They loved Ruth’s pitch and praised her on her insight. Ruth and the client moved on to the negotiation stage. They got down to brass tacks about Ruth’s consulting fees. Ruth had a price in mind for the consulting project. She and her prospective client went back and forth a few times.

On gig site Fiverr, freelancers offer their services for $5 and up apiece in areas as diverse as graphics and design, writing, music and audio, video and animation, programming and more. While $5 for a project seems like a pittance — actually $4 once Fiverr takes its cut — a number of workers on the site have turned it into a lucrative platform, earning six figures a year.
