    Ā

(4:16-04:31) Hello, I am right now with Genecia at East Coast, we are chatting and we are chatting out a very fruitful session so thank you Genecia.

    Ā

(4:37-05:17) We had so much discussions and plan out and chat out for first quarter 2018 and I have a lot of work to do. I’m very excited because very focused in direction so the 3 things I learned today. I think first things first It’s important to have a road map. It’s important to check out your calendar, work for the year so that you know where you are going. Then the second thing is very important also that you have a mentor.Ā

    Ā

(05:19-05:59) Because I have done my learning core was very steep when I was running my furnishing business without a mentor. The struggle was like was very real. It takes a long process. I have to do a lot of trial and error. Basically, the learning core is very steep. So with a mentor basically, Genecia has helped to reduce the learning core, shortcut the process. She had been done there, done that. Having here to guide me, along chatting out together with me that was really very valuable.Ā

    Ā

Grab every opportunity that you may have with the eagerness to learn to be a better version of yourself. Ms. Lilian shared:

    Ā

(6:03-06:20) Based on my experience without a mentor and now embarking with a new business with a mentor is really totally different. A lot of time is saved and then the third thing was grow and met the mentor and the magic follows.

    Ā

(9:07-09:33) I want to take this opportunity to thank Genecia. She helped me to see all this, all the experience I have on the very view, wisdom within that you always remind me . I will say that I wanna thank Genecia because there’s like all this experience, knowledge and all that. I will not know how to put them into this whole blueprint if we haven’t met.

    Ā

(10:20-11:01) So to generate leads and to promote my book and cost so yeah these are the 3 objectives the magic phano is. So just want to come off line and do the sharing on what I’m doing today put peacefully to do this intentionally and really take courage to embark on this journey.

Worrying won’t make it any better. Dwell in possibility.

    Ā

Live life with the courage to find your purpose in life. Do not be afraid to be open-minded with new learnings and experiences like Ms. Lilian did in her life.

    Ā

(12:11-12:25) I think really with the help of a mentor really sharpen the whole process because I’ve been on a journey without a mentor and I can really experience the difference and this business is totally brand new to me because it’s really going from offline to online so online business so I am really very thankful to have a mentor to guide me on this.Ā

    Ā

(13:16-13:26) Less fearful because I know what to do. I can see the whole picture so that takes away a lot of anxieties from me.Ā

    Ā

(13:43-13:56) It is to live a life with courage, purpose and freedom. And my main objective, for this whole business, my whole purpose for this online business is to awaken the courage in you.

  • 53: The Astro Awani Donna Interview: You Can Have It All - With Purpose, Passion And Faith

    FWEP00053 Genecia Alloura

    Ā

Accept the challenges so that you can feel the victory in your own time.

    Ā

Behind every success is a story of hardships, challenges and even breakdowns. In her younger days, Ms. Genecia has to work to support her studies because she knew she wanted more and she deserves more.

    Ā

(2:00-2:22) My name is Genecia Alloura. I’m from Singapore. Basically I have done a lot in my life. I am the founder of Soul RIch Woman and I run multiple businesses. I have done many things that I’m very proud of and also my vision is to really help more women to be better in their lives.

    Ā

(02:26-03:00) When I was 14 my dad wasn’t financially, he lost some money through stocks and shares so we were financially very tight so we needed to stop . Money was a problem so I kind of stopped my dream and you know what my mom by then she say why don’t go and try instructor fit and I said No! I don’t want. Why I need to become an instructor fit, I’m not interested that’s not want I want to do but she forced me.

    Ā

(03:05-03:30) So I didn’t talk to her for 2 weeks. I remember very clearly because it’s such a big thing in my life. Imagine telling a teenager hey, you have to work now, you have to support yourself in school. After 13 years of a bit of not too bad life then suddenly you have to work and earn money, earn for a living, Oh my God! That’s terrible! I was bitter because that was tough. Ā

    Ā

(03:31-03:57) When I took the certificate then I need to start to teach, right? So that’s how my life was. 5 AM in the morning I need to go to school and then after that in the evening after extra curricular activities, I went to teach so imagine this I reach home in about 11 PM. Ā

    Ā

Worry about the best way to move forward.

    Ā

Everybody doesn’t have a perfect life. They can have something that you don’t have but learn to appreciate and love the things you currently have. You will have your time as what happened on Ms. Genecia.

    Ā

(04:13-04:36) Mentally it was challenging and everybody was changing bags, changing hand phones and they were doing stuff like going shopping, going for movies so I was kind of isolated as well I was on my own. The girls in my class, I was being mocked because I wear the same clothes all the time. Some other girls will see the bra and they will say you have been wearing the same bra, you know.

    Ā

(05:15-06:01) My heart was closed because I will not be able to trust anybody again and do anything again and person that could speak to me needed to be somebody who has been through worse than me. Yeah because if you’re telling me you haven’t been through life who are you to tell me in what you know so that part I was depressed, I was suicidal not clinically but I was basically crying everyday and I literally wanted to jump out of my window of my home. My mom, she kind ofĀ  stopped me for doing that.Ā

    Ā

(06:28-07:06) Thanks to this person who was my customer before because he took my grooming class. First I was an image consultant, right? But he spoke to me. I didn’t want to listen to him also definitely because who are you even though we are friends. Who are you to tell me on how to live my life if you haven’t been there? Only then that he revealed he was bankrupt. He was going through bankruptcy for 11 years. He was bankrupt and in debt at 21. I was like, What? And it turned around and then he became a millionaire and to me that was a story to be reckoned with.

