  • S1 E8 | Dave Snowling - Communication is our best tool

In today's episode we chat with Dave Snowling.  Dave has had 47 years’ experience within the building industry, mainly involved in the supply of joinery products. He was employed as an apprentice at 16 years old and stayed with the company for a total of 23 years of which the latter years were in senior managerial positions.  That company become the largest joinery manufacturer within the UK.  In 1999 Dave joined a small family owned joinery company, and helped grow the company, becoming the MD and a shareholder.

In 2010 Dave started his own business as a consultant working for several different companies involved in wood processing.

We chat about the challenges he had transitioning from employment to being a business owner and effectively then being on his own.  As well as managing teams and people problems and how he challenged his team, giving them accountability to grow and move forward.  It really was an insightful chat, and the overarching theme of the conversation was the importance of communication and how this is the best tool in our toolbox as leaders.

  • S1 E7 | Matt Roberts of Matthew Olivers - Recruitment, but not as you know it!

In today's episode we chat with Matt Roberts, who runs a recruitment agency called Matthew Olivers.  He is not that stereotypical recruitment agent that springs to mind when you say recruitment - quite the opposite!

We talked about Matt's transition from employee to business owner, the current talent shortage (and what employers can do to stand out in a crowded market), the adoption of flexible working and work from home, Matt's take on leadership - managing teams with respect and trust 🙌🏻, as well as what success means to Matt.

The book Dan mentions in the episode (and Matt and wrote down!!) is: Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life https://amzn.eu/d/3LWNtZa  (We have no affiliation with the author - just a recommendation from one business owner to another 😊)

  • S1 E5 | Sarah Oakley - Founder of Brave Bird Club on her first 9 months in business and bravery
In today's episode we speak to Sarah Oakley, the founder of the Brave Bird Club, who is on a mission to inspire everyday she-roes to find their brave through the tougher times in life.  Addressing the many social issues we face today, in an unequivocal example of women supporting women, she created knickers to be worn on ‘those’ days when you need to gain inner strength and find your brave. Sarah now heads up a growing Brave Bird community through social media and regular podcasts.
We spoke about Sarah's inspiration to set up Brave Bird Club, the work she does to help those with tough times and how asking for help is sometimes actually the bravest thing someone can do.  We then moved on to Sarah's move to Spain, and running her business from there, with a factory in a third country!
We also chatted about what success means to us, and that work life balance theme cropped up again!

  • S1 E4 | James Wilkinson - finding the balance that works for you

In today's episode we speak to James Wilkinson - a corporate and commercial lawyer, who routinely advises clients on M&A transactions, capital fundraisings, shareholder agreements and general commercial arrangements.

We spoke about James' journey from making major life decisions at 16 to giving up a well paid Corporate London role to move out, take a pay cut and spend more time with his wife and children.  Really ensuring that work fits around family life and giving a good balance of family and work.  Valuing time over money - you can always make more money, but you can't make more time!

  • S1 E3 | James Sharp - Submariner to Business Owner

In this episode we spoke to James Sharp (Cheryl's husband) about his varied career and journey to becoming a business owner.  There were tears, there was laughter, and a real good natter!

James started his working life serving in the Iraq conflict in 2003 and spent five years as a Submariner in the Royal Navy.  During this time he received the Iraq war medal and Nato medal for his role in protecting the shores during the Athens Olympics in 2004.

After leaving the Royal Navy James went on to a 12 year career in customer service management on the railways, managing multiple teams of 60+ and overseeing the day to day operations of his region.

James is forever decorating at home, and absolutely loves seeing the difference something simple like a fresh coat of paint, a different colour, or even a feature wall can make to a room.  James left the railway to help Cheryl build her business using his team and HR skills to set up one arm of the business, but after perfecting his skills whilst making over their own home (more than once!) and helping a few friends the decorating bug got stronger and stronger, and his company Pink Pig Decorating was born!

During the episode we talked about James' journey and all his learnings that he has brought into his business.

  • S1 E2 | Meet Co-Host Daniel

Hi, 👋🏻 I’m Daniel, and I’m a Financial Planner who wants to teach business owners, businesses and their families the skill of managing their finances in a thoughtful, proactive and purposeful way. I am a diploma qualified Financial Planner and an Entrepreneur.

I have over a decade of experience working for both large banks and small financial advisory practices -sitting on investment committees, training people and advising clients. Aiming to make sure people and businesses get the advice and education they deserve about money.

My success is down to approaching finance in a simple yet highly effective way – personalised,  empathetic, relatable and non-judgemental. Offering services ranging from financial planning,  cashflow modelling and a healthy money mindset and behaviours that match the individual and/or business.

When not in the office, you can find me with my family. When able, I support charities in fundraising. This has led me to doing some amazing things like sky-diving and trekking 26 miles along  Hadrian’s Wall in just under 8 hours. I also enjoy keeping fit and can be found at the gym regularly.

  • S1 E1 | Meet Co-Host Cheryl

For our first two episodes we've interviewed each other so you can get to know us a little better 😊

So first up, 👋🏻 I’m Cheryl, I’m the founder of Pink Pig Financials, a lifestyle-focused firm of Accountants in the UK. It’s got to be one of the scariest but most rewarding things I have ever done - I launched Pink Pig to build a more flexible life around my family, and I believe all business owners can work towards their ideal lifestyle from day one of setting up a business. A domestic abuse survivor , I am deeply passionate about providing the support and confidence I wish I’d had to people taking their first steps into business.

As a mum and step-mum to a tribe of 5, I fully understand the juggle of work and home life. Driven by a hard-working and fabulous team of ladies, Pink Pig Financials makes the accounting process as quick and simple as possible, so our clients can grow a profitable business inside their world, not separate from it. Seeing my clients find the right balance and achieve their life goals is what brings me joy.

When I’m not spending time with the clients or the team, you’ll find me with her husband and kids (and my pup Ziggy), probably on a golf course!
