  • The Ripple Effect with Jen Ripple Editor-In-Chief DUN Magazine

For the past ten years, Jen Ripple has been living a changed life since she walked into a fly shop to learn how to tie flies. It was that class that made her fall in love with all things fly.
Jen has learned a lot since that first time, but what she quickly discovered is that women are not new to this sport at all. Going all the way back to the 1490’s, Jen learned that women were writing books, tying flies, and had the grit needed in the early days to stand proud and hold very prominent places in fly fishing history.
With DUN Magazine Jen hopes to introduce you to the history makers of today, amazing women from everyday life that are out there fishing and are gritting it out on our waterways. Come and listen to history newly realized now unfolding before your ears and eyes. Oh, and stay til the end to hear why we titled this podcast “The Ripple Effect”. It’ll make you smile.

In addition to her work at the magazine, she is a member of the Board of Directors for Fly Fishers International and a member of the Board of Directors for the American Fly Fishing Trade Association.
Jen is a professional angler and conference speaker, who spends her time empowering women in fly fishing by teaching fly tying and fly casting clinics, speaking nationwide on issues regarding women in fly fishing and a variety of fishing topics, and devoting her time to conservation efforts through nonprofits.
A sounding board for women in this currently male-dominated sport, Jen has created a home base for women worldwide to connect and engage in the art of fly fishing.

  • A Force of Nature – meet Becca K. Powell
When we describe Becca K. Powell as a force of nature, we mean she’s full of energy, unstoppable and unforgettable! Becca is as passionate about the environment as she is about Fly Fishing – that’s what we love about her.
As development director for the nonprofit Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Becca works every day in one way or another bringing awareness to the Chattahoochee River that serves more than 5 million Georgians and provides trout fishing at it’s finest.
Her passion and love for Fly Fishing is contagious. When you’re on the river with Becca (an avid, extremely accomplished, and knowledgeable angler), she is a mentor and a teacher in the most subtle way; you never notice. But when you leave her, you’ve not only learned a lot, you’ve had a blast and can’t wait to get back on the water with her. Most importantly, there’s nothing like fishing with a good friend!
Becca is a proud board member of the Georgia Women Fly Fishers, Fly Fishers International, Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Coordinator of Reeling In Recovery. Becca is also an associate editor for DUN Magazine. She is a part of the Orvis family, assisting with the #5050onthewater initiative in the Atlanta market. We hope you enjoy getting to know Becca and we look forward to having her on again very soon!

Becca K. Powell is no stranger to the outdoors, having spent the summers of her youth in the mountains of North Georgia and hiking the Appalachian Trail; her college years in Boone, NC, camping, hiking, skiing, fishing and rock climbing; and more than a decade working within the Waterkeeper movement.
As development director for the nonprofit Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Becca works to bring awareness to the river that serves more than 5 million Georgians and sustains one of the south’s most thriving trout fisheries. When she’s not working, she can be found with a fly rod in hand. Some of Becca’s favorite moments are spent traveling with her husband Justin to Belize for bonefish, the Pacific North West in search of steelhead, or the Florida Keys where she’s still dreaming of landing a tarpon on the fly.
Becca’s passion is the environment, and it shows not only through her career, but also her volunteer work. She is a proud member of the Georgia Women Fly Fishers, Fly Fishers International, and Trout Unlimited. Becca is also an associate editor for DUN Magazine and was featured as the Summer 2018 cover story. • The Gift of a Lifetime
What is it like to have a Mom who is a fly fishing angler? My son Ian is not a fly fisherman, he’s a musician, a golfer and an absolute IT whiz and he’s been by my side for 31 years.
After a long road from addiction to recovery, I was looking for a new focus in my life. Out of the blue one day, Ian said to me “You should learn how to fly fish”. I had to stop and think, where did that idea come from?  Of course, I love fishing, but hadn’t fished in many years. I had never even thought of fly fishing as something I could learn.
I took Ian’s idea and ran with it. That’s how my journey began. Ian, my dear family, and friends, were always there to listen to me talk about knots, flies, rods, waders, and that stuff we find so enthralling. Ian encouraged me every step of the way.
We all have that person or persons in our lives that pushes us and encourages us, no matter how much we get on their nerves. They are happy for us to start new journeys, and excited for us when we succeed.
That’s what I have loved the most about my fly fishing journey, is hearing everyone’s story on how they got started, and why this sport is important to them. For me, fly fishing has changed my life. Thank you Ian, for the gift of a lifetime. – Sylvia Huron