    Ā

Learning never ends. Have the courage to do things you are afraid of.

    Ā

When you want more, you must strive more. Learn new skills and knowledge that will help you attain your goals. Embrace changes that will make you better as what Ms. Genecia did.

    Ā

(07:20-07:44) So I invested time to learn about online business, e-commerce, I learned about marketing. I spent time studying about social media and that was when I stop wasting time for money and that was when I make my money and that was when I and that was when I say, Hey! I can do this! I did it!Ā

    Ā

(08:07-08:38) Before I joined the pageant, I mean, during school I was bullied. I was been mocked because financially we were notĀ  my background was not financially and I had to wear the same clothes. Some people laugh at me, people mocked at me. Materially I was not rich, okay? Some people feed Ā  say nasty things about me, gossip about me, back stab me, wherever they can and that left a scar and many wounds in my life.

    Ā

(09:01-09:50)Ā  It was not for them. It was not to win them and it was more like a challenge for myself because during that time I learned to put makeup while on the go, catching up on the bus, sleeping in the bus and then try to change my heels at the same time I look glam when we get out after the car. We literally learn many skills in my pageant days. And winning it is like a gift from God and joining the pageant after winning Ms. Singapore Universe Runner up and then participating in Ms. Singapore International and winning it, opened doors for me to travel the world, to meet friends around the globe and finding new friendships that I never thought possible.

    Ā

10:36-11:17: One of the things I learned, took the responsibility to love them and accept them for who they are and not to give up on them or give up on myself. I could have just walked away and say Bye, I don’t love you anymore and that could be the life I chose but I told myself, No! I said, Genecia you must be responsible. No more lame blame. No more shame and no more self justification on how your life should be in this manner but rather Are you a woman of humility? Are you a woman of acceptance of love of overflowing faith.

    Ā

(11:23-11:56) Can you imagine if I teach women how to live their life with purpose, passion and my family sucks because I cannot only live for myself waking up in the morning not knowing that I am in line and in sync with my purpose, with my vision, with my passion. It’s like I needed to in line myself. In the years I’ve taken the responsibility of clearing, forgiving, loving myself? A lot ofĀ  self work to work on myself worth,Ā  my self doubt my fear.Ā

    Ā

Life is short. Time is fast. Enjoy every moment!

    Ā

People come and go so savor your moments with your loved ones. Life is short just to be angry and fill your heart with hatred. Learn to let go and accept that no one is perfect. Ms. Genecia shared:

    Ā

(12:07-12:30) That I finally embraced him for who he is because there are so many things that happened like the blame of why you lost money the last time. So 14 years old, I needed to go out and work. But you know, I have grown up and it’s no longer the same situation anymore and my dad also grow older so I tell myself, what for?Ā

    Ā

(12:32-13:13) Life! I am living my life because of my family and I love them so much. I really love them. I have them in my hand phone everyday I message them because I realize that throughout my life even though I have grown through thick and thin I realize that everybody has left and gone, come and gone. They were the ones who are still there and love me unconditionally and to me having this realization and wisdom, I realize that is so valuable.

    Ā

(13:15-13:37) But now I understand I will not be where today not ...

  • 52: Brendan Yong Scale Up Marketing: 3 Secrets To Maximizing Your Facebook Profits

    FWEP00052 Brendan Yong

    Ā

In this episode Brendan Yong will share about how to maximize Facebook profits. He is the Lead Consultant of Skill and Marketing to help customers do marketing automation. Today he will share the 3 Secrets to Maximizing Facebook Profits.

    Ā

    Social Media Marketing and Wastages
Every entrepreneur nowadays is doing social media marketing. But not everyone gets the result that they expect. Here’s what Brendan has to say:Ā

    Ā

(01:34 - 01:40) A lot of people are really doing some form of Facebook marketing or social media marketing or even SEM marketing

    Ā

(01:42 - 01:44) What is happening is actually you're getting a lot of eyeballsĀ

    Ā

(02:16 - 02:28) the truth is a lot of things happen along the way and what happens is that, although you might have a lot of eyeballs but not many of them actually take the action of submit or make an inquiry.Ā

    Ā

(02:31 - 02:32) that is what we call a lost traffic situation

    Ā

(02:38 - 02:45) So the other thing is once they buy or once they opt-in into your funnels then the other thing is how do you convert them into actual saleĀ

    Ā

(02:47 - 02:55) This is what we call the drop-off so before they even buy they do not respond to your sales pitch and eventually they drop offĀ

    Ā

(03:01 - 03:13) Once the customer buy once you don't do anything with them later on Why? Because these customers have value to you and this is what we call the customer life value.Ā

    Ā

(03:15 - 03:27) You should optimize this customer life value as well because you spend so much money in drawing the eyeballs to your website and through your e-commerce polls and then you're not maximizing the value per customer? I think that's a big waste.Ā

    Ā

    Ā

What happens if you don't convert?
Here Brendan further explains why there is no conversion despite the many views your Ads might be receiving:Ā

    Ā

(04:48 - 04:49) You're targeting at a wrong phase of the marketing funnelĀ

    Ā

    (04:51 - 04:55) A marketing funnel typically has 3 stagesĀ

    Ā

(05:07 - 05:18) These stages are called Top of the Funnel or ToFu and MoFu Middle of the Funnel and you have the bottom of the funnel.

