FWEP00044 Mirela Sula
Ā
Today we have a very special guest. Her name is Mirela Sula, the founder of Global Woman Club. She has a platform that connects a lot of business women around the world.Ā
Ā
Our prime purpose in life is to help others.
Ā
Ms. Sula known her purpose in life from her younger years. And with her knowledge and experience, she used these to inspire women know their rights and how to be confident.
Ā
(01:27-01:46) Well Iām supposed to be based in London but in the last 3, 4 years Iāve been all over the world. Living my dream of meeting some inspirational woman. Finding their dreams and connections on how we can serve to the world with what we do.Ā
Ā
(02:03-02:55) Well the same as you do, because, you know, when youāre living your purpose and when youāre thinking and so loyal to that purpose then everything else will just fall into its places.Ā Of course, it started with the global magazine because that is my background. Iāve been working in the media for a long time and my passion, of course, worked overtime to help and support women because I came from a culture that women didnāt have a strong voice and they didnāt have that power to express themselves, that's why I always had this passion inside me that everything that I accumulate inside myself, knowledge, experience, networking opportunities to turn it into something that helps others as well.Ā
Ā
(04:04-04:34) Well, since we are here now in Singapore with rich women and Robert Kiyosaki, definitely that book has changed in ruling my life but the lives of many women who wanted to become financially independent that was a big thing. I have studied one of their Masters degree and PhD and everything it takes like the culture and of course, family and everything that we embrace while we are growing up in that culture.Ā
Ā
Make goals, dream big and live with passion.
Ā
Change is painful but it is more painful staying stuck somewhere that you donāt belong. Ms. Sula shared how she deals with women who are currently stuck and unhappy with their present lives.
Ā
(05:32-05:48) Yeah, I keep going. Iām just living the big passion that I have inside me, the big dream. And then I donāt need to go anywhere. Things that I want, they come.Ā
Ā
(06:17-06:45) Oh thatās very interesting! When I meet women the day that they know they are stuck and they are looking for a new direction in life and they say Okay, letās find where you are because that's a very important thing to do the assessment where you are because you donāt know where you are going and before you find out where are you located. You do an assessment of the situation that you are at that moment.Ā
Ā
(06:58-07:33) To see if you are still sleeping or you are awakening up slowly. Itās really hard to see that some women they never even get to the awakening up momentum. So until you come to that momentum, no matter how clever you are and how much knowledge you have inside if you are not using that knowledge, if you are not awakened person you just go around then look for different directions but you will not get what you really deserve. So thatās why number 1 is toĀ find you where you are and to find out if you are still sleeping or awakened.Ā
Ā
(08:03-08:33) I always say, look, if you are not happy where you are then, you move because youāre not a tree. Thatās why itās very important to start moving and to be honest, nothing changes until something moves and people keep asking themselves why my life is not changing? Because youāre not moving and if you want something that you never had, you have to do something that you never had done before so thatās why I encourage women first of all, to wake up then to start moving.
Ā
Learn how to cope because there will really be dark days in our lives.
Ā
All of us will have bad times, dark days and dark momentum but these dark days will make us stronger. Some of the dark days of Ms. Sula was conquering depression that she had before.
Ā
(09:09-09:41) Well, thatās very interesting because sometimes you have to reach dark zone, dark momentum and seek for solutions before you see the light. Because of course, we have seen a lot of big names and big personalities now that they care a lot about the challenges that they had in life and difficulties and as a psychologist, I have seen a lot of people come to therapy looking for answers and for solutions after they have flashed.
Ā
(09:56-10:34)Ā The big first crashed is when I lost my first child and I went to severe deep depression. At that time, in our culture, psychology was quite a new field, nobody new about depression or stress . Then I gaveĀ to my son and you know, postpartum depression nailed and nobody could help me and that was the biggest dark zone that I experience in my life and I had to choices to do, to just give up my life or just get out of the dark zone.Ā
Ā
(12:01-12:26) Well, at that time, was not possible because nobody could help in this situation because as I said psychologyĀ is rare at that time under communist regime and the word depression didnāt exist at the vocabulary. People could go through this difficult issues, science term of issues and never knew what is that about.Ā
Ā
(13:52-14:29) I had a private practice in helping people in psychotherapy for quite a long time and I started big movement on helping women empower themselves for me, that was another discovery that if you want to empower yourself, first you have to build your confidence, the confidence of the internal work and that led me to new projects on empowering people around me but especially women where they were always suppress and under pressure and suffering inside.
Ā
Media can be useful to share impact to people.
Ā
With Ms. Sulaās knowledge and experience together with the media, she was able to expand their club and it continued inspiring women to move if they are unhappy and be confident.Ā
Ā
(14:49-14:59) Now, we have access to more information as I said at that time it was no internet, no computer, nothing you could getĀ this information anywhere thatās why we're like in an isolation.Ā
Ā
(15:08-15:25) Great things have changed the new paradigm has proved that humans have the ability to change themselves to re-brain themselves to re-create themselves and the same I see as an opportunity for women.Ā
Ā
(16:38-17:10) So I first started working as a trainer of domestic violence in London one of the biggest organizations in LondonĀ and then while working and conducting my PhD research about domestic violence, I realize that two big things why women really suffer on domestic violence is number 1, confidence and number 2 financial dependency and I said how do I turn this into something that, itās my passion and I wanna turn into business.Ā
Ā
(17:43-18:08) Then I came up with this idea of building a new platform. First, interviewing them and finding out their issues, their problems, their concerns, challenges, what are the main problems and then once I learned that if you find the problem then you are in business because you find the solution and thatās it
Ā
(18:34-19:09) The quest...
