It is a huge disappointment to grow up and realize that most of what we’ve been taught about how to be successful is bad advice. We were taught “Just work hard at whatever job you get, and things will work out.” That’s false. Working hard at your job does not get you much.

I assumed they’d have tons of questions about a variety of different things, and in all honesty, I was prepared to answer a lot of them. (Photo credit: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg) IBM wants to make Watson, its cognitive computing system, more useful in the “Internet of Things.” On Thursday, IBM announced its partnering with networking tech giant Cisco to take IBM Watson out of the cloud and put it closer to all the machines and sensors collecting massive troves of data. IBM Watson and its business analytic software will now be able to run on Cisco’s gateway gear.

But this doesn’t mean that the people behind these fantastic feats are miracle workers. I’ve got the impression, however, that sometimes they are expected to be. A somewhat alarming statistic highlighted in a recent Gartner report is that only 50% of Chief Data Officers are successful in their posts. This is partly due to the high turnover rates.
