  • S3:E2: Added Sugars in School Meals
During the 2021-22 school year, every child across the U.S. will have access to free school meals, a result of flexibilities issued through the USDA. Yet for years, students have been served tons of foods that are loaded with excess, added sugars—things like chocolate milk, cereal, and condiments. Even more concerning is that some of the foods can exceed a child’s entire day’s worth of added sugars.
In this episode, I sat down with Colin Schwartz, MPP, Deputy Director of Federal Affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Schwartz works on nutrition policy and advocacy and has conducted research about school meals and added sugars in school foods.
We talked about what parents can expect this year with school meals, how much sugar kids are actually consuming, what parents need to know about “copycat foods,” and what they can do to advocate for healthier options.
    Welcome
3:18 Now that we’re heading into the new school year, are many of the COVID-19 waivers still in place and what should parents expect?
4:33 What work are you and the Center for Science in the Public Interest doing to move Universal School Meals forward?
7:03 This year, California and Maine decided to offer free school meals. Do you think in the next few months other states will follow suit?
8:30 Will Universal School Meals happen?
9:13 Are the Trump era rollbacks still in place?
11:23 Are schools allowed to serve strawberry and chocolate milk?
15:05 Discussions around the nutrition of school lunch in the U.S. are often focused on sodium, saturated fat, and whole grains but what about added sugars?
18:55 What are the most common school foods that are high in added sugars?
21:13 What are “copycat foods” in school cafeterias?
26:23 Are there groups working to reduce the amount of added sugars in school meals?
27:23 What can parents do if they want—or need to—get school meals and avoid or reduce added sugars?
32:12 What can parents do to advocate for healthier school meals?

    LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW
Colin Schwartz talks about President Biden’s American Families Plan and the proposed new nutrition standards.
Colin Schwartz talks about how California adopted universal free school meals and Maine passed a law to provide free school meals through 2023.
Colin Schwartz mentions the 2021 study he co-authored that showed 9 out of 10 schools exceed added sugars in their meals.
Colin talks about The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 recommendations of less than 10 percent of added sugars per day.

  • S3:E1: What Are Added Sugars?
Whether it’s homemade chocolate chip cookies or a trip to your favorite ice cream spot, we all love to give our kids a sweet treat. Yet research shows ‘treats’ have become an everyday thing, and most kids, including babies and toddlers, are getting way too much sugar in their diets. While natural sugars like those found in fruit are nutritious because they also have vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it’s the added sugars kids are consuming that are linked to childhood obesity, chronic diseases, and risk factors for heart disease, among others. Filling up on foods with added sugars also displaces the nutritious foods kids need and fosters preferences for sweetened foods and drinks.
In this episode, I sat down with Melissa Halas, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and nationally recognized plant-based and pediatric nutrition expert. Halas is also the founder of SuperKidsNutrition, the first nutrition mega-site for kids’ and family nutrition.
We talk about what added sugars are, the sneaky places they show up, and how to spot them on food labels. We also answer the common question, does sugar make kids hyper? and explore easy, delicious ways to offer something sweet without going overboard.
    Welcome
5:30 We all know sugar isn’t good for us, but why do we need to limit it in our kids’ diets?
13:33 Can too much sugar affect kids’ food preferences and eating habits throughout their lives?
18:08 Can sugar make your kids hyper?
    21:50 What are added sugars?
23:23 What about natural sugars like honey and agave—are they really natural or can they be considered added sugars too?
25:29 Can our tastebuds tell the difference between the two?
26:24 What are the recommendations for added sugars in our kids’ diets?
33:35  Where are added sugars showing up?
38:43 What are easy, practical ways we can limit added sugars?
43:25 What are tips for parents to allow their kids to enjoy some treats without going overboard?

    LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW
Melissa talks about this 2018 study which found that  99% of toddlers surveyed consumed an average of 7 teaspoons on any given day—more than what’s in a Snicker’s bar.

  • S2:E9: How To Talk To Your Kids About Food
What we say to our kids can have an impact on them in positive and negative ways, and when we’re trying to raise healthy eaters, we often put a lot of focus on the food, but the words we use are just as important.

  • Season #2 Ep #5: Extreme Picky Eating: What You Should Know
Most kids have some type of picky eating behavior, but for some kids, their picky eating seems out of the norm and over the top, making meal and snack times difficult—maybe even impossible. Perhaps they refuse to try new foods or refuse to eat vegetables altogether. Maybe they get upset at mealtimes, or have meltdowns before parties or social gatherings because of the food or the pressure to eat. Either way, extreme picky eating can cause kids and their parents a lot of stress and anxiety. In this episode, I sat down with Jenny McGlothlin, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, a certified speech-language pathologist and certified lactation counselor specializing in the evaluation and treatment of feeding disorders for children and teens, and the co-author of, “Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating.”
Jenny and I talked about what’s normal for kids when it comes to picky eating,  how to tell if your kid is an “extreme" picky eater, how to take the focus off nutrition and create a positive food environment, and so much more.

  • Season #2 Ep #4: How to Get Picky Eaters To Eat Vegetables and Try New Foods
Encouraging your kids to eat their vegetables and try new foods is no easy feat. Perhaps you’ve tried bribing them with dessert, cajoling them with statements like “just take a bite, you might like it,” or tried sneaking vegetables into soups and smoothies, but nothing has worked and you’re ready to give up. In this episode, I’m talking with Jenny Friedman, M.S. a registered dietitian who works with extremely picky eaters and children with severe food aversions, and author of “Stories of Extreme Picky Eating.” Jenny and I talk about the surprising reasons kids won’t eat, sensory issues that can lead to picky eating, and what parents often say that can make picky eating worse. We also talk about what the research shows about getting kids to eat their vegetables and try new foods, and what you can do if you’re really concerned about your picky eater. Be sure to sign up for the free video course, Turn Your Picky Eaters Into Little Foodies: https://www.julierevelant.com/free-video-email-course/.
