  • EP. 42: Mr. Flagged for Content w/ Charles Ashburner
Beth sydd i fyny, VexHeads? I had the immense hono(u)r this week of hosting Mr Flag himself, Charles Ashburner, FFI! We have a chin wag about everything from Charles' time as the CEO of the UK's Flag Institute to his founding of Mr Flag, the UK’s top ranked flag brand. Obviously, we get to talking about a rivalry between two Welsh cities while we're at it, as well as the intricacies of sewing little red dragons on flags.

  • Ep. 40: Some Flags Make Better Rags w/ A Kiwi, Two Brits & a Yank
Hey VexHead Family! Join me this week as we haul out the bigger table that seats 5, as this week's episode is a crossover with A Kiwi, Two Brits & a Yank ( @flagsession , @Flagsin50 , past guest Joe Billips). We have a good chat about some not-so-savory flags from history that should probably stay there, and go over the various reasons they keep rearing their ugly heads. Maybe don't watch this one at work! Up to you!

  • Ep. 39: Sci-Fi Flying High w/ David Davis
Get ready for a jump into hyperspace this week as I invite David Davis to the virtual studio to chat about some high-flyin', sci-fi-in' space flags! We blast off into David's comic "Cosmic Dash" and get a glimpse into what it's like making flags for different factions in a galaxy far, far... abroad. Plus, we dig into some of our favorite fictional fandom flags from Gundam to Star Trek to Futurama. (Is this how algorithms work?)

  • A Can of Whoop-Up w/ Raquel Maestre
Hola from the Great North, VexHeads! This week I sit down with Raquel Maestre, a Spanish comic based in Montréal, because ¿por qué no, eh? We trek all across Canada to bring you some of the most... let's say "interesting" flags, from Calgary to Fort Whoop-Up (yes, you read that right). We've got a fast-food-looking flag, an American QR code of a flag, and a dormouse that never says die. What else did you expect?

  • The Right to Bear Arms w/ Scott Thomson
Bear arms, lion arms, stag arms... We've got 'em all in this one, folks! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Scottish heraldry specialist and vexillology enthusiast Scott Thomson (@saoradair) to chat about the interplay between the two, and what makes Scottish heraldry specifically so unique. Scott tells me all about the Lion King... er... Lord Lyon and his Court, the official process for registering arms, and some common misconceptions (especially here in the U.S.) about heraldry writ large. And of course, the new flag of Aberdeenshire!

  • North Starry-Eyed w/ Lee Herold
The stars align this week as I get the honor of sitting down with Vex-World luminary Lee Herold, who co-designed the North Star Flag for Minnesota back in '89! We chat about a few other flags with stars to their north, and Lee walks us through what's changed—and what hasn't—since he launched his stellar career in the flag business.

  • You Never Forget Your First Light w/ Eric Hart
Syracuse is the latest US city to get a flag makeover, and we know *just* the guy to talk to about it! I sat down with its designer Eric Hart to get the rundown of the First Light Flag in his own words. We chat about the history of Syracuse itself, how they handled their redesign, go over some copyright questions, and talk more than a little about Japan, Eric's home away from home.

***Apologies for my audio, I did my best to save what I could, but I know it sounds tinny. New equipment jitters.

Eric can be found at erichartdesign.com or at @yeahitssimple on Instagram

First Light Flag things are at @firstlightflag_syr on IG, at firstlightflag.com, and available via Eric himself HERE.

  • The Dawn of a New Bandera w/ Juan Artero
¿Qué pasa, VexHeads? This semana, it was my pleasure to sentarme with list-maker and superfan of the show Juan Artero! You may conocer Juan as Gortius Octavo/VIII on social media, where he compiles playlists, reading lists, and every other kind of list for this little bandera hobby of ours. We get into the flag of his native Canary Islands, a couple flags he's tried to change on the mainland, and wax philosophical about flags hanging from Spanish balconies.

Join us both on Discord to continue the conversation!

    Show Notes! (sorry they're unorganized)

(edit: "Las Palmas" should be "Gran Canaria" when talking about that flag)
