Many people confuse the FLDS Church with the LDS Church (or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). They will often call both sects “Mormons,” which simply is not an accurate word for both sects. The confusion stems from the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ. In the early 1900s, some members of the LDS Church were excommunicated for their practice of polygamy, which they were told to abandon.   

Of the FLDS Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said, "the polygamists and polygamist organizations in parts of the western United States and Canada have no affiliation whatsoever with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
