The team in control of NASA’s Mars Rover spacecraft now have Big Data driven analytical engines at their fingertips. The same open source Elastic Search technology used by the likes of Netflix and Goldman Sachs is now being put to use planning the actions of the Curiosity rover, which landed on the red planet in 2012.

More than half – 56% – of global workers surveyed believe that you can only get a meaningful bump in salary from switching companies. And while more would like to have a clearer picture of how pay is determined at their companies, in the U.S., more men (65%) believe they have a better understanding of how pay is determined at their companies, compared with women (53%).

If only young people were coached on the nature of fear and trust, how much anguish could be avoided! When I started working, I didn’t know it was possible to make your boss furious with you by doing your job too well. When I was just starting my career and my boss would glare at me, I assumed I’d done something wrong. I would stay at work until seven or eight o’clock at night trying to make amends.

According to Deloitte’s first quarter (Q1 2016) CFO Signals survey, the CFO’s surveyed expect revenues, earnings, capital spending and domestic hiring to decline given the market volatility. A pullback in hiring during shaky economic times mirrors what I saw as an in-house recruiter. Open positions would routinely get put on hold or reassigned to a contract role or shifted to a more junior level, at the sign of market weakness.

I walked out into the middle of the street without looking both ways, forgot to pay parking tickets, lost debit and credit cards regularly and, when I became self-employed, convinced myself everything would just work out. My “I’ll just make it” mentality is characteristic of my generation: Millennials are more optimistic about our futures than any other generation ever has been.