FWEP00043 Charis Rooda
Ā
Today we have a very special guest. Her name is Charis Rooda. The owner and organizer of Hong Kong's most popular web conference, Webconf.asia! Webconf.asia is a non-profit conference for people who build websites, with the goal of bringing together and inspiring the web community in Asia.
Ā
Ā
Conference she organized
It may be hard on the beginning but success will come if you donāt give up. When you love what youāre doing the hardship doesnāt matter anymore because you know you can do it.
Ā
(1:38-2:02) I used to organize a conference in Amsterdam and when I came here I wanted to do the same but it takes you like a few years to kinda find out how and look for a community works and I looked around and I organize few meet-ups and I decided Iām just gonna do it, and I started little or less than a year ago and my conference was a month ago or so and it went really well.Ā
Ā
(2:11-2:20) As a sponsor we had Microsoft, we had Mozilla we had Fastly, IPGP there are quite a lot of good sponsors.Ā
Ā
How you get started?
Everything is impossible if you believe in yourself. Always think of plans. Don't be afraid to start without having anything and learn from your experiences.
Ā
(2:35-2:40) I think the main thing is you need to meet a lot of people. I went to a lot of meet-ups coming to concerts where there are a lot of people.
Ā
(2:50-3:00) I need to steal a lot of people about your idea and you tell them that you have really big plans and you kinda hope that they wanna join you on that.
Ā
(3:04-3:26) I just really really wanted it. And I think you just start or I just really want to make this happen. I was kinda building websites is really cool but it doesnāt satisfy as much as learning in events. You do research and you just start.
Ā
(3:43-3:54) I started with getting my venue and it was a very big struggle because I didnāt have a good network to find an event.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
(4:02-4:14)Ā You just start to invite people and slowly, slowly bit by bit itās coming together and then youāre like awake for many nights because youāre really afraid that you wonāt sell any tickets and so you do a lot of promos and then tickets start selling.
Ā
How do you manage your fear?
The best way to beat problems is to face and work on them. Making yourself busy is a good way on how to overcome struggles. Don't let them distract you from your dreams.
Ā
(4:36-4:52) I think the best way to kind of reduce my fear is to work on it cause when youāre busy trying to sell those tickets youāre not really afraid you wonāt sell them. So I was just making a lot of hours to make sure that I sold them.
Ā
(4:57-5:12) Talk to a lot of people. I think, still, at least, Hong Kong is still really offline so I talked to a lot of people told them it is going to be really good. Like, in the end, I just told people itās going to be really good, just buy your tickets.
Ā
(5:52-6:07) When you do something like that just ask people to help you because it might be in the beginning you might not wanna do that because people love to help and as soon as you start to reach out to people.Ā
How do you realized that people love to help?
(6:46-7:02) I think once kinda people start offering it to you then you think like I can just do it like there are lot of stuff you can actually just do but itās doesnāt feel like youāre just too shy to do that. You shouldnāt be.
Ā
What is a woman of influence for you?
As a woman, you are expected to have goals in life. Through that expectation, every woman becomes strong and motivated in achieving their passion.Ā
Ā
(8:38-8:42) I kinda like it when women do stuff their own way.
Ā
(9:17-9:23) I think always like, starting is the most difficult part and once itās running itās gonna be fine.Ā
Ā
(9:41-9:57) I find it like a way not to worry about stuff, so if Iām just really worried about the stuff I just make a list of that stuff down, Iād rather just work on it than worry.
Ā
(10:22-10:51) In Amsterdam, Iām kinda got pulled into an organization that was organizing events and in the first year you just donāt know what youāre doing, to everybody I kinda talk whoās doing event, everybody says āI have no idea what Iām doing. Because she just donāt know and after 2 or 3 years she kinda sees should have pattern and thatās why I learned. I also knew when I did the last event in Amsterdam I knew next start would be running my own event I just really paid good attention.Ā
Ā
What advice can you give to female entrepreneurs?
Failure doesn't mean that you're not good enough, keep trying and trying to achieve success. No matter how long it is but never stop doing what can make you happy.
Ā
(11:13-11:35) Just start, donāt be afraid that youāre not able to do it. Because everybody just started zero and the thing is also most of the time the first stuff you do wonāt be the good but thatās fun. Because you do another round and then another round and just try to get involved and somehow learn a lot and just step out and do it on your own.Ā

FWEP00042 Mark Yuzuik
Ā
In this episode, we will talk about what a difference one person can make! Each one can make a difference and together we can make a change. Mr. Mark Yuzuik shared how he started and fulfilled he is on helping others.
Ā
(01:23-01:48) Well, Iāve been doing shows for almost 30 years and all over 10,000 shows and I thought you know if we can do a show and help people have fun. Can we really help someone to get to the next level with these blocks? And if people have blocks in life, how we get rid of these blocks? So understanding the patterns of people that they run every day, you can influence your own mind to get rid of the blocks.
