On this week’s edition of the Access Hour, we listen back to the 2018 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award winner for Education, Sara Goldrick-Rab, who spoke on April 10, 2018 in UofL’s Ekstrom Library Chao Auditorium. Sara Goldrick-Rab, a professor in Temple University’s College of Education, published her findings in her award-winning 2016 book, “Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid and the Betrayal of the American Dream.”

In it, Goldrick-Rab finds that U.S. students have been left behind by soaring costs combined with a financial aid system that has not kept up with demand. The result is a generation that, during a time when a college education is ever more important, is unable to get ahead because of crushing debt and unfinished degrees.

“Goldrick-Rab asserts the blame rests with the financial aid system,” said Marion Hambrick, award director and faculty member in UofL’s College of Education and Human Development. “She argues the higher education structure—including how financial aid is calculated and awarded, how costs of attendance are calculated, and how higher education institutions are managed—needs a significant overhaul.”

She details students’ struggles with not only tuition and books, but also lack of transportation, homelessness and food insecurity, and offers several solutions, including a public sector-focused “first degree free” program.

“This book is intended to be a wake-up call,” writes Goldrick-Rab, who teaches higher education policy and sociology. “It brings the lives of students pursuing college degrees front and center and unveils their financial struggles.”

The University of Louisville presents the Grawemeyer Awards annually for outstanding works in music composition, ideas improving world order, psychology, and education, and gives a religion prize jointly with Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The 2018 winners presented free lectures about their award-winning ideas when they visited Louisville in April to accept their $100,000 prizes.

The Green New Deal is a proposal for how to transition, equitably, to an economy driven by clean energy.

In this episode, we look at the number of jobs that will be created by a transition away from passenger cars to efficient mass transit.

Also, did you know that the government is and always has been a major player in the economy. Usually, that role is disguised and hidden under the so-called Defense Department.

But the government could use its economic power for positive technologies, not the technologies associated with war.

We talk about these issues and more.

When we transition to renewable energy, how many jobs will that create and why?

We continue discussing the Green New Deal, a 15 page document published by the Green Party. I'm not endorsing the Green Party, just borrowing their literature.

As usual, I talk about how the war machine is a threat to our very existence. I also ask what kind of people do Americans want to be on the world stage. Do we want to be feared? Or do we want to be appreciated? Do we want to be known for our kindness or our cruelty? Currently we are feared and quite often known for our cruelty. That needs to change, for humanitarian reasons, but also for our survival. We cannot forever be homicidal, as a nation, without also jeopardizing our very existence. We must learn to treat others as we would want to be treated.

It's one thing to talk about problems. It's another thing to have solutions. The Green New Deal is a comprehensive set of solutions to the climate crisis, as well as other environmental problems, and social justice issues.
