns. And who better to talk about it with than its creator and general flag-man-about-town Frédéric Lindboe! We chat briefly about that unique Norwegian flag code and how to keep the peace with your neighbors, then we get straight into the timeline of the fresh new flag from start to Finnish. Along the way, Frédéric gives us some exclusive looks behind the design process, which started with a rough sketch on a phone???

Frédéric will be back, but in the meantime enjoy the show notes in chronological order here.

Here is the Reddit post he mentioned, which got a lot of love

  • "The Whole Show is About Flags"
Welp, we did it, VexHeads. This silly little flag show of ours is turning 1! It's been a hell of a year and honestly, we're just getting started. There are great things running up the Year 2 flagpole, but we'll get there when we get there. For this week, I sat down with Superguests Michael Green, Nick Page, and Tara Stark to do a good roundtable discussion on some flags I've neglected to talk about. Buuuuut things get derailed almost immediately by someone crashing our recording feed, so we try to roll with it.

Audio listeners (that's... everyone reading this)! Even if you never watch an episode, I'd love you to subscribe to the YouTube channel, and I'll even make it easy for you: this whole sentence is a link! And please rate & review anywhere you can. Thanks, VexHeads 🔥🎙️

This one was an absolute blast to record and thank you/I love you to everyone involved in this weird passion project of mine.

  • California Schemin' w/ Brian Stokle
Hang ten, VexHeads! Andy sits down this week with the creator of San Francisco's "Fog & Gold" Flag, Brian Stokle! Brian guides us through a little bit of SF's flag history, explains a little bit of his own history with flag designing (including why it's pretty easy to pick colors for the City by the Bay), and shows off his hope for a brighter future, rising from the ashes of the current flag. Plus, we dig into his 2022 City Flags Tournament on Twitter, and dig down into what makes the California flag such an enigma when it comes to design rules and tastes. Check out the show notes for all Brian's pics (+ the unedited transcript for this episode), and the links below to interract with Brian and the F&G Flag!

  • La Vex' Est Belle w/ Nasha Gagnebin
Quoi de neuf, VexHeads ? Cette semaine, Andy sits down with Deputy Secretary General of the Société française de vexillologie (SFV), Nasha Gagnebin. We go over a TON of stuff, from Nasha's booklet "Why Give Your City a Flag?" to the Vexi-Cup tournaments he's led, to the eccentricities of the Swiss. Broad gamut here. As always, CHECK OUT THE SHOW NOTES and the links below to get the full Flagged for Content Experience.

  • Czexillology w/ Kryštof Huk
What's up, CzexHeads?! This week, Andy sits down with Flag Czexpert and Czechretary of the Czech Vexillological Society (CVS), Kryštof Huk! He takes us through what it takes to get a flag adopted in Czechia, what role he plays in that, and how heraldry and vexillology are inextricably tied together there. Kryštof has designed over 40 of those adopted flags, and he gives us a few pointers not just on design, but on dealing with the bureaucracy you're gonna find almost anywhere. DO NOT miss the show notes, it's mandatory homework this week!

Here they are again, just in case!

(sorry for all the puns: I only promised not to do them on air, so they had to go somewhere, idk what you were Czexpecting)

  • Vexi-Cryptids 2 w/ Kevin Hayman
I'm back in this goofy horse's saddle again this week with returning guest Kevin Hayman of the Supernatural Selection podcast! As is our tradition, we break down some of the absolute zaniest creatures to ever grace a flag, while trying not to break down ourselves in the process. Kevin names all these weirdos, gets a new favorite flag, and there's an allegory about digital photography somewhere in there. All that, plus GWARlagher make their debut.

  • Primo Fimo w/ James Shore
Andy has special guest James Shore on this week, all the way from South Yorkshire, to talk about his passion for creating flags. Not in the traditional way, of course. James makes these beauties out of Fimo polymer clay and has worked his way through all the countries and UK counties before finally moving on to our US states. We talk about the joy and the challenges of his passion for making these (along with the occasional "oopsie") before we wrap up with a quiz on Bhutan.

  • Montréal or Nothing w/ Mike Carrozza
O Canada! You shouldn't have! But we do appreciate the gift that is comedian Mike Carrozza guesting this week. We get into Canada's flag for sure, but we also get a real life look at what it's like living in Montréal, Québec, and their attitudes toward both their local flag and the federal one. Turns out Québécois folks have some pretty strong feelings on both, and Mike gives us a tour through that minefield to help us get the big picture.