Ā
(02:48-03:05) What made me interested is realizing that I could take it to the next level. If somebody is stuck and you know that the reason youāre stuck in one little thing and you could help them. Imagine what you can do with the masses out there and to me, I get more fulfillment out of helping somebody that has been stuck for years because they donāt know why.Ā
Ā
(04:01-04:19) One person makes a difference. Think about how rewarding that is versus making excuses why I canāt do that. If you tell yourself you canāt do that then why youāre doing that. Is it to connect and be humble to the person or are you telling something you canāt because you love the person and you want them to grow?
Ā
(04:31-04-55) They donāt believe that they can do it. Secondly, they listen to other people. They get other peopleās limitations and beliefs. Thatās must be like this! And they are influenced by the media and TV and everything else out there. They listen to negative programming itās called TV programming. They listen to that and guess what? They adopt that same belief and so they wake up questioning What if I can do it?Ā
Ā
We grow when we face challenges.
Ā
Challenges make life interesting and overcoming it makes life more meaningful. Mr. Mark shared some life advice on how we face these challenges on a daily basis.
Ā
(05:28-05:45) Everybody goes to challenges where we have questions on ourselves. Am I really able to do this or not? What would make me a good leader? You just have to get up to and face your fear and just know that itās not about you. If we all focus on how we going to feel, if we failed or succeed then weāre not suing anybody.Ā
Ā
(06:18-06:30) It wasnāt a challenge for me, it was a desire for me to succeed. I focused on what I want, why I want to succeed. Now donāt let anybody tell me I canāt do it. In fact, is the more they told me I canāt do it, the more motivated I was.
Ā
(07:01-07:26) She is a model and also a speaker. She speaks to womenās groups all over just got back from Mexico and we met 11 years ago at a bookshelf, a large bookshelf. We were promoting a childrenāsā book on respect, responsibility, everybody has value. She was in the book next to me.
Ā
Mutual understanding is the main backbone of every happy relationship.
Ā
Mr. Mark and his wife is a normal couple that faces challenges that together they conquer. They understand that both of them are different and they understand these differences.
Ā
(08:09-08:34) We donāt blame each other for anything. We understand that people are different. And if you can respect somebody, understand why they are feeling what they are feeling, then it doesnāt have to be the end of you if you could understand them. And youāre all about āHow can I serve this personā. At that point, youāre not focused on what you are getting, youāre appreciating what you have.Ā
Ā
(09:52-10:07) She also wants me to be happy and we do things for each other not because we are expecting but because we choose to, we want to and if it is expected then what are you doing? This is a business transaction relationship. Well, if I give you this then you give me that is a transaction.Ā
Ā
(10:35-10:55) Women are the most powerful human beings and I believe men are strong. Because when a woman can stand behind a man and support him to be the man who is going to provide for her, a man feels alive and a woman feels like the queen that she should really is. I think we should worship every woman out there and be grateful that they are in our lives.Ā
Ā
(12:12-12:22) Have variety. Do things that are unexpected. What would you do for so many when you first met, anything. Why would that slow down? Why would you not continue to surprise and do things for her?
Ā
If you really want something, you will always find a way.
Ā
If itās important to you, you make it into your actions to achieve what you really want. And if it fails, you get up and move forward. Mr. Mark shared:
Ā
(13:21-13:46) Number one, if you thought what you really wanted and not what your getting but your giving then you start moving. If you do something that doesnāt work, if it fails then people will judge you then what we do? We talk ourselves out of it and we think Oh, my God! So what you do is to go on and be busy. Instead of being productive, youāre busy.
Ā
(14:03-14:19) We learn from each other and I think when we learn from each other, you get to grow and for one thing, how do you break that mind, that mind is condition. You know what people would ask me, itās a condition. They have to condition themselves to procrastinate just like you can tell yourself in action.
Ā
It takes change to make a change.
Ā
Progress is impossible without a change. Always remember that you are doing what you are doing right now because it would make your life better. Mr. Mark mentioned on how not to get stuck on the current life that you have.
Ā
(15:05-15:24) Everybody is different. Itās who you hanging out with. Sometimes you think your family is your best coach. You want to find a good coach? Find somebody who experienced it because experience from there, you could teach. From knowledge without experience, is an opinion.Ā
Ā
(15:52-16:07) When you have enough reasons why you want something other than yourself that point you will move forward. Have you ever wanted something so bad in your life and you think about how you going to get it and youāre determined to get it? Who has it? Everybody. They donāt think about what they have to do, they think about the results.
Ā
(17:07-17:25) I think that it always changes based on the needs that we have. Because if we are financially independent and we are not free, how good is it?Ā But if we are free from financial independence, where we at?Ā If we feel fabulous, thatās great. We going to keep feeling that way, what are we going to do with that feeling? So I think all three words work together.
Ā
(18:37-18:54) You donāt think about it. When you have the thought, you react right away and when you could react, you break it and you start creating a new pattern that one thing you like thatās been holding. Nobody wants to procrastinate, nobody wants that fear, that we do, based on people that will judge us.Ā
Ā
(20:45-21:08) You have the ability to make a change in a moment. You have a lifetime to stay stuck and thatās not who you are. If you donāt like where you are, you donāt feel like your body, when you...
