This is true whether you’re blissfully employed, starting your own company or running a corporation. So why is it that people still ask me to help them with social media — in exchange for coffee? Don’t get me wrong. I like coffee.

Offices are abandoning cubicles in favor of shared desks and wide-open common spaces, and rather than sitting at their desks working independently, school children are placed in groups. It seems that a never-ending “ping” has become our culture’s omnipresent background noise, instantly informing us of every text, tweet, and notification.

Shutterstock A well-orchestrated team depends on everyone doing their job, at the time they are supposed to do it, yielding the results they are supposed to yield. Everyone likes to think they are accountable. Are they? As a leader, you need to ensure that your team actually is accountable.

It’s easy to find yourself attracted to big names when you’re looking for speakers for your events or conferences, almost like they’re shiny objects or something. But I’ve been to enough conferences (as both an attendee and a keynote speaker) to learn that organizers can put themselves into some pretty bad positions by getting distracted by celebrity and not thinking through the right speakers for their events.

Shutterstock Imagine that your boss walks into your office and says, “The company is doing some restructuring and, starting next week, you’re going to report to someone new.” That’s certainly a change! Some people look at that situation optimistically and think, “That’s great, I can’t wait to see what new opportunities are available!” Others, however, look at that same exact statement from the boss and immediately experience fear and dread.
