                • FTR 021: Do You Need a Mentor? Who In Your Life Can You Mentor?

Brin Kline is owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL.  His career in automotive repair spans 17 years with nearly 8 years as an owner.

Brin knows that the automotive repair industry is ever changing.  Diagnosing and repairing automobiles of today have many more requirements for up to date training than they did in years past.  Today, a technician must network with and befriend other likeminded individuals, commit a lot of their personal time to craft their skills so they can confidently, efficiently and accurately diagnose the issues that they face on a daily basis.

Brin’s journey to becoming an advocate for improving the automotive repair industry at the national level began when he started to attend conferences and training.  At these events, he rubbed shoulders with amazing people who, recognize the need for a national automotive repair industry step-by-step protocol for entry-level recruitment and training, continuing education events, and conferences, sharing of case studies, and helping businesses grow.

One of Brin’s favorite professional moments was being able to attend the 2016 Spring NASTF meeting at the Sheraton in Overland Park, KS. The topic was attracting and retaining technicians.

Brin feels that being a shop owner of a company with great potential is not what gives him a voice. He believes that being an enlightened industry professional is what gives him a voice.

Enlightenment through training, networking with like-minded professionals, collaborating, sharing ideas, knowledge and our experiences with each other, removing pride and egos, getting involved, receiving help and helping each other is the way to a better future and a better industry.

Brin enjoys building case studies for most of the issues that he diagnoses. He has plans of sharing them with training companies, trade magazines and at some point, possibly presenting them himself. In fact, some friends and Brin are working on a project that allows sharing of their diagnostic knowledge and experiences with others. This friendship is a perfect example of the power of attending conferences and networking. Listen to Brin’s previous episodes HERE.

                        • FTR 020: The Automotive Aftermarket Must Decide To Charge for a Comprehensive Vehicle Inspection

Craig O’Neill urges the industry to come together and decide to charge for a comprehensive vehicle inspection before it is too late and it becomes another free undervalued service.

                          Key Talking Points

                          • He wants to know the root cause of the tech being challenged on taking too long to do a DVI.
                          • He is not OK that some techs are not being paid for the time they are doing inspections.
                          • It is very rare that a plumber, electrician, or HVAC person would do an inspection for free. There is usually a base service charge to find out the problem or to get a health checkup on your home’s system.
                          • Craig says that the DVI has no value if there isn’t a charge.
                          • The inspections are being done to identify vehicles health and to find problems to bring peace of mind for the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
                          • The industry must charge for the complete health report of the customer vehicle.
                          • The power of this service, when sold to your client, shows the path for maintenance and repair for the next year.
                          • Include a shorter version of a DVI in your oil change service and increase the price of that service.

                                  Key Talking Points

                                  • Everyone is talking about the technician shortage. We need solutions not just talk.
                                  • The Diesel industry can solve their problem overnight but it will put the mechanical service industry at risk. A disruptor initiative.
                                    • Diesel are paying their technicians more as entry-level techs.
                                    • They want to be sure their entry-level students have the tools to do their job.
                                    • They are providing the tools that are needed and will pay $18-$22 per hour.

                                    • Without a tool program and a good entry level pay program in automotive service, the diesel industry will start to poach from automotive tech schools throughout the country.
                                    • SP careers has a database of 45,000 resumes of students looking for opportunities. 33,000 of them are looking for opportunities in automotive service, collision and diesel repair. Only 11,000 are looking for diesel work.
                                      • The diesel industry is happy to recruit from the automotive student database.

                                      • Automotive service must take a long hard look at our pay practices, benefits, and tools.
                                      • We are competing with aviation, energy, government, fleets (diesel). They are all paying more than automotive service.
                                        • Providing tools can be a retention strategy.