FWEP00041 Suzanne Nguyen
Ā
Having a positive influence on other peopleās lives is a blessing.
Ā
Ms. Suzanne used Meerkat as her social platform to share her thoughts, insights and share a good influence on her growing followers. Sheās not used to be called an influencer but she realized that many already know her.
Ā
(00:57-01:05)Ā Hi, Iām Suzanne Nguyen under the String story. String means I connect to people, time, place and innovation together.
Ā
(01:08-01:20) My personal branding String story probably about 6 years but then I discovered a video launching on yourself. I was on me Meerkat about two and a half years ago and since then my people online have grown exponentially.Ā
Ā
(02:06-02:25) By accident because Iām just a verbal communicator. I donāt consider myself as an influencer. People call me an influencer and at the end of the day, I just wanna tell, I wanna chit chat about the future. I talk to smart people because I find if I talk to smart people, Iāll learn. I become a better person and understand what the future looks like.Ā
Ā
(02:42-02:58) They know you but you donāt know them. Thatās aĀ glam understanding that you become internet famous. And that happened to me when I was walking on the streets of San Francisco for the very first time. Walking down Marquetry and a person messaged me on Instagram.Ā
Ā
Media-friendly content has influence.
Ā
Ms. Suzanne was not really expecting that her branding will get attention to the netizens. She shared her activities as she traveled to some countries.
Ā
(03:19-03:39) A person who has self-awareness. A woman has like understanding of the power of feminity or the fabulousness like you said. And when they understand that they have like a strong sparkle inside them like I want women that sparkles like you sparkle when youāre in camera.
Ā
(04:02-04:33) I think what IĀ did, what people do they have too many options on not to focus enough. But when you realize that you have organized fried chickens parties because thatās part of my branding. When I was in America I did like mini virtue and I went to Ape and cities and organized every city that I went to had like fried chicken parties like individuals or people.
Ā
(05:54-06:17) I think itās because I realized at the end of the day when we think about it, distribute down to the subjective call of things. I have a format branding and you would take it as well. Your brand equals your vision, your values plus your visuals like has to be strong visuals and your voice. And when you all have these 4 Vās in place then you have a brand.
Ā
The most beautiful accessory is confidence.
Ā
Be yourself. Do not be intimidated by other peopleās opinions. Just be confident and do amazing things. Ms. Suzanne was asked why she is confident enough to share whatās on her mind.
Ā
(06:38-06:56) People always ask me, how do you become confident in front of the camera. I didnāt realize that I have a surely strong story. But people kept asking me more questions so I think what you need to realize like you have your own perspective of things. People really wanna know your points about things.Ā
Ā
(07:09-07:42) Practice makes perfect. Originally I didnāt like my face as well. Actually, when people call me cute I get angry. Your face and your voice is an advantage. No one has your voice, no one has your perspective and your thinking. No one has your face. Just realize that your story has value, your voice has value and you start to believe in yourself.
Ā
(08:13-08:26) The Start-up show is one of my clients. Iāve been able to travel around the world as a freelance because a lot of people want valuable content so that the Startup show is one of my clients that pays me on a retainer basis to create valuable content.Ā
Ā
A brand is worth it if it connects to the people in a relevant way.
Ā
We can never deny that social media brought power to each individual to share opinions, ideas and even experiences that inspire other people. Ms. Suzanne defined what is influencing her.
Ā
(09:12-09:25) I donāt think influence is a key to inspire people to do an action. You can inspire one person to realize that they can make a difference and network are important for me because I like connecting people.Ā
Ā
(10:13-10:36) Find your passion. If you could do it every day that would inspire you to wake up and feel joy then thatās already a win for you. If you could do something like that every day just finds that passion and by finding that passion and monetize. If you know how to monetize your passion, you become successful before you even realize it.
Ā
(11:30-11:38) I think when I started treating myself like a product. When youāre like a brand, and there are two ways of doing brands.Ā
Ā
You get what you worked hard.
Ms. Suzanne shared her life advice and money matters that will help us to be who we wanted to be.
Ā
(14:13-14:25) We all have an emotional relationship with money. Asking for money is something a lot of people do and know how to do it. But thatās a step of an entrepreneur right? Asking for money, being paid for money, paying on time,Ā looking up paying full.Ā
Ā
(15:05-15:16) Work hard and then like, sleep a lot after work. Because I have so much information so I need time so that my brain will digest.Ā

FWEP00040 Mada Seghete
Ā
How was Madaās journey?
Ā
They have failed on their previous projects but not giving up is the key to reach success. They connected their project to a video game, where you can have not only one life but seeing a poster in their office with only one heart that made them work differently according to Mada.
Ā
Today we have a really special guest and she is Mada Seghete and sheās the co-founder of Branch. Branch powers deep linking and mobile attribution for 35,000+ of the most advanced apps in the world.
Ā
(1:56-2:18)Ā We really wanted to build something and one of the most important things that you can build as start-up founder is a team, and we realized that we were very different as co-founders and have very complementary skillsĀ so we decided to stay together and keep trying. So we keep failing and trying out new things and Branch was gonna be the last one.
