Dear Liz, I was the Art Director for a publishing company for 25 years. When the company was sold six years ago, I had a lot of notice that I needed to find a new job. I got a job with our local newspaper. Obviously print newspapers are not the wave of the future, but at my age I don’t need a job for the next thirty years.

Innovation remains all the rage in many organizations. Every leader is hoping for that next great idea to come from somewhere to advance an ambitious strategy. Still, many employees hold back their most creative ideas and radical thinking from their boss. Unsure if pushing the envelope will be welcomed or dismissed, many stop short of letting their most disruptive ideas loose.

“I had such a good day at work today!” said Janine, who had been unhappy and frustrated in her job for months. “That’s good news!” we said. “What happened at work today?” “My boss made a little request that kind of mushroomed,” said Janine. “My manager Margie stopped by my desk this morning and said that she has a group of visitors coming next week and wants to welcome them with a quick introduction meeting and a presentation.

There are many immigrants at the helm of the world’s largest companies. In fact, 40% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. Google’s Sergey Brin, eBay’s Pierre Omidyar, Intel’s Andrew Grove, the list goes on. Why do so many expats seem to have entrepreneurialism in their blood? As an “expat-preneur” who moved to the U.S.

Carolyn Rafaelian founded fashion jewelry company Alex and Ani in 2004, taking over what had been her father’s Rhode Island jewelry factory to manufacture the new age, celestial-chic bangles that have become the brand’s staple. Now, it will offer essential tools like screening and treatment, including teletherapy services. This is definitely something to cheer about during Mental Health Month—or in any month, really. A giant like Walgreens can give a huge boost to mental health awareness.

I’ve experienced both, which is why I urge people to gauge the leadership of an organization prior to joining the company. I wanted to learn about why people choose a journey of leadership.
