If I just hated my job and that were the end of the story, I would look for a new job, but I can’t do that because my husband has one more year to go in his PhD program. When he graduates he’ll get a job somewhere else — in another city or even another country. This job, the one I hate, is going to look great on my resume. The institute is a cash cow for the university.

Ten years ago I graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and believing that the sky was the limit. With my diploma in one hand, and a gifted copy of Oh the Places You’ll Go in the other, I was most preoccupied with how to pack most efficiently for a trip to Europe I was about to take. There was once a time when technology reigned supreme, and investors flocked to developments that had the potential for scale and monetization. It was one of those situations where the CEO was absolutely convinced that the company needed someone new on the team (that’s me), but the other managers were not on board with the idea.