Ā
(3:07-3:10) I spend a lot more time eventualizing than my co-founders do.
Ā
(3:18-3:51) I run the marketing team so I travel a lot and speak about branch. The way I built influence is really through just getting to know things really in depth and writing about it, trying to speak about it things and finding areas so I can become an expert in telling others about it. So when I write articles I try to never write things that are superficialĀ by going depths of certain areas and thatās kind of trying to become a thought leader in the mobile world.
Ā
(3:58-4:27) Instead of learning about everything by a little bit about this and a little bit about that I try to pick areas, for example, I do a lot of talks on virality and referrals and so I went and I research a lotĀ and I know a lot on how to make something viral. So instead of going and knowing everything about how to promote your app, I donāt know letās say as much as paid advertising but I know a lot about organic so I picked one area and I just learned so much about it versus trying to be generous.Ā Ā Ā
Ā
How do you lead?
Being part of the team and as a leader is not just an easy task, sheās also taking part of the pieces and doing some of the ground work.Ā
Ā
(4:31-4:53) Everyone has different leadership styles minus based on leading by example so I think itās if thereās things that no one else can do I try to take more on my teammates and I do my best to find ways than I can show people that I can work as hard and harder than them.Ā
Ā
What resources and tools you use to grow your start-up?
(5:40-6:04) So I lead the marketing team, so one of the ways we grew awareness of branch is by building these communities around the world for the mobile growth communities and we have meet-ups in 55 cities around the world about 25 thousand people have come to our events. There has been like community has been one of the tools, we have content marketing has been amazing for us, we write a lot so we become experts in different areas.
Ā
How do you grow your community?
According to Mada, think of the community first. Think of the needs of the community and not your needs, why are they there and what are they trying to get out of it?Ā
Ā
(7:14-7:53) You put really good content. So we have a recipe how to do successful meet-ups we bring really interesting people to talk we convince them by, once you do a big events you show people how Iāve done this big event come and check it out and itās easier to convince people to come and once youāve done it with event people will come back and they'll tell their friends about it so itās really about focusing on the quality and putting the community first so not trying to oversell and we donāt talk too much about branch itās all about the need of the community and not about our needs.
Ā
(8:32-8:40) To really understand what is the purpose of your community and what is in need you are trying to solve?
Ā
(8:50-9:05) We knew that thatās what they were looking for so we make sure that we always bring them quality advice but every community is different. So making sure you understand their actual need do not what your vision is.
Ā
(9:18-9:43) Just try it out, if you fail the first time itās okay. Just keep building. Donāt be afraid to fail if you see people that want your product be humble donāt think that you know better than your customers and make sure that if you feel that the market is telling you that your ideas not quiteĀ right, Donāt be afraid to completely quit and start something new.Ā
Ā
How do you cope with emotions of failure?
Let go of something that is not working and if you fail, accept it. Start doing something new and learn from your failure.Ā
Ā (10:13-10:31) Very hard, Iāll be honest, I donāt think I could be able to give up my co-founder Alex our CEO, was a lot better than me at saying no this is not working and one of my biggest learning from working with him has been to be able to let go of projects. So Iām a lot better now.Ā
Ā
(10:46-10:53) Itās probably the biggest advice I have to every entrepreneur. Donāt get too attached to an idea be okay admitting that itās failing and start something new.
Ā
(11:06-) Failure is just a step in the best of success.Ā

FWEP00039 Karena Belin
Ā
It is better to lift up people than look at them.
Ā
We rise by lifting other people thatās what WHub do for start-ups. They provide resources for those who need and want it. Ms. Karena explained further what WHub does.
Ā
(01:05-01:20) Iām Karena Belin. Iām the co-founder of WHub. We are a community that has the passion to help start-ups grow and scale their business and therefore, you need resources so thatās what we do. We connected to the resources you need to grow and scale your business.Ā
Ā
(01:25-01:53) Well actually, itās the typical story. There is a problem that you started feeling really passionate about. We, my co-founder and me, had friends that were entrepreneurs and they were always desperately looking for talent. Now, if you look back at the year 2013, the Hongkong start-up system and ecosystem was relatively small and self centered and it was really lacking for somebody to open it up, drive feasibility and help them recruit so thatās why we came in.
Ā
(02:08-02:30) We cover over 1500 start-ups and more likely, more than half of the ecosystem here in Hongkong. The total communityĀ is over 10,000 because it includes passionate talent,Ā it includes the investors, acceleration and co-working, programs and spaces and hopefully grow more and more and also get people from outside Hongkong interested.Ā
Ā
(02:38-02:54) Yeah, exactly! The Hongkong government just recently did a study and set their 1926 start-ups here in Hongkong and there are probably more than 2000 even. But yeah, I think we can confidently say that we cover more than half of the ecosystem probably around two-thirds.
Ā
Outstanding people has an absolute mission.
Ā
WHub has a mission and passion to help start-ups on becoming a successful entrepreneur. This is what Ms. Karena elaborated.
Ā
(03:07-03:31) Well, I donāt know what makes us amazing. Our mission and passion is our tagline Start up Passion and the W comes actually from Why, the W of WHub. We are big fans of Simon Sinek which is gold and circle in his talk about Starting with Why. We believe that the most important asset an entrepreneur has is passion, his mission and his team.