  • The 12 Days of Fishmas with Jimmy Harris
The Fly Girl Fish girls issued a challenge to Jimmy Harris, Co-Owner of Unicoi Outfitters: find 12 items that an angler would love to receive as a holiday gift, but keep it under $100.
Jimmy loved the challenge because it really made him think about what is necessary for a new angler in this gadget heavy sport. We all love gadgets, but Jimmy selected 12 items he felt were key to having a good experience on the water. We were impressed by how knowledgeable and willing Jimmy was to welcome Fly Girl Fish to Unicoi Outfitters.
All of these items are affordable and very useful. Best of all they will make the angler in your life a happy person when they receive them.
At Unicoi Outfitters his team is focused on making women as comfortable as possible when choosing gear and gadgets for their fly fishing needs.

  • Family, Fishing & Friends with Shandy Danford and Callie Freeman
Whether you get out on the water with Dad or with friends, you’re building great memories. Today’s guests, Shandy and Callie, both had great experiences with their fathers, which are dear to their heart. A fishing event is also the place where Shandy and Callie met.
Today they enjoy fly fishing together in the state of Oregon. Trout, steelhead, and salmon are all fair game with these two ladies. They talk openly about the mental shift it takes when you go from catch and keep, to catch and release, and how their growing up experiences shaped how they view fishing.
The bonds that are created being out on the water can last a lifetime. Join us today as we meet Shandy and Callie.

    Bios:

Shandy Danford: “I was born and raised in Hawaii, have lived in a handful of beautiful destinations such as Southern California, Colorado, Oregon and most recently Australia for 16 years. I’ve always been a water baby, traveler, a student of experiences rather than in a classroom. All of my travels have revolved around the surf and the cultures that support the waves and the oceans. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined dreaming of destinations around a creek, stream, river, brackish estuary or mangrove to chase fresh or saltwater fish with a fly!
I now call Salem the place where I rest my head. My “ride or die” is Rob and I am mom to Fred the Bengal cat and to Lark the…scruffy butt woolie bugger terrier thing… also known as the best little river dog a girl could ask for!
I liken myself to the 3rd grader in the K-12 School of Fly Fishing and I’ve never been so pumped!!! The learning curve is a harsh one but so worth the homework and “research” time on the water.
I am always down for a road trip, an adventure and any excuse to get out of doing chores! I dream to one day incorporate a fly rod and my dirtbike and to find water sources off the beaten track via single track and trails!
Life is here to live it!”

Callie Freeman, a Kentucky native, is currently a stay at home mom to two and military spouse with a professional background in biology and entomology (she studied bugs before the kids and military moves!).
Callie became an avid angler at a young age thanks to her father’s influence. Their shared fascination with fly fishing began while watching Flip Pallot and Jose Wejebe poll the flats on Walker’s Cay Chronicles and The Spanish Fly. Soon they began fly fishing for small mouth bass and panfish around local streams. Fishing took a backseat however to graduate school and subsequently the birth of two children. After moving to coastal North Carolina she regained her interest in fly fishing and began frequenting fly club meetings and picked up a rod again.
Callie also has a passion for conservation and in the past has volunteered with an all women’s chapter of Ducks Unlimited and spent two years on the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina Board of Directors. Currently, Callie volunteers with PDX Women on the Fly, an affiliate group of the Oregon Council of Trout Unlimited. She has witnessed how passionate and effective women can be when they work together and hopes fly fishing will inspire more ladies to get involved in conservation. Callie is also working towards receiving her Casting Instructor certification through Fly Fishers International so that she may better assist in growing the fly fishing community. She looks forward to the future and finding a forever home where she can dig in and make a difference!
Callie’s latest move to Oregon has put her within range of some of the most hallowed trout, steelhead and salmon fishing rivers in America. She is determined to fish as many rivers as possible and learn as much about targeting these native species as she can during her time in that beautiful state!

  • Mack Bryson: Leaving a Legacy
30 years ago, when Mack developed a passion for trout fishing, he didn’t think it would turn into a business. Now that he owns and operates Southeastern Flyworks, Mack is beginning to teach his own daughters Reynolds and Parker how to tie flies on their own for the pure enjoyment of the craft.
Mack was mentored into the sport of fly fishing as a boy in Virginia.  Today, now in Albany Georgia, Mack is widely known for tying exquisite custom flies for anglers around the country.
Today’s podcast is about a passion turned into a business, catching fish in the waters around Georgia and beyond, and about the legacy of a fly tying craftsman and dad passing the baton to his daughters.
