In July 2021, what began as a routine traffic stop in Essex, Maryland became one of the most tragic and disturbing child death cases in recent memory.

During a late-night stop, a Baltimore County police officer noticed an overwhelming odor of decomposition coming from the trunk of a vehicle driven by Nicole Johnson. What was inside was far more horrifying than anyone expected: the decomposing remains of two young children — her 7-year-old niece, Joshlyn Johnson, and her 5-year-old nephew, Larry O’Neal.