Ā
(03:51-04:12) Iām originally from Germany. My better half is probably definitely French because my husband and my co-founder are both French and I studied in Germany and in France then traveled to Asia already over 10 years ago. Because I lived 7 years in Japan and 6 years in Hongkong now. I totally fell in love with Asia.
Ā
(04:22-04:48) In a day to day context, I do speak English, German and French. I do understand a little bit of Italian and I do have to admit I really tried to learn Japanese and Chinese and probably get some survival sentences out there but I think in my second life, I would really love to learn more Asian languages.Ā
Be the kind of woman that you wanted to be.
Ā
Define your goal, do the action and make it happen. Everyone is powerful and can make a change whether youāre a man or woman. Ms. Karena shared her insights as a female entrepreneur.
Ā
(05:10-05:31) One of my challenges is what to answer in your question about, what is difficult in being a female entrepreneur. I donāt really feel or regard myself as a female entrepreneur. I just happened to have a lot of passion and energy in trying to make change happen. I am a womanĀ at the same time so that makes me qualified to be a female entrepreneur.Ā
Ā
(05:45-05:59) I would love too! I mean, we say that we believe in the power of meaningful connection and I think thatās totally true of connecting different ecosystems with each other because they are obviously complementary from the opportunities, from the promise that are people solving, and from the resources.Ā
Ā
(06:33-06:56) Well the advice again is probably gender neutral. First of all, just go out and try. Follow your passion. Donāt let you get held back by your own paradigms and fears. Second thing is something I would love to quote from my co-founder, Karen, who once came up and said , we should listen to everyone but make up our own mind
Ā
Women are also determined to rise.
Ā
WHub aims to be known worldwide and it is possible having women behind that. Ms. Karena shared their vision for WHub.
Ā
(07:21-07:41) Ideally, I would love to see WHub making an impact to start-ups around the world. Itās really gonna help start-ups to make meaningful connections to the right people, at the right time, to the right resources. We have recently seen that there are more and more corporates that are interested, genuinely finding ways to collaborate and push agendas forward.Ā
Ā
(08:29-08:49) We recently expanded our connections to make sure that our start-ups can connect and meet with investors because obviously talent is one resource you need. You first have to have, a somehow complete team in placed to the built and execute on the prototype. Start fundraising but money is the other big part that you need in compounded time.
Ā
(09:03-09:15) One of the things is obviously and thatās coming back to what we do is we showcase the ecosystem creating that visibility and know how to educate about the opportunities that are here so that actually, they come to you rather than having you reach out to them.Ā
Ā
(09:16-09:23) And then the other thing is continuously driving these opportunities also in offline events and in strategic partnerships.Ā
Ā
(09:56-10:11) So the visibility to WHub , I would say, is to know about the ecosystem. Itās the fundamental pillar of the business model in solving the problem. So again when we started in 2013, I think one of the things that ecosystem was lacking somebody driving the visibility.Ā
Ā
(10:34-10:53) One part of it gonna depend where you are based and your context. But Hongkong is relatively small so you can definitely leverage offline tools. You donāt have to hack only online. At the end of the day, I still believe we are all humans and with human touch and connection is important.

FWEP00034 Laura Andersen
Ā
Are women capable in doing business?
Being in the industry of business requires a lot of quality to be able to be enough. Laura wanted to share to the world that every woman can do amazing things and has a huge opportunity in the business world.
Ā
(2:47- 3:16) Honestly, more than half of Shopify merchants are women, and I will say that thereās a very small percentage of women who are actually inspiring other women to be entrepreneurs and so we recognized that thereās a need for more women partners, we need more women in the business, creating campaigns for women, marketed to women and we recognized that thereās a huge business opportunity there.Ā
Ā
(4:11-4:32) This is my dream job, and the reason this my dream job is I know some incredible women who are just capable of so many amazing things and theyāre not only capable but theyāre accomplishing amazing things. Being from a background affiliate marketing unfortunately, the large majority are men.Ā
Ā
(5:05-5:22) I want more women to have the freedom to choose how they spend their career , what they do for a living. I want women to be in choice of how they earn money, what business is they wanna pursue and you know, have the tools available to them to make that happen.Ā
Ā
Shopifyās partnership with Soul Rich Woman
Laura shared to us how happy they are in the partnership with Soul Rich Woman. She stated that she was so excited about it because she knows that both partners can provide a stronger community together.
Ā
(5:39-6:20) So weāre really excited to say that we have recently partnered with Soul Rich Woman. We are so excited about this partnership, for a number of reasons but one in particular is that itās a really strong community of women within South East Asia all over Asia and all over the world but being able to actually partner with amazing networks of people such as Soul Rich Woman is a huge opportunity for Shopify and personally I just represents such an incredible shift in our industry to be able to create meaningful new campaigns for the world.Ā
Ā
(7:11-7:21) You learn so much, you learn things that you donāt even plan to learn. And if you have that hunger and that curiosity to always want to learn from the people around you just get better all the time.Ā
Ā
What is Shopify and itās purpose?
