We start with Germany’s stunning World Cup loss to Paraguay and discover that, as usual, international soccer has a remarkable ability to make millions of perfectly rational adults behave like deranged squirrels. From there, we ponder: why so many Europeans become unexpectedly fascinated by American food and conveniences, leading us through brisket, Waffle House, Texas Roadhouse, Chick-fil-A, and Buc-ee’s, which somehow manages to be a gas station, a tourist attraction, and possibly its own form of local government.

We talk air conditioning—not just as a machine that keeps people from melting into the upholstery, but as a cultural dividing line. We argue over comfort, whether humans are supposed to reshape nature or merely negotiate with it, and what it really means to "take dominion" over the world using a thermostat.

We also tackle the less relaxing subjects of exit taxes, estate taxes, and the fact that governments are enthusiastic about knowing where your money is. Along the way, we examine sovereign citizen claims, why those arguments consistently fail in court, and whether anyone can truly live outside government authority. By the end, we've connected soccer heartbreak, roadside brisket, industrial-strength air conditioning, and tax law into one conversation, which is either impressive or a compelling argument that podcasts are a waste of time.

On this 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, David examines what it says about the purpose of civil government and why it is instituted in light of the Apostle Paul’s warning not to be "spoiled" by philosophies of men that are not "after Christ. Is what the Declaration says about civil government more in accord with John Locke's 17th century philosophy or the theology of Abraham Kuyper? And if the former, what should future generations aspire to?
