Shutterstock There are a few select phrases that no job seeker wants to hear in an interview. “Go ahead and see yourself out,” is one of them. “Did you know that your fly is down?” or “Please, stop crying,” are likely others. But—let’s face it—those aren’t exactly commonplace (at least, I certainly hope not). However, there’s one dreaded set of words that’s sure to crop up in any job interview.

Reports are mixed on if millennials are actually job-hopping more frequently than previous generations. What is clear is that job-hopping is becoming the norm for the average twenty something. One LinkedIn study says millennials job-hop more than their predecessors, however this only contains data LinkedIn members actually report. Gen X and Baby Boomer members of the site may be less likely to report their extended history of employment, but rather the few most recent jobs.

Uh-oh. American workers aged 50 or older think there’s nearly a 1 in 2 chance they’ll still be working at 70 (see chart below), but many employees who expect to work longer are exactly the ones who’ll likely be least able to do so. That’s the upshot of the new, frightening (for employees and employers) 2015/2016 Global Benefits Attitudes Survey by Willis Towers Watson, a global benefits advisory consultant. I read a ton of anecdotal articles about what young people want most at work. My general reaction is “Does this non-millennial author even know a millennial?” But occasionally, I find something that seems consistent with the majority of my generation. I had the latter response when I discovered the recent IBM findings on millennials at work that circulated its way around the internet.

Shutterstock Now that the blinders are off and we can see clearly that work is a human place, we can also acknowledge that many of the time-honored, traditional workplace policies were not built for the age we are living in now. Most of the contents of the standard HR and leadership playbook is out of date and unsuited to the Knowledge Economy, but the old policies hang on.

Today’s business world is so precarious may of us don’t know if we’ll be in the same company from one week to the next, let alone report to the same person.
