Special Series: FORWARD THINKING ON COVID-19
How do homeless people avoid exposure to Covid-19? And where do they quarantine if they test positive for the virus? New York City’s Department of Homeless Services had little in place to deal with a pandemic and over 60,000 people remain in shelters struggling to quarantine. Mental Health Peer Specialist, EMT, and advocate for the homeless, Allilsa Fernandez, tells Laura how the shelter organizing movement is applying strategies like mutual aid to fill the gaps in the system. She says the nation is now recognizing what communities of color have long known and practiced: reliance on one another in the absence of support from the state.
About the series:
In the midst of a public health and economic crisis, we know much of the news you’re hearing is bad. The course of this pandemic is hard to predict. But there will be a time after this immediate crisis. What then? To answer this question, we’re producing a new series called “Forward Thinking on Covid-19.” Each week, guests on The LF Show offer their best forward looking perspectives on what needs to happen in their area of expertise. This series brings you the stories of forward-thinking people and lifts up actionable, real life models of collective care and mutual aid.
Laura Flanders and Friends Crew: Laura Flanders, along with Sabrina Artel, Jeremiah Cothren, Veronica Delgado, Janet Hernandez, Jeannie Hopper, Gina Kim, Sarah Miller, Nat Needham, David Neuman, and Rory O’Conner.
