Pope Francis extended a similar invitation In his homily at the opening of the Synod. “Come, you who are weary and oppressed,  come, you who have lost your way or feel far away, come, you who have closed the doors to hope: the church is here for you!” And then, in an ad lib, the Pope added: “Tutti, tutti, tutti!” Everyone, everyone, everyone!

God does not put any miserable wretches to death. In taking the place of the one who is cast out, Jesus suffers death, so that we can begin to understand what we were doing while at the same time be set free from having to live that way.

Immediately before today’s teaching, Jesus told about a shepherd going in search of a lost sheep. Jesus is describing our Father in heaven who will do whatever it takes to seek and find what is lost.

When Jesus begins to teach his disciples that he must suffer at the hands of the people, Peter is scandalized. His ideal is the same as ours, worldly success, and he tries to instill it into his master. He turns his own desire into a model that Jesus should imitate.

She says, “Yes, Lord.”  (Notice she changes his title) and literally turns the table on him: “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” In calling him “Lord,”  she reminds Jesus’ of his universal outreach.

The word that we use for the long center section in the church where the assembly gathers is called the nave. This word comes from the same Latin word that gives us the word Navy. The question is the same for us as it was for the disciples in the boat: Is God with us or not?
