The German School of Cello Playing

Romberg (1767-1841), regarded by history as the founder of the German School of Cello Playing.

In this episode, I cite two works from the 1800's.

The second source has much to say about Romberg, and is within its scope to do so since it a tome on the history of the Violoncello.

According to the bio in Violoncellisten der Gegenwart: In Wort und Bild (Cellists of the Present: In Word and Picture), Becker was a composer, beginning at the age of 15. He was even reputed to have written a cello concerto that was well-known on the concert stage.

Although there is no music, that I know of (in the public domain, or otherwise) this cellist was a game-changing artist for cello technique and interpretation. Come along to hear a bit more from a bio written during his peak period, about 40 years before his death.

So far, this project of Forgotten Cello Music has been active for over a year.

The German cellist Sebastian Lee was quite a prolific composer of etudes for the cello. He wrote for ALL levels of cello playing. First Steps in Violoncello Playing, Op. 101 are duets in which which the student part begins with open strings, progressing to the use of all 4 fingers on all strings, with varied bowings. 

12 Etudes-caprices caractéristiques, Op. 100 are intermediate level caprices placed squarely from first to fourth position. Inventive and demanding for lower position music, yet musical and fun.

This cellist may have been a busy composer, yet only his Technical Studies seem to be remembered and practiced. In it contains many exercises for finger agility, strengthening, accuracy, and speed. He was known to be a first-rate musician and played with the likes of Brahms, concertizing his whole life long.

Joseph Wasielewski's hugely important book about the history of the cello caught my attention in a search I did a while ago. There is a short entry about Julius Klengel. Upon reading I realized it was somewhat different to the short bio from "Violoncellisten der Gegenwart". It was worth my while and I think it will be interesting to you as well.

August Nölck, "10 Etudes" Op. 24

Recently unearthed and played, I recorded ALL 10 of these intermediate etudes. They accompany this podcast episode as excerpts. Each etude number corresponds to the etude number talked about in this Episode. As you listen to my commentary an excerpt from the same etude plays softly in the background. 

Take the time to investigate these works of technical persuasion. You will be the better for it.

Hugo Schlemüller

Today's reading from "Violoncellisten der Gegenwart: In Wort und Bild" (Hamburg 1903)--

Schlemüller was an active cellist and composer. He wrote some engaging music for the beginner to the lower intermediate levels.
