In Matthew’s Gospel, when the Pharisees ask their last tricky question, Jesus does indeed out-trick them. But he doesn't do it by giving the right answer. He out-tricks them by actually being the right answer.

God does not put any miserable wretches to death. In taking the place of the one who is cast out, Jesus suffers death, so that we can begin to understand what we were doing while at the same time be set free from having to live that way.