    Ā

(05:24 - 05:32) Bottom of the funnel means that people are already in a decision-making process and they already reached the stage that they are thinking which solution should they buy.Ā

    Ā

(05:38 - 05:48) The middle of the funnel group, they know about the solution but they may not be in a decision to buy yet because maybe they're short on budget.

    Ā

(05:51 - 05:58) And the top of the funnel are people who may not even know that they have a need or is not a top priority for them.

    Ā

(06:52 - 06:56)Ā  No wonder that a lot of you may have a lot of traffic but don't actually convert, because the audience is simply not readyĀ

    Ā

(07:02 - 07:08) It's because your Ads are BoFu Ads but you're getting ToFu leads or MoFu leadsĀ

    Ā

(07:11 - 07:18)Ā  To improve your Ad conversion you might need different versions of those advertisements that you do.Ā

    Ā

(07:21 - 07:30) To appeal to ToFu leads is that you are trying to solve a problem. The Ads in this phase is what we call a problem-related Ad.Ā

    Ā

(08:50 - 09:00) Now the MoFu Ads you are trying to run ads that is related to debunking all the other alternatives and trying to tell the audience why your product is the more superior solution.Ā

    Ā

(09:03 - 09:08) And in the BoFu Ads you are looking at, like free trials $20, $50 discounts and all that.Ā

    Ā

(11:13 - 11:33) By moving the audience that clicked on your different Ads back to another, previous part of the funnel that helps you to narrow down and convert them slowly so that when they are ready to buy they will be thinking of you because you appeal to the right motivation.Ā

    Ā

3 stages of the customer journey
So here are a few more details from Brendan that will help you understand your customer’s journey in order to effectively target them:Ā
    Ā
Ā (12: 11 - 12:15) Ā  The first stage is what you call attract. So in the attract phase we identify the right target market.Ā

    Ā

(12:24Ā  - 12:34)Ā  After that bring them into somewhere that you can capture their information like name, email. So that will be the Top of the funnel kind of ads and middle of the funnel engagement ads.Ā
    Ā
Ā (12:35 - 12:43)Ā  And finally look at how to move them into trial product using your free trial method or using your free consult method.Ā
    Ā
Ā (14:12 - 14:32)Ā  Wastage can happen, if you don’t have these process to capture the middle or final you don’t have enough communication with them once they get into your sales funnel and of course when they actually make an inquiry that don’t immediately turn up into a sale, you don’t follow up with them. So that’s a lot of wastage so that is the second phase.Ā  Ā Ā
    Ā
Ā (14:35 - 14:42) The sell phase is not literally you trying to sell but how do you convert a lead to a sale.Ā
    Ā
Ā (14:53 - 14:59)Ā  Here is where email marketing and videos and YouTube videos will help a lot.Ā

(16: 24 - 16:27) So the first step about maximizing customer value is really to create a ā€œWOWā€ experience for theĀ  customer.Ā
    Ā
    Ā (16:29 - 16:32) When that happens you can achieve 3 Rs.Ā
    Ā
Ā (16:38 - 16:49)Ā  The 3Rs are: REPEAT SALES, REFERRALS and REVIEW AND RATINGS

    Ā

    Ā

    Key Takeaways:
    1. Maximize your sales funnel.
    2. Target audience using the correct ads for maximum results.

    3. Provide superb customer service.
Ā 4. Do immediate follow up.
Ā 5. With the use of the 3 stages of the customer's journey you will see leads coming in.

  • 51: (Part 2 of 2) Claire Nazar Director of Kalco Law And LifeBuilders.com.sg: Find Your Balance Between Work And A Successful Marriage

    FWEP00051 Claire Nazar

    Ā

Today, we have a special guest her name is Claire Nazar, director of Kalco Law and also Lifebuilders. Claire is a very down to earth lady and because of this I want to guest her story out there and share it with you and I hope that you like it. Ā

    Ā

DIscover your calling and be passionate to achieve it!

    Ā

Your calling is where you can apply your talents and where you feel you can help on other people. Fulfill your calling outside your comfort zone. Ms. Claire shared:

    Ā

(01:15-01:44) Yes I had a lot of family time. But I was also struggling with the fact that I didn’t feel fulfilled personally. Yes, none just basically going to job 9 to 5, feed the family but I don’t have a sense of personal achievement and that was when, you know, my husband was saying to me, have you thought about just coming out and starting up your practice in the way that you would like it to be and so I did a bit of soul searching and that’s why I joined Kalco Law LOC so we are 5 directors.Ā

    Ā

(01:52-02:15) She’s for the very poor family lawyer even though she does the divorce work but she’s for poor family offices, very very poor family. Sometimes her kids will come over to work, we bring them to work so stuff like that so we have a very family friendly environment and that’s when I started thinking about what I really wanted to do?Ā  I mean with my legal expertise in which what I really wanna cover?Ā

    Ā

(02:16-03:00) I thought about all the mitigation cases I had. They always involved follow ups between directors, company directors and usually they start of as friends. Friends who then say,Ā  we’ve got a dream, great idea, less pump of money they start a business and the next thing you knowĀ  they are arguing and suing one another that’s why I come in. So I was thinking instead of damage control, why not prevention? Just as same reason seek passion why education work is simply because I think prevention can help. You can help couples prevent themselves fromĀ  going the wrong road. I’m sure we can also prevent in the area of business, you know, young start-ups entrepreneurs form going down the wrong road.Ā

    Ā

    Why documents are important?

