  • Podcast 40 - The Do's & Don'ts Of Slide Design

Sam and I sit down and discuss some common pitfalls that should be avoided when giving a talk.

    1. The first slide should not have your name, credentials, address, blood type, and date on it. Stop doing this!
    2. Don’t put in slides that you don’t plan on using. Skipping slides during your presentation shows poor preparation.
    3. If you are using a video... download it first with keepvid.com. DON’T rely on internet to show your video.
    4. Slides are only needed to illustrate what you are saying.
    5. Your last slide should not say “Questions?” Work a spot in for questions before you conclude. The last segment should be thought out and not left up to the audience.

  • Podcast 39 - A Stubborn Old Mule Named Hypoxia w/ Brad Garmon

My buddy Brad Garmon (@1stArrivingClin) and I sat down and discussed the different options for a patient in refractory hypoxia. Brad has a mental flow chart that he uses when trying to improve oxygenation in the vented and spontaneous breathing patient. I had him externalize this flow chart and talk about it on the FOAMfrat Podcast!

  • Podcast 34 -The Art Of The Intercept With Joel Porter
The paramedic intercept is a skill just as any other. Commonly overlooked during initial training, effective communications used during the patient handoff plays a significant role in patient care. Actually, the Joint Commission concluded that 70% of hospital-related “sentinel events” involved communications, with 50% of those events occurring during patient care handoffs. (J Quality Patient Safety, 2010 Feb; 36(2)) Think of the last time you were giving report, just to have the accepting physician or RN ask questions that would’ve already been answered had they been listening, and not just hearing you. I constantly listen to gripes from my peers how they felt disrespected by hospital staff, only to arrive on a scene with them and they do the exact same thing to a lower-scope provider. This hypocrisy is avoidable. Check out the blog at www.FOAMfrat.com
