Happy Birthday to Mayor Adam West! To celebrate this momentous day, my wife and I decided (more me, to be honest) to rank our favourite 3 Batman films of all time. My wife's memory couldn't unpack any of the pre-Nolan trilogy films into anything other than a single film, so we watched a few of them, plus a few animated films as well, to round out the list (it's a tough life). Women, throughout history, have had a bit of a tough time of it. Life is getting better for them, but like life, it's taking cinema a bit longer than it probably should to make feminism (just means gender equality, nothing scary) the norm. To celebrate the birthday on September 10th of Alison Bechdel (the originator of the Bechdel Wallace Test), my wife and I engage in a brief discussion of the depiction of female characters in films. Good examples, what needs to change, whether a film can be classed as feminist if it contains a super sexy gratuitous lesbian sex scene and our favourite feminist film of all time.

In a kind of continuation of Tiffany's FlightFlix, I watched two films this week that had marked similarities to them. Both were written by and starring women (although both directed by men, interestingly), both featuring the kind of comedy that falsely gets them referred to in movie magazines as 'raunchy' and both, bizarrely, featuring small roles for WWE professional wrestler John Cena. And when I see two films that my wife has seen and that are fairly similar and I haven't done a Flix in a while, you know what I have to do! Movie duel! Which is better? Which is worse? GoldSilverBronze is a fun game I play on Flix sometimes whereby myself and my guest will rank our favourite 3 films of a particular genre, type or back catalogue. I have, to this point, focused on male actors, something my darling, feminazi wife deems unacceptable. So here is me making amends. The DC Movie universe has, like a baby deer, taken its first few steps on shaky legs. Man of Steel was... good, if a little dour, and with a very poor grasp on its lead character, and Dawn of Justice gave us more of the same, with the addition of another poorly written hero in Batman. Sure, the legs wouldn't seem quite so shaky were they not being shone in such stark contrast to Marvel, whose elephant legs seem ever surer with each new wrinkle in their universe. So if DC are having trouble getting their heroes right, logic dictates that they delve into their luxuriantly deep barrel of villains for the next step, for it is indeed with villains that DC traditionally has the edge on their Marvel-ous rivals. The result is Suicide Squad, a film about bad guys doing good, whether they want to or not. The critics have given it a bit of a bashing, so I was very intrigued to see what David Ayer and crew could come up with. Here are my thoughts, along with the always welcome thoughts of the transcendent beauty that is Tiffany B.
