For episode 86 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Jon sits down with Ken from KNS Brakes for a deep conversation about, you guessed it, brakes.

In the Subaru world, whether you have a WRX, STI, or a BRZ, there are a lot of options when it comes to brakes. And if you have a WRX, one of the first upgrades that people tend to look at is moving up to the STI Brembo Brakes. To do this properly, you need some special parts in the rear, and KNS has the best options for many of these swaps.

Not only that, but Ken, and KNS in general has a ton of experience with a variety of brake pads and rotors for many different applications.

Since brakes were the topic of conversation for this episode, we start talking about pads and rotors and the different options that you have there. Once we covered those, we then move on to talking about when you would need to look at a Big Brake Kit, and the things that you need to consider there to make sure you get something that will work best for you.

For Episode 85 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Ryan, Tasso, Scotty, and Jon have a conversation about Motorsports.

Dussex, Tasso, and Scotty all get out to compete their cars as much as they can. And I think that it is fair to say that they are all doing their best as privateer/grass-roots racers to compete in whatever class that they run in.

And it isn't easy most of the time.

The last episode of the Podcast we recorded was with Tim Hardy who has basically completely rebuilt his E30 BMW to compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and he has found a way to get his car on the podium, and is even in the top 27 fastest racers ever to run up Pikes Peak.

So with that in mind, and the knowledge of what all of the guys have gone through to try to compete, should Motorsports be more accessible?

For episode 84 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Scotty and Jon sit down with Tim Hardy.  

For most every year that we have raced up Pikes Peak, Tim Hardy has also been there as well running his black E30 BMW.  The point where we knew Tim was serious was when he showed up with a ton of new carbon fiber panels on his car, and we ended up finding out that he made them all himself.  Every year, he has something new or different on his car it seems, and then for 2022, he decided to rework and change his engine and drivetrain.  

Tim's car has always been impressive, and he is actually in a very small group of people to run up Pikes Peak who have put in a time under 10 minutes.  

After seeing the car this year, and getting an idea of all that he did and went through to get it up Pikes Peak, we had to sit down with him to find out all that we could.  Tim is an example of where innovation and ingenuity can turn into pace at the track to say the least.

For Episode 83 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Ryan and Jon sit down with Trey Tyler to talk about SCCA Rocky Mountain Time Trials.  

Trey has been a fixture in the Rocky Mountain SCCA Time Trials group, and he has quickly established himself as one of the front running cars with just under two years of competing.  

To get that fast that quickly is somewhat unusual so we wanted try to find out what some of Trey's secrets were so that we could pass them on.  

And somewhat spoilers here, but Assetto Corse may come up in this discussion.

For Episode 82 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Ryan and Jon sit down with Bailey Ipock to talk about Super Lap Battle, his WRX Wagon Race Car, and why he switched to an Evo.

Super Lap Battle 2021 didn't go to plan for us, and it turns out that we had some company there. We had a couple of great conversations with Bailey Ipock at the event, and after seeing what he went through at Super Lap this year, and knowing his history with the event, we had to get him on the Podcast.

Bailey has been at Super Lap Battle pretty much since the beginning, starting off in his WRX Wagon Time Attack car. He has had his share of both issues and successes with his WRX, and this year he moved to a new platform, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8.

And with that move, he also had a mix of success and difficulties.

We talk all about it in this episode, and through all of the lessons that Bailey has learned in the process.

As we sat down to record this, Tasso and Ryan had just both driven in the Lemons race at High Plains Raceway a few days before. They were in different cars and on different teams, so there was a lot to discuss. But we were also in the middle of testing on Pikes Peak for the 100th running of the Hill Climb.

To start the conversation, we talk about how unique the challenge of running up Pikes Peak is, and about how testing is going for us so far in 2022.

Dussex and Tasso then have a very detailed discussion about endurance racing, and their Lemons experience.

For episode 80 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Scotty, Dussex, and Jon talk with Amir from RS Future.  

Amir has been running his 1991 NSX in Time Attack for a few years now, and he has now refined his car to the point where he is now dominating the Street class in Global Time Attack.  This year he took first in Street class at Super Lap Battle at Circuit of the Americas while setting a new class record as well.  

After all the success that Amir has had in Street class, he is now set on going through his NSX to build it for a higher class, and is working on finding ways to make his car even faster than it already is.  

And although Amir has been driving for a long time, he has branched out into doing a lot of driver instruction and data analysis for the drivers that he coaches as well.  

We talk with Amir about all of the driving that he is doing, as well as everything going on at RS Future where they specialize in building race cars and fabricating motorsports carbon fiber parts.

For episode 79 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Scotty, Dussex, and Jon sit down with Tony from Turn in Concepts to talk about building a Subaru racecar.

Most of the time when you are driving on a day to day basis, you aren’t spending much time at wide-open throttle, getting into threshold or ABS braking, or stressing the cars cooling system up to or beyond its limit.  Driving at the track and especially in competition stresses every system of a car significantly more than any type of driving that is done on the street.  So it should not be a surprise that taking a car that was designed for the street and competing with it on track will require some work to keep it reliable and running properly.

When it comes to turning a Subaru into a racecar, there are some systems that don’t need much attention, but there are some that really need a mechanic or shop with experience to set them up properly.  And the better that this is done, the more reliable the car will be, but Subaru’s tent to take a little more finesse in this department than some other cars.

Turn in Concepts is one of the premier shops in the US that is building and maintaining Subaru’s that compete, and we had the opportunity to chat with Tony Barber who co-founded Turn in Concepts about their process of building a Subaru into a racecar, where it makes sense, and where it might not, and how they support and develop their cars and drivers as well.

For Episode 77 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Ryan and Jon sit down with Devin from Professional Awesome to talk about how running GLTC at Super Lap Battle went, and the lessons learned.  

If you have listened to any of our episodes talking about the issues that we had a Super Lap Battle, you know that the event didn't go smoothly for us, and there were a number of other competitors that were in the same boat. 

Devin had arguably a worse event than we did in fact.  But in the end, he was able to get his car running well enough to get in a few sessions and to run in the final GLTC race.  So it wasn't all bad, but it was a hard weekend to say the least.  

We talked with Devin a bit at the race, and now that some time has passed, we had a chance to talk about what went wrong, but what he learned so that hopefully the next event would be a heck of a lot better.