    Ā

Documents create a good relationship and will avoid conflicts that may happen in the future. Ms. Claire mentioned why documents are important mostly in business.

    Ā

(03:31-04:12) Well the very first line of the bed is you got to really know the person you are dealing with. Check out their friends, check out from your business contacts that this is person is trustworthy that’s one thing. And the other thing I must say is more of a no no. Don’t deal with somebody who’s not willing to sign a contract with you, black and white. If they discuss terms of business on how we gonna run things right in the beginning. In my experience is that why I end up defending my clients in court or suing the other side on behalf of my clients is usually because of contract. Ā

    Ā

(04:42-05:11) So to me is this if a person takes offense in you drafting a contract that’s already a signal, a red flag that should go over and say no, no! Because if you are forthright as a person you shouldn’t have any problems making good on you wordly promise and of course you are entering a business where you are entering into a legal relationship. There should be a proper way for you to exit from the company. Proper way for you to assess how your profits should be split.Ā

    Ā

(05:53-06:10)Ā  A document is important because everything that’s in there is exactly what you agreed. You can check the terms just to be sure. Is this what we have agreed on, if it’s not? Then you should talk about it before you signed on the dotted line so that when you sign it you can say this is all we have discussed.Ā

    Ā

Ms. Claire shared her vision and her belief as she continues to help married couples. Ms. Claire shared:

    Ā

(07:24-08:02) I would say that there’s no harm in actually going to see a lawyer for consultation and before you see a lawyer for consultations, ask the lawyer or the law firms how much does it cost. Just say, you know, how much the charge. Different law firms charge differently so you can get people who charge you maybe 300 to 500 or base on the lawyers’ experience they will charge according to the charge at rate for one hour but I always tell people, look usually if you have an idea on what you want to do for your business you probably don’t need more than 1 hour of lawyers’ time.Ā

    Ā

(09:02-09:38) What happened was that, my client, actually ask me to draft some terms, extended terms and conditions in which I advise and look, you gotta be entering not just one contractĀ  you can be entering into several contracts and of course like your own company’s master template so what happened is that, he closed a deal with one client, with one of his customers and his customer referred another customer to him. Now when he sent the extended terms and conditions contract over the first thing that this company said was I want to deal with you because I can see you do things properly.

    Ā

(09:40-10:05) You are credible because of the fact that your contract, I can see, is well drafted so my client then gave me feedback and said Hey, thanks so much. I know this contract you drafted like a few times over, a few months ago but because he was doing regular business and he was just entering and giving this contract to his clients to sign, this is the first time he had gotten a big deal, closed a big deal.

    Ā

(10:44-11:12) Get staffing contracts if you gonna have staff then get staffing contract that will be necessary. Also, we need to look at the nature of your business. Are you dealing with a lot of suppliers? Are you a distributor for some product? We need to see what are some contracts that you will need. Now obviously right from the right goal, you make sure that you have a business agreement drafted upĀ  between your partners whether shareholders, depending on what kind of company set up or corporate set up you have business entity that you have.

    Ā

(11:34-11:42) A lot of these disputes can be settled if you have agreed right from the start, in shareholders agreement, in business partnership’s agreement what you are looking for.

(12:46-13:22) If the parties are reasonable and they are able to talk it through then of course, we will get them to sign a settlement agreement because by that time there’s a follow up and you probably will not have had a proper business partnership at the start all you could have but not nothing has changed and parties want more or less so that’s where we would draft up a settlement agreementĀ  and show that the parties, they part nicely on whatever agreed terms they had and one of the key things is to make sure your settlement agreement that you keep things confidential.Ā

    Ā

(14:55-15:37) That’s always a possibility. We’ll see how that develops but of course my vision in my own personal life is really the same motto as my marriage certification program which is the tag line which is Successful Relationships, Successful lives. I think as you know litigation is usually a break down of relationship and they kind of agree with things so they have to fight it out in court. In our own lives it doesn’t have to be in a marriage situation just even in work or anywhere that you have people you cared about,...

(01:53-02:29) I’m a lawyer. I’m the director of Kalco Law, LOC. Basically I do commercial law but also IĀ  have marriage education business called Lifebuilders.com.sg . Feel free to go to the website to have a look at it. So basically I have been doing marriage certification on the site more of a volunteer basis but only reason is when I have managed to get the master trainer license so I could then be able to train others who are interested in teaching the course which is actually form University of Denver.

    Ā

(03:20-03:33) I thought I was gonna be one of those gang hole, mitigator or go out there, you know, confront the witnesses and say you’re lying or something like that. Well, of course, in actual practice is very different from what I imagine it to be.Ā

    Ā

(03:36-03:48) You do have your moments where you do cross examined the witnesses where you get them tongue tied and they are not able to answer the questions. If they say yes then damn then they say no they are also damned, you know you got them.Ā

    Ā

(03:53-04:25) Those kinds of moments I must say are not very often because I would say 90% of my cases don’t actually see the light of being caught. We prepare all the work until the day of trial and usually on the first day, more often there are things that are not settled so you would have prepared your 100 and 200 questions to cross examine and you never get to answer, ask any of these questions because you know, party settled and obviously as a lawyer , you would want to say cause and you want a more piece of possible outcome so a lot of times is not what you imagine it to be.

    Ā

The beginning is always the hardest.

    Ā

It was hard when Ms. Claire started. After she graduated, she chose to get married. Aside from reaching her goals, she has a family that needs to be attended. Good thing she has a very supportive husband who keeps on reminding her about her goals.