Laura shared the use of shopify and how to do it. She stated It was developed and it was built to help individuals get into commerce and do that and have that power in their own hands.Ā
Ā
Ā
(9:01-9:22) Itās a platform that enables entrepreneurs to sell. So I compare it to setting up your facebook profile. So easy, you input your details, it prompts you, what you want your profile to look like but then youāre actually the one who creates what you post, what you publish, what you share with the world.Ā
Ā
Key Takeaways:
1.Ā Ā Every women has a good opportunity in the business
2.Ā Ā Women are valued
3.Ā Ā Everyday is a learning experience
4.Ā Ā No one is perfect
5.Ā Ā We can do amazing things in life

FWEP00038 Arimbi Nimpuno
Ā
Today we have a special guest. Her name is Chef Arimbi Nimpuno. She is a celebrity chef in Jakarta, Indonesia, a very well-known one. And she also serve on this amazing community with the skills as emcee, host of this event organized by Loaf Singapore.Ā
Ā
Working together is SUCCESS.
Ā
Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. Ms. Arimbi and her team shared that out from their different skills and ideas, they work as one.
Ā
(02:16-02:39) My name is Arimbi. I am a mother of four and I am a chef. I have been a professional chef since 2009. I am with these guys and they are a lot of fun to be with. They are very very creative and we work everything up until the last minute.Ā
Ā
(02:54-03:26) Itās been a very very amazing experience. Each project has its own challenges and stuff but this one I think is the most challenging as we work in a boost track kind of thing. It kinda gave us a new experience, new views, a new way of handling things that plays an important role for us to grow our positive capability and skill.
Ā
(03:48-04:16) I think the most important thing is to have a good sense of humor and to have a very good understanding of each other because weāve known each other for quite a while now. I think the most important thing is to be grateful for everything that weāre learning. Every obstacle, every challenge there we just take it āOkay, letās just do this. What do you think?ā.
Ā
We grow when we face challenges.
Ā
We must strive for never-ending improvement and though life gives us a lot of challenges that we face in our everyday lives, we should take it positively. Kevin, as being the youngest chef in the year 2010 mentioned:
Ā
(04:20-04:43) But for me, as Gupta said, this is very challenging but itās the most fun cooking experience ever because we work in a quite restricted environment but a traditional one and it feels like home. This is so nice because we are able to cook just about traditional innovation food but some twisted experience.Ā
Ā
(04:59-05:14) I was one of the 1st seasons of Masterchef Indonesia in 2010. And at that time I was also the youngest in Asia actually. Because in Asia itās just only India and Indonesia. Ā
Ā
(05:41-06:26) For us, perhaps is the ice cream because we need to make the ice cream without an ice cream machine. We need to figure out the way to freeze the ice cream basil. We drove to Singapore to find dry ice suppliers. But I think every dish that we made have their own challenges because we are using the local ingredients, local equipment so I think, yes, it was very fun.Ā
Ā
(06:40-06:59) We are always looking for challenges for sure. I mean, me and Prima, has been working together in this ice cream thingy about 4 years and we are always open for a chance for us to grow our skill and capacity.Ā
Ā
Food, as our common ground.
Ā
Good food brings us into a good mood. Ms. Arimbi, together with her team, sliced their favorite food.
Ā
(07:23-07:48) I like to eat everything basically. In terms of favorite food, in the earlier stages of my career, I went for the Indonesian style you know. I went for the really out of the box food but now I think, me personally, I will go at grass food. I like to taste and experience the real taste of the ingredients itself.Ā
Ā
(07:56-08:15) For me, I like everything organic because organic is really good. It is expensive but at the end of the day, you gonna admit that organic taste more organic.
Ā
(08:21-09:04) Mine will be maybe Indonesian food. We have different varieties of tropical fruits and ingredients. Maybe Padang food, all of Indonesia but for me, anything that is edible. I like everything that is out of the box. The thing is that quite makes me WOW.Ā
Ā
It is going to be hard but hard does not mean IMPOSSIBLE.
Ā
Successful people are not gifted. They worked hard for it. Ms. Arimbi and her team shared life advice to become successful at the right time.Ā
Ā
(09:44-10:24) I think you have to have the endurance for sure because ours is not a glamorous world that you see on television. It takes a quirky mind. You gotta be quick, you gotta be prepared in all kinds of situations and conditions. You gotta prepare for everything. Donāt take it too hard on yourself. I think thatās the most important thing you fail and you get up again. Have fun with it.Ā
Ā
(10:35-10:55) Iāve been working as a professional for about 20 years or 25 years. But to me, the most important thing is passion. Finding your passion is the paramount thing to do. You donāt become a chef because thatās the trend but because you love cooking.
Ā
(11:05-11:17) Just be courageous and donāt be afraid to break out of your comfort zone and try new things in being a chef.
Ā
(11:21-11:47) The most important thing is to have the attitude of being humble. Then, please remember that each and every one of us has a process of learning. We cannot be someone, in an instant. You need, perhaps go to culinary school and have to learn for 4 or 5 years in another restaurant. Finding a good mentor is mandatory because the mentor can give you what he got from the previous mentor.

Ā
Dreams donāt happen unless we start to action it now.
