JOCELYN: We’re going to answer a question today from Liz Latham and Liz says:

"Where can I find the best affiliate programs for e-books and digital products in general?"

SHANE: An affiliate product is what you sell for someone else. For example, if I have a friend and I sell one of his playbooks then I get 40%, so if he’s selling it for 100 bucks that would be $40. That’s an affiliate product – something that you can sell to other people and you get part of the money. That way you don’t have to create the content.

If you want to offer a new product for your audience and you don’t have time to make it, then you can just go out, find someone online who’s already selling that and you get a commission off what they’re doing.

There’s a lot of marketplaces where people have affiliate products set up. You can go to CommissionJunction.com or ClickBank.com and you’ll find dozens and dozens of products in your niche where people will say “see my e-book I have on my website” and if you sell it on your website I’ll give you 20-25%.

You can go there, sign up and browse through all of their offerings and you can randomly find products that complement your own products and you can expand your offering to your audience and if you’re willing to sell other books and physical products. Amazon.com has a really good affiliate program where you can sell anything on Amazon and get up to 6-7% for every sale so if you’re really looking toad a few things to flesh out your offerings then Amazon is a great place to get started quickly. Marketplaces are good and we use them but not for all our affiliate products.

JOCELYN: There are also a lot of other affiliate programs out there. I know that some states are not allowed to do Amazon affiliates for some reason and if that’s the case in your state then you can go to other companies you buy products from. There are tons of them out there for books, products and just about anything. If there’s a website you like to buy things from, chances are they’ll have an affiliate program or you could ask them if they have one and see if there’s a possibility for you.

How we find affiliates is that we go to live events and meet people who have things sometimes similar and not very similar to us in online business. Some of the people we have met recently and we promote their products. For one, Jessica and Cliff. You can find them on TheSellingFamily.com, and we’ll put a link to their site in our show notes.

They do Amazon where they actually sell physical products on Amazon. So they do things that are different to us, but we like that since we can recommend them to people who want to get started in online business, but maybe digital product creation like what we do is...

JOCELYN: Thanks for joining us. Today’s question is from Bill Clancy and Bill says:

“You recommend using Wordpress to start a website – Do you mean Wordpress.org or Wordpress.com or does it matter? These appear to be two very different products from the same company. Which one do you use and why?”

SHANE: That’s a great question. We get that a lot. When people look at building websites the first thing they do is go to Wordpress and all of a sudden they see these two options. Wordpress is basically a platform that allows you to organize content and create ways to display that content which is a website. There are two ways to use that.

First is Wordpress.com – it’s like free hosting, you basically get to use them on their platform and you can create a website for free but the problem is you’re going to be limited regarding the functionality of Wordpress.com, you’re not going to have access to all the different plugins you’re going to need, you’re going to be subject to their terms and conditions and your domain name is not going to be exactly what you want, it’s going to look unprofessional.

For example, my website is CoachXO.com and if I had done that on Wordpress it would say coachxo.wordpress.com. So basically Wordpress.com gives you a free place to start a website but you’re going to be severely limited in the long run when you’re running an online business.

Wordpress.org is basically where you download the Wordpress software which is open source and free and you can go create your own website at another hosting company. It’s called self hosting.

You can go to a place like Hostgator.com and you’re going to be able to build your website and do whatever you want. You’re going to be free to install things like Genesis which is a theme in Wordpress and create a more robust site. You’re going to have access to tons of plugins like shopping carts and all sorts of things.

So basically Wordpress.com is for blogging where you can just start a free website if you want to blog about something. Wordpress.org is what you’ll want to use if you want to start an online business and website and the cool thing about hosting companies like Hostgator.com is that they already have Wordpress built into them so when you sign up for you hosting which is 10 bucks a month, you’re going to be able to go ahead, click one button and install Wordpress so that’s what you’ll want to use when creating a website.

JOCELYN: I think a lot of people think that building a website is very complicated and that’s why they want to start with Wordpress.com but the thing about it is that it’s very simple to get your website, domain name and we talked about this on another podcast in the begin...

JOCELYN: Hey guys. Thanks for joining us for this week’s Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. Today, we’re going to be talking about email marketing and Shane and I have been using email marketing for over two years now. We’ve done a few things right and we’ve done a lot of things wrong.

SHANE: Way more than the things we’ve done right.

JOCELYN: But along the way, we have learned a few tricks that will help you get more people to open those emails. We are going to share some of those with you today but first we are going to read an iTunes review.

SHANE: Today’s review comes from Australia and this is the first time we’ve read a review from another country besides the United States. One of the main reasons is we actually just learned a little while ago that you can check your reviews from other countries. Our podcast is listened to now in over 80 countries, which absolutely blows our mind, but the reviews that you look at when you’re iTunes only show one country. So we have our set for default as the United States because that’s where we are. You can actually change that to view reviews that people have left you in other countries.

Today’s question comes from Jeremy DePrato and he says:

“What do you do when your expertise is in a competitive space? How do you niche down and get your true audience’s attention? How can anyone possibly make an impact when there are so many competitors in the market place?”

JOCELYN: Great question. We actually get this question like once a week. People are really just overwhelmed by the amount of people doing the same kind of thing they are. The thing you have to remember about any niche is that there are a lot of people on this earth, approximately 7 billion of them and a vast majority are now connected to the internet and one thing you need to remember is that people don’t relate to the product that you’re offering, they relate to you so you have to be relateable and you have to tell stories and get people to understand who you are and why you are doing what you’re doing. People don’t buy what you sell, they buy why you’re selling it. So you have to keep that in mind anytime you’re starting anything especially in online business.

SHANE: Take us for example. We are in a very competitive niche with our flipped lifestyle brand, we’re trying to help people get started online, there’s a lot of other people out there that are in this space and have a good foothold, guys like Pat Flan or Chris Tucker or Jeremy and Jason, there’s a lot of people that have big audiences but here’s the deal. Have you heard of all three of them? You might know two of them but not the third one and the same thing is going to be in your space.

Not everyone is going to know all of your competitors and if they find you first, it doesn’t matter how much competition is there and another thing is they may like you better, you, Jeremy, listen to our podcast, you go to our Facebook page, for some reason you have connected with Jocelyn and myself and that’s why you asked your question. You can find about internet marketing in a lot of places but when you found someone you related to, you stuck around and opened a dialogue and decided to work with us. It’s the same thing in any niche.

You’ve got to create your personality into your product and you’ve got to put yourself out there and people will relate to you and if they relate to you then they would want to buy their information from you. Even in the real world, there’s a lot of insurance agents in every town. Insurance is a very competitive market in the physical world but you go to your insurance agent because your dad had the same agent or you’re friends with that guy or you go to church with them or whatever, people are going to relate to you even in a competitive niche and that’s what you really want to do and we always tell people that competition is a good thing. When you see competition you see money. If there’s a lot of people selling something and a lot of sellers that means there’s a large market for it so don’...