    Ā

(05:04-05:17) I would say, now 17 years in practice, so it wasn’t a very easy startĀ  because when I got married, I married before I actuallyĀ  got my professional qualifications.

    Ā

(05:30-06:04) Yes, it was awesome like a whirlwind romance. After I graduated from law school, I met the man of my life. I decided not to waste time, you know, let’s get married and have kids and so I did that before. Right after university degree and when I was about to launch my professional education that’s when I got married as well and then I also had a kid 1 year later so that’s how I started practice with 1 and a half year old daughter. Ā

    Ā

(06:27-06:58) I must say it was really very tough. The times that I thought I was losing my mind obviously, you know, and you wandered yourself whether it’s all worth it and it was really quite tough jangling, you know, all the different friends and this is why, in terms of husband and wife, communication is very important. My husband needed to understand when I was going to times of stress, when trial is coming up and a lot of times he had to take care of the babies, you know, while I’m working on my cases. Ā

    Ā

(07:03-07:34) My husband had to take my kids out while I am busy studying for my exams and so that was quite tough but I must say that having good communication in your spouse is very important and I think for me I’m really glad that I have a supportive husband who could see the bigger picture. In fact, many times I feel giving up I said I don’t think I don’t wanna practice anymore and he is always the one telling me, you should, you should. Make fool yourself with gifts that you have and I’m like, you know, you’re so cruel what kind of husband are you, Telling meĀ  to grow up there and suffer?Ā

    Ā

Speak up for those who cannot speak up.

    Ā

Lawyers are professionals that stands as a representative of their clients to speak up following the legalities of the law. Now, more lawyers are getting interested with marriage and not speaking with divorce. Ms. Claire shared one of her experiences as she had her first client that were planning to get separated but was fixed and still happy together with their marriage.

    Ā

(08:07-08:39) But I must say that indeed, legal practice has given me a lot of opportunities to meet a lot of people from all sorts of life so this is something I do appreciate. Now coming back to where we got involved with the marriage education is kind of strange because Oh, you're a lawyer. In fact, when my husband and I went to the States to get qualified, certified in the marriage preparation course, we were the only lawyers in the room out of 250 people there. They are all social workers or even pastors and ministers as well as psychiatrists.Ā

    Ā

(08:52-09:05) Everybody just gave us around of applause. Simply because you don’t hear of many lawyers actually really getting involved in the marriage work so I guess we see more and more lawyers who are interested.Ā

    Ā

(09:45-10:16) I would say that I had a moment of truth especially for the very first case I had. I actually saw the couple actually turning away from the decision to divorce. After going through like less than 3 months of the course that we have been doing and so that was really an eye opener because the couple are actually staying away more than a year. Can you imagine more than a year? Living two separate lives. In fact, when they came to see us, it was very awkward because they were like two completely strangers.

    Ā

(10:30-10:54)Ā  They move back together and they rebuild their lives and that’s like 10 years ago and now they are still happily married and they have 2 kids so I’m really very happy so that was like the moment of truth when thatĀ  happened. I told my husband and say Hey! Can you imagine we are doing this in our spare time. We should be doing more of this. Maybe this is really where our passion really lies and that’s where it started to grow.

    Ā

Being good is a powerful influence.

    Ā

Relax, slow down and enjoy life to the fullest. Smile to everyone as it spreads positive vibes and thoughts. Ms. Claire defined what is woman with influence. She said:

    Ā

(12:04-12:31) Well, obviously for me, a woman of influence is somebody who can help people think positively. I think that is something which, to me, is when you give a bit of love even just a random act of kindness you are already a woman of influence. Even when you give up your seat on the train for somebody you are already a woman of influence. It doesn’t take much. Sometimes smiles are enough.Ā

    Ā

(13:42-14:11) I think one of the obstacles I faced obviously is that you need to be like a garang, you know. People come to me and s...

  • 48: Alverna Cher, City Funeral Director and Will Planner: Turn Your Failures Into Fuel And Keep Your Dreams Burning

    FWEP00048 Alverna Cher

(02:00-02:08) I’m the first type planner in Singapore that helps my clients to write wills, arrange LPA and also advance funeral planning.Ā

    Ā

(02:11-02:27) In my opinion, writing a will is important for everyone. It’s not only for the rich, why? Because you want to leave down a clear instructions to our next kid. Clear instructions on how to handle our assets if there’s any orĀ

    Ā

02:36 Yeah, generally,Ā  peopleĀ  will but actually writing a will is not expensive with us. But if you choose to right the will with a lawyer then that will be costly. But in Singapore, we don’t need a lawyer to write a will. A will is actually very simple. No need for a computer.Ā

    Ā

(03:04-03:14) So in a will you only need to write for example, me, my name, my company, future in what percentage, that’s all.

    Ā

(03:49) Even if you there’s no will then people in a family complicates the whole issue and eventhough they want a claim for Ā

    Ā

(04:14-04:37) In Asia, especially Singapore people are too very taboo to talk about it. But actually it can cure many.Ā  In Singapore, I'm also the first one you know to do a pre plan enrol for insurance component. That means people they buy this pre plan funeral in advance and this money will help them to do the funeral plan.Ā

    Ā

(04:51-05:04) Expenses? So there are known other expenses that they need to pay. They also can choose what coffin they wanna sleep in. What kind of decoration on funeral.Ā

    Ā

(06:04) I actually involve people in their life Ā

    Ā

(07:09) We try to identify who needs help so the people who really needs helpĀ

    Ā

(07:39) Yes, being a mother, an entrepreneur it’s all about time management. A lot of thingsĀ  have to juggle at the same time so I used to change time for money. I foundĀ

    Ā

(08:28-08:46) For me, there was a time that I am a housewife so Majin left me. I’m only left with $400,000 then I have to shoulder everything so at the time we had this business, funeral business,Ā  so I ask myself because I am a housewife.