Ā
The things we do in the present molds and shapes our future. Ms. Budi pointed that out.
Ā
(01:30-01:59) It is fast because thatās what I want to do. I think a lot because of sometimes stress in the environment but I heal it with nature activities. After I learn it for many years, thereās no point to check on so much stress. It is better to do it instead of thinking about it.Ā
Ā
(02:08-02:23) I learn it myself because when I keep thinking it is not useful like just keep thinking and not doing it and thereās no result so better just do it and enjoy it.
Ā
(03:31-03:53) I tried to budget my money as much as I can so I manage the money for the portion for the building, a portion for my kidsā school, portion for the family, a portion for the maintenance of the house, the villas so I tried.Ā
Ā
(04:30-04:58) I met him 12 years ago and he crashed my motorcycle. The time when I met him, I was 19, and Iām about to buy my motorcycle. My motorcycle was very new then he crashed it. And he tried to hide the crashed motorcycle.Ā
Ā
(07:00-07:34) I learned to do accounting on my own from tutorials. When I was working years ago, thereās no computer so I learned on my own, by myself and by asking knowledgeable persons.
Ā
Push yourself because no oneās gonna do that for you.
Ā
For us to become who we wanted to be, we should try new things and push ourselves out from our normal boundaries. Ms. Budi shared the times when she pushed herself into her limits.
Ā
(07:52-08:19) It took a while to be able to have something. When I was young my mother always taught me if I make 100 thousand Rupiah, I have to save 50% of it. So every time I make money, I have to save 50% of it to use it in achieving my dreams.
Ā
(08:43-09:08) Food is very important, buying healthy food and supporting the kidsā activities is also important. I still use the money for fun but not using just to use it. I donāt go to shopping malls that often.Ā
Ā
(09:25-09:50) Iām thinking about 5 years later that it will be much expensive so I tried doing it now, forced myself for 5 years from now all materials and the working fee will be much higher so Iām doing it now.
Ā
(09:55-10:39) Sometimes, as a human being, there are times you tell yourself that itās not gonna work or I donāt like it and maybe there is deserving instead of investing. I started and bought the land and started to get the workers and because itās a long process sometimes I forced myself to keep on doing it and keeping the excitement.
It takes sweat, determination, and perseverance to make our dreams into reality.
Ā
All our dreams will come true if we have the courage to pursue them. Yes, itās gonna be a long process but everything will be worth it at the right time like Ms. Budi did in her life.
Ā
(10:50-10:54) To be motivated, I got to see the progress and be grateful. So learn to enjoy the process.Ā
Ā
(11:33-11:50) I have two boys that I need to support. In marriage, you still need things with fun together. Now, I learn not to rely so much on my husband.
Ā
(12:58-13:31) First, we need to be grateful. Be grateful for the things that we have. Move forward with the dream that we wanted to have. Start eating healthy food. Have enough sleep because it helps us to think better. Donāt compare our life to other people.

Ā
Women vs Culture?
Ā
Since then, it was used that women will just be at the house taking good care of the family and providing meals for the family. But as time goes by, women have been diverse in the world of business. Ms. Budi said:
Ā
(01:59-02:31) Few people are common but most women have been married and been a housewife because of the culture and they have to take care of the kids and everything so yeah, for me, when I was a child I grew up in not a rich family and I didnāt go to university. I only run until senior high school.
Ā
(02:39-03:15) I have many siblings so I didnāt much get from my parents. I have four brothers and four sisters because my mom could not use anything. She tried to use so that she canāt have many kids and she got so sick so she just accepted the kids as Godās gift.Ā
Ā
(04:20-04:43)Ā Now itās getting common with this modern life. The generation now is more like focusing on school and a happy career, not like 15 years ago itās not that much.
Ā
Dream big and aim that dream to be your reality.
Ā
In our younger years, we have people that we look up to and we envision ourselves to be like them in the future. This is what Ms. Budi shared as she flashback her childhood years.
Ā
(05:29-06:24) In the beginning, I didnāt think that I want villas.Ā I just want to have my own house. We just kept on doing the business so we were able to save money and able to buy some lands and credit at that time. But now itās already paid off.Ā
Ā
(06:35-06:58) When I was a child, I was surrounded by business people and it inspired me to be a businesswoman. I learn how to make my own money when I was 7 years old because my mom taught me.Ā
Ā
(07:22-07:47) When Iām in the process of building Tradewind villas, 6 minutes away from Bhutan itās called Peaceful Villa which is surrounded by nature, water sound and much water fountains.
Ā
Simple life out of extravagant life status.
Ā
Financial independence makes us able to buy all the luxuries in the world. But we should not forget where we started and with this independence, we should be able to help with the poor ones. Ms. Budi mentioned:
Ā
(08:28-09:07) My life here, I donāt really go to supermalls and buy expensive clothes and everything. I dreamt that I wanna have my own business so I donāt rely on somebody for financial needs. And also I can help people around by hiring people to work with me so they have jobs.Ā
Ā
(09:23-09:38) We are blessed and we keep on trying and we didnāt give up and less on buying unimportant stuff and just be focused on achieving that dream.
Ā
(10:45-10:55) We are teaching our children to never give up and keep on trying. Failure is an experience and it is a lesson.Ā
