And we’re back with another halfisode on a Best Original Song from the 1980s, and boy O’ boy named Mike, this is some 80’s brilliance on full display. It’s the 1983/84 Song category featuring three movies, Flashdance, Tender Mercies, and Yentl that we both want to watch and re-watch in the coming months after this review.
Iconic performances from Jennifer Beales and Barbara Streisand, an Oscar winning performance from Robert Duvall, these films and all the youtube watching black holes involved are chuck full of serious acting, terrific songs, and great 1980-ness. Of course, we review these songs one by one, how they were used in the movies, how some were performed at the Oscars and on TV like The Johnny Carson Show.
Again, we’re much more complimentary of these songs and performances than our typical heckling selves. Though we also pick our spots to troll like the bridge guardians we can be. We finish with another re-rank called Perfecting Perfection, and you’ll be surprised to see how different our lists are in this episode.
Check out our other Best Original Song Oscar halfisodes. We’ve reviewed Celine Dion’s little ditty in Titanic, Let It Go from Frozen, Dirty Dancing’s anthem, Nat King Cole vs Cinderella, Whitney Houston vs Aladdin & Stevie Wonder vs Ghostbusters vs Footloose. Stay tuned for another halfisode from 1964/65 where Mary Poppins won over Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams. These episodes are fast and fun, and we have a blast recording them.