    Ā

(09:37) So I go around sharing with people how to write a will, how to plan . My next plan is actually going to an IT school to educate these young generations so they know what to do.

    Ā

(10:09-10:19) So basically my motto now is to continue to inspire more women to turn down their behavior to work to keep their flames burningĀ  so failure doesn’t stop them.

    Ā

    Key Takeaways:

    1.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Writing a will is important for everyone.

2.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Inspire more women to keep their flames burning because failure should not stop us.

3.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Manage everything in an organized way.

    4.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Be life ready with insurance.

5.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā We should start planning the future.

  • 47: Christina Chen Co-Founder of Scalized: Don't Be Afraid To Be Different And Dream Big to Achieve More

    FWEP00047 Christina Chen

    Ā

Today we have a really special guest of us. Her name is Christina Chen and she’s the co-founder of Scalized which is focusing on investments.

    Ā

    Technology alone is not enough.

    Ā

Scalized used technology to unite people on becoming entrepreneurs and they wanted this to help people globally. Ms. Christina shared further what does Scalized do.

    Ā

(01:01-01:24) Hello everybody! My name is Christina Chen. I was born in China, grew up in China and went to the UK. My background is in Computer Science and have been doing tech investments as a venture capitalist for 10 years and recently I come out to co found Scalized which is a new generation technology investment fund.

    Ā

(01:32-01:46) We actually focus a lot interest and capital in Tip top technology so robotics, artificial intelligence, cloud technology etc.Ā

    Ā

(01:50-02:19) We want to be the new generation investment fund. Funds that are really powerful for new generation entrepreneurs. What I mean by that is not only the new technologies that cutting edge technology, we are talking about the AI, artificial technology etc. but the new global wave of entrepreneurs who are looking at not only their home markets but looking at going abroad, going global, want to build even more global business.

    Ā

(02:25-03:04) So we have already a pretty broad venture partner network and what that means is really a network of advice and different key markets although we have courses in London. We have partners in Silicon Valley and San Francisco. We have partners in Asia, mostly in China, Beijing, Shanghai, Hongkong. We also have partners in Continental Europe in Geneva etc. so this is really the key word here is really global. I think for every entrepreneur who has seen the idea there’s a potential to have a global impact.Ā

    Ā

What makes you different, makes you amazing!

    Ā

Each and every one of us is different from the way we express ourselves and what we believe. Embrace these differences and be unique. Ms. Christina shared:

    Ā

(03:17-03:58) So I mean it’s been a long time. I’ve been doing an investment for 10 years. You start from nobody. You start from being nobody. I’m at rise and even today really almost giving my knowledge to the next generation and all those experiences. Being a female in very male dominance in finance industry is different, is challenging sometimes. It is just not the norm so it comes on a daily basis as how entrepreneurs interact with you, how other financial investors interact with you etc.

    Ā

(04:05-04:42) Although we work in a very cutting edge, new generation technology trend in the technology world, our industry the finance industry is quite old fashioned in some ways. And there’s certain, I guess traditions that in set in the expectations. To give a very memorable experience of mine is that I’ve been told about how I look and how I dress etc. not to wear black all the time and how I look different to, you know, I work in New York. I’ve also in a very white environment.Ā

    Ā

(04:47-04:59) I think one message out there for a lot of great women out there is do not be afraid to be different. In fact, you will be remembered because you’re different and do not try to fit in.Ā

    Ā

(05:30-06:01) You don’t look like us. You’re not dressing enough colors. You’re doing too many colors. You should look as so x,y,z someone else in the office who is more, you know, conformed to their standard black suit. Also, in fact, I was told that you shouldn’t look like a 3rd party who’s already made it and she’s you know, already at the top of the food chain so she can dress the way she is.Ā

    Ā

(06:03-06:22) I think I mean, this is one of the, it really hit me because that was really something very personal for me, obviously. Addressing something very personal directly at meĀ  but only then, I realized that you know what? I’m different.Ā

    Ā

Where and how did you start?

    Ā

It is not how you start. It is how you going to end it. Ms. Christina started from nowhere but she worked hard and met people who helped her to become who she is today.

    Ā

(06:31-07:02) I realize that in this stand age, you very often you come across doing business or in a social environment across somebody, peopleĀ  who have completed background of me because the word is so global, so international and the ability for you actually to accept differences. Actually, it can set you apart in the sense that it can make you more successful, can make you do more business, can do better business and actually doing good business for example.Ā

    Ā

(07:28-08:02) You know I start from nowhere. When are you going to the business in the finance business, in investments business you got no work which you see, you meet. You meet investors who have been in the industry for how many years. You meet investors who have invested in Google, in Facebook. You want to be one of them, you must also convince that entrepreneurs I can be and I will be and be part of the journey to become the next successful.

    Ā

(08:11-08:45) I’ve been to many networking events. I start form met a panel here. I start with very small panels with evening events, on Tuesday evenings with handful of entrepreneurs want to share that ideas and then the word grow and then you say stupid things, you make mistakes but you kind of learn fromĀ  that and then you get better and better and hopefully your stage gets bigger and bigger so that your ideas can reach out to more entrepreneurs.

