What's going on guys, welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. Awesome to be back with you as always this week, Jocelyn is right here besides me. We are bringing to you a flipped podcast this week. This is where we allow one of our consulting calls, they call in, they get to ask us questions about their online business, and we try to help them take it to the next level. We let you guys kind of be a fly on the wall, listen in so that you can kind of get the knowledge bombs and the value bombs that we are going to drop on our guests today. You can benefit from it as well. Our guests today are Brad and Laura Barrett. They actually have an online business that is already operating and we are going to try to help them take it to the next level. Brad, Laura welcome to the show.

“I love your podcast, guys. What podcasts do you guys listen to on a regular basis? Do you have any you recommend?”

This is a very, very interesting question, Jonathan, because…

SHANE: Because we are podcasters.

JOCELYN: … yeah, it may sound a little crazy because we do multiple, weekly podcast shows but I actually do not listen to any podcast regularly right now and I know…

SHANE: I force her to, basically.

JOCELYN: Yeah. I actually love listening to podcasts. There are tons of great ones out there. I mean, we listen to a lot and Shane will tell you some of the ones that we listen to.

SHANE: Or I listen to a lot not “we” because I can ever get her to listen to them with me.

JOCELYN: I do sometimes. You guys probably have heard me talk a lot of the time about being a very sequential person. I’m a person who can only wrap my head around one big thing at a time and right now, my big thing is home decorating. So any free few moments that I get are usually spent like on Pinterest right now trying to find things because I’m pretty much terrible at decorating my house so I want to find people who are good at it and maybe like copy them. But that is what most of my time is spent doing right now. It’s crazy to say but as a podcaster, I don’t really listen to any podcast regularly.

SHANE: What Jocelyn does though is Jocelyn would buy a course and just hammer it. She’s a very focused person so she might pick up a little video or how to do something or she’s trying to figure something out, instead of just listening to general podcast, she’ll just learn it and do it right then. That’s kind of how she consumes online information. I do listen to a couple of podcasts at the gym or maybe when I’m taking a shower. We love Pat Flynn. We still listen to Pat Flynn. We listen to every episode that comes out.

What’s up guys? Welcome back to another Q&A with S&J. Our question today comes from Tomas Allison and Tomas writes:

“My wife has recently been laid off from her private school and now has started a tutoring business on the side and she has created a website to expand her reach. She has taught kindergarten for over 24 years and we are wondering what kind of digital products and services that we could offer parents, children, and other teachers. Thank you in advance for your insight.”

JOCELYN: All right, thanks for your question, Tomas. This is a good one. We actually get a lot of emails from teachers just because that’s what our first digital products were in - education services - and I think that this is an interesting idea, this tutoring online. She could certainly do some type of e-book or like lesson plan material, maybe some special tutoring material for people who would want extra work for their kids. Maybe they could come on to your website and download some extra practice or things like that. You could certainly do some type of product like that. Mine has been very successful on my Elementary Librarian site, just a book that tells parents or well in my case, librarians, what to do and just help some with the actual materials that they need to get that done.

SHANE: Because she’s already in the tutoring, you could actually, you know, the problem with tutoring is it is trading time for dollars. Someone hires you to tutor for like $25 an hour. You show up, you can tutor that one kid, maybe you can bring in a second kid or something like that and work schedules and coordinate all that. The problem is, you can only reach so many people doing it that way, the old school way where you actually go tutor a person, like live and in person.

What she could do is set up a webinar. She could set up like an online tutoring service where kids could log in from all over the world and they could actually watch her teach something, teach a lesson, teach a material. She could even prerecord these lessons and they would just be there ready to watch at anytime somebody wanted to watch them and she could just kind of create like a live tutoring event but show a prerecorded video.

You could actually do this through LeadPages. She could just set up or she could show the video, there would be a chat box so the students could talk to her or the parents could ask her questions. That way, if 100 kids logged in to her lesson, she’s tutoring 100 kids for an hour instead of just two in a room over at her house or over the kid’s house. She could actually just setup in the comfort of your own home, she could start her webinar and host it. I say webinar but really, it’s her online tutoring session.

You want to use the right verbiage for whatever audience you’re kind of targeting, but you can use LeadPages. Create it where the students can communicate with her and if 100 kids show up and pay $25 per tutoring session, well, now that same hour that was producing $25, $50, or $75 is all of a sudden producing $2,500 and you’re doing the exact same amount of work.

The important thing to remember whenever you’re trying to expand online is scale. How can I get my product in front of more people and how can I work less hours to make more money? Those are two very important questions that you have to ...

JOCELYN: Hey guys, welcome back to today’s Q&A with S&J. Our question today is from Ben Adams. Ben writes:

“How do you balance all you do? I have a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-month old son. I want to create digital products but I struggle for time.”

Ben, we feel your pain. We have been there before. When we started our online businesses, our children were 3 and 18 months.

SHANE: A very difficult time. It was so hard.

JOCELYN: We totally understand where you’re coming from and our children are now 6 and almost 4, and it is very difficult to balance that time especially if you have a full time job that you’re working every day and you feel like that your time is really limited with your children anyway because you don’t get home until late to see them, and then you have to try to balance this online business thing to. So it is very difficult.

SHANE: The biggest advice that we give to most people when they ask us this question is to be super deliberate with your priorities and that kind of sounds like pie in the sky stuff like, “Oh, manage your time” and all that but it really is true. You’ve got to understand what is the most important thing in your life so that you can work all of the other things around that.

What Jocelyn and I do and this is what we did when we first started out as well even when we were working full time jobs, we would take our calendar and we would schedule hour by hour, 168 hours during the week. The first things we would always put in were our priorities, the things that meant the most to us.

If you’ve got time that you need to spend with your children, if you’ve got time you need to spend with your wife, you’ve got a full time job that you have to be at, you have to put those on your calendar first. You have to schedule out deliberate time – whether it’s just an hour a day, two hours a day. Whatever it is you’re spending with your family, with your job, whatever you’re doing that you have to do, your priorities- you’ve got to put those on the calendar first.

Then what happens is all of those open spaces -even though they are limited - those times become the only time you have and you have to focus so much and work so quickly, you’ll get so much more work done and be more efficient during those short times and you’ll still meet all of your other responsibilities first.

Make sure that when you’re trying to do this online business thing, you’re trying to start something on the side that you’re not prioritizing time with your online business first. You want to make sure that you’re prioritizing the things that really matter in your calendar and the only way you can do that is to 100% write everything down. If you’re not planning for every hour during the week, then you’re going to have wasted time.

You’re going to start working on your online business. You’ll say, “I’m going to d this for an hour and then play with my kids” then...