    Ā

(08:55-09:48) I really want to empower entrepreneurs. Empower entrepreneurs who have a game changing ideaWe have in this technology world, there are a lot of game changers so just making life a little bit easier, a little bit better but looking for disruptions, looking for things that change the game, change the landscape and you know using artificial intelligence some of the latest technology will do that. And that takes time, patience, knowledge, money and I want to be the person who did the brand behind doing all of that so that we can actually make this world a better place.

    Ā

    What is your business advice?

    Ā

Ms. Christina shared some business advice and tools that she uses every day to organize everything.

    Ā

(10:04-10:43) No, actually, this is a very big thing for me is the mentor network, mentorships. It plays a huge part especially upcoming business person, whatever field you’re doing. Having a mentor is so important. I am still, myself, still looking for one. It does not have to be generally specific or the same gender or same origin but someone you’d look up to. I’m still looking for someone that I could look up to and willing to share their life experiences with me so far.Ā

    Ā

(10:55-12:23) Know you staff. Know your share so you definitely need to know whatever industry, sector, it doesn’t mean to be tact, whatever business you are in, you have to know, not only what you’re doing but how you position different from the others. Sustainable competitive advantage is very important for any business to be successful, that's one thing, that’s more of a general sort of business advice.Ā

    Ā

(13:16-13:25) Yes so I’m in Hongkong for less than 24 hours from...

  • 46: Lilian Leong, Former COO of 9GAG: Step Out Of Comfort Zone And Go Kick Some Ass (Just Do It!)

    FWEP00046 Lilian Leong

    Ā

Today we have a really special guest with us her name is Lilian Leong. She is the Chief Operating Officer of 9Gag.

    Ā

Experience is the teacher of all things.

    Ā

Ms. Lilian shared her work experiences before she got the offer of becoming the Chief Operating Officer of 9Gag.

    Ā

(01:00-01:03) Hi, I'm Lilian and I’m the Chief Operating Officer of 9Gag.

    Ā

(01:08-01:24) Well less than a year. I join 9Gag last year in August. After like 9 months conversation with the CEO, I took my time to really evaluate the opportunity and 9 months later I was on board, that was August last year.

    Ā

(01:35-01:45) But I would say that I’m old enough to be seen as having influence but you know, I could never find a way to quantify that.

    Ā

(01:52-02:14) In my first half of my career, I spent the last 13 years running a little bit at Hongkong , that was one of the largest agencies. That’s the biggest creative agency in Hongkong. And then I changed field kind of, within still communication industry and moved to the media agency side. I ran UM IPG Media Branch Hongkong.

    Ā

(02:32-02:55)Ā  Well that was pretty still. I will say quite similar because no matter if it’s advertising or media is kind of like still about communication. I talk to you, you talk to me that’s the rule of the game, I would say. So as a manager, of course, I have to understand people. I will say the biggest challenge for me back then was to understand culture.Ā

    Ā

Achieving gender equality is everyone’s responsibility.

    Ā

Men and women have different roles but they are both equal in opportunities, careers and rights. This gender equality was mentioned by Ms. Lilian.

    Ā

(03:37-04:34) Well this is my secret recipe, I would say. This is very important and obviously, this is neglected by lots of other people especially in general, I would say guys because men most of the time I think, the opposite gender will find understanding people, understanding about your feelings, is kind of like, demonstrates the weakness of a leader to listen, to ask questions.Ā  But I guess at the end you have to understand the motive of the people. I’m not a fortune teller. I can’t read the motive of a person simply by looking at them or reading their palms, I mean that’s not my expertise. So I guess at the end of the day it is about asking questions, asking why, what are your feelings. I would say that’s step 1, all from the other steps, the trust that I demand from the team.

    Ā

(04:49-05:12) If I have to communicate with anyone, I also have to open myself, right? Open up myself so when I talk to them about the fear I have or the sadness I have they will say, they kind of like, they don’t understand the thought like being seen as the older person in the street and they thought, I don’t have fear. I don’t have failure, I don’t have sadness.

    Ā

(05:14-05:37) The biggest challenge is that they will be scared when I show signs of vulnerability of myself. They will be shocked and in some way, they are kind of feeling intimidated, overwhelming. But after we build the trust then that is okay, I would say and that’s a very worthwhile to do for any of the female leader, I would say.Ā

    Ā

(05:49-06:32) Fortunately, in the past of my career, I have never seen cases like that, otherwise I won’t be sitting here. I guess it would be not objective enough in gender at the end of the day will be a hindrance at any person’s career growth. I remember 20 years ago, back then, I was in an interview, being interviewed by the Vice President of China somewhere in a bank raid of agency and the client was Japan to Pagcor and that boss ask me so Lilian, what do you feel if you have to serve a bunch of Japanese guys? Do you think you can handle it?Ā

    Ā

(06:37-06:47) And my answer was if you have that problem, we have a problem. I was hired at the end.Ā

    Ā

(06:57-7:29) Japanese tobacco was the client so that’s even more difficult for me. But I just ignore this kind of myth and by the way, I never see myself as a woman. I see myself as a professional. I was an executive. I was just doing my own job like at the end of the day it’s like I would say, it’sĀ  people capability more important?Ā

    Ā

How do you handle issues in your workplace?

    Ā

If they tell you that you can’t do something perhaps you should consider that they are only telling you what they can’t do. Never give a doubt as Ms. Lilian said.

    Ā

(8:27-8:40) I got harassed by some of the people from the very high up but I just kick their ass, I just said it’s not appropriate.Ā

    Ā

(8:48-9:13) I rejected them upfront and I said I won’t go and it’s not good. And then I walked away I really gave them a stepped face at the end of the day, it’s not what you say but it’s the gesture that you want to give. I gave that kind of tone like you know, mess up with me I’ll be kicking your ass that’s what I did and then they never came back with the same kind of approach.Ā

    Ā

(9:28-9:53) I didn’t worry, I didn’t worry at all. I just do what is my instinct, I have to protect myself just like an animal if I got attacked and then I’ll bite and I guess at the end of the day it is by basic instinct for any of the individuals male or female, older people or younger people to project themselves I think we have the right to do it.

    Ā

(10:29-10:38) I guess it’s like, believe in yourself and never overthink. I never give a doubt on what I want to do if I think this is the right move, I just do it.Ā

    Ā

Be eager to learn and improve.

    Ā

Be open to possibilities and changes and welcome new ideas. Stay open-minded and everything will be possible. Ms. Lilian shared:

    Ā

(11:11-11:54) First of all, when I changed from creative industry to media industry, creative agency people already thought I was a maniac, why would you want to work in the media agency and plan TV autro and digital. I thought data is very important is the essential for any of the marketing to build on so I took that chance and after 3 years and I thought you know what, I’m old enough and by chance I did have the opportunity to meet with Rey, that’s my existing CEO at the conference.

    Ā

(12:46-13:10) I only discover that I did let go a lot after I join, that I was officially the oldest employee in the company and I was the person who understands that the list, I don’t know how to deal with the loss of the tools, I don’t know how to google good enough, I don’t know how to handle google documents that well.Ā

    Ā

(13:34-13:51) Looking back is really a journey because it’s so different I wouldn’t have learned so much if I stay on the same company. and of course you know I will have my PA I will have my CFO I will have my HR to handle everything for me. But now, I’m the PA on my own and google is my best partner.Ā

    Ā

(14:54-15:24) The biggest learning in my career so far is never kinda you learn it all. I guess the biggest barrier for any individuals on earth, especiallyĀ  some of the people I’ve been, I done that I hate this kind, some people ask me are you proud? As your mom proud of you? I said no, I really don’t think so. I’m still learning and...

Competing in the Olympics of Music

Shian shared to us when she started performing which is a big part of her life. She also stated the feelings she felt doing her passion.Ā

Ā (3:17-3:39) - I’ve been performing since I was 7, so performing is part of my life. You know, if you love to do something it’s not work, it’s not like something you dread, something you actually love of course I have to say it was a little bit nervous this is broadcast live to people around the world. This is my first time going to Hollywood and to compete there with all the different nations.

Ā (03:53 -4:00) - Being in the new environment open place where everyone is so passionate about the performing artist it is amazing.
    Ā
    Ā Source of success

Her parents supports her throughout her career and she is very thankful for that, because her parents her inspiration.
    Ā
Ā (04:22 - 04:37) So much of my success is because my mom and my dad really push me and sometimes it’s really tough but they just get you through you know you have that one person that will always push you no matter what. That really help me.Ā

    Ā

(7:19-7:31) Parents your children are really really important. You have to give them time every single day just one hour to help them know their dreams. Cause if you don’t then the time is gonna past really really fast.Ā

    Having program for toddlersĀ

    Ā

    Helping Toddlers Become ProtƩgƩes.

Shian’s mom has a program which they entertain kids for an hour every single week to help them teach the children be musically inclined.

    Ā

(8:16-8:56) My parents have a project, my mom have this program for toddlers and this is the way that she trained us when we are on 3 to 4 to 5 it’s called EMF/EMG. This program helps toddlers become protĆ©gĆ©es. It teach you good rhythm teach you perfect pitch and it’s one hour a week. So we are trying to launch it out in Ebook form so we can access the children around the world. So that all the child, if they spend this one hour a week, every single week they will also learn how to be more musically inclined and also learn the strategies that my mom taught me.Ā

    Ā

(9:46-10:07) It’s like everyone can start but it’s the way how you finish. It’s really the way how you finish. You have to go all the way, finish it. There’s no point starting like this fitness program or that fitness program and never finishing. You can buy ten of them but if you never finish it it’s no good. You have to go all the way to the extreme till the end and then you’ll see the results.

    Ā

How do you manage your time?

Time management is very important specially if you’re in the industry of performing. 1 hour for each of her routines are enough for her to manage her time.

    Ā

(12:23-12:47) In the morning, you must always dedicate time to sit down and meditate, meditate first of all like, first I do my quiet time in the morning with God. I meditate what I’m gonna do today and then after that I start to exercise. Exercise releases endomorphins, it would trigger you to make you happyĀ

    Ā

    Love the life you have

Those who understand you will never judge you. Keep on working hard to reach your dreams. Once you appreciate the life you have today, tomorrow will be another day for you to step closer to your dreams.

    Ā

(15:28-16:09) A lot of times you may not fit in, you may think that you’re not good enough but I face a lot of cases especially in this industry, where you have toĀ  fit in this type in this image you know in these things. I want to say that you must live in this moment. You must love life, love yourself the way that you are right now. So that tomorrow you don’t live in the stressed life. Live in the kind of knowing this that you love yourself and every single day is a process. Every single day is one step closer to your journey, to your goal.
