The Jurassic franchise continues as Nick, Scott, and guest Andrew Darowski are on an ill-fated rescue mission to save the lost son of two divorced parents from the genetically engineered theme park monsters of Isla Soma.

With The Lost World proving to be another hit, Universal was ready to make another Jurassic Park, but this time it would be without Steven Spielberg and without any Michael Crichton source material. Enter director Joe Johnston: a filmmaker with proven bona fides and a track record in visual effects, ready and willing to jump into a Jurassic sequel with both feet. Unfortunately for him, this journey would be another troubled production that resulted in 2001’s JURASSIC PARK III, a quick and dirty creature feature that audiences quickly dismissed as “not my Jurassic”, despite the return of a fan-favorite character (“Alan!”).

Michael Crichton’s 1990 bestseller had already been courted by some of the biggest directors in Hollywood before finally getting the green light with Spielberg at the helm. The prolific director would make this innovative science fiction thriller in tandem with the deeply personal, equally ambitious Schindler’s List. The latter would prove to be the most emotionally taxing project of his career, but this first part of the Jurassic era would find Spielberg working from a place of childlike joy and inspiration, while also speed-running through a highly technical shoot with the skills and knowledge of a blockbuster veteran.

Six years after the sequel that was supposed to restart the franchise, Walt Disney Studios was finally able to release its fifth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie in the summer of 2017, DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES.

It was not an easy journey. A long, arduous search for new directors finally ended with Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, directors of the Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki, but that would only be the first of Disney’s challenges. Script issues, on-set injuries, and an increasingly erratic movie star would all stand in the way of bringing this final voyage to life.

Disney began the 2010s at the start of a very different era than the one it found itself in just eight years prior. Marvel was in its clutches, a deal with LucasFilm was on the horizon and its seminal PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise was launching the first of hopefully many sequels in the wake of Gore Verbinski’s expensive, polarizing trilogy. Disney wanted a cheaper budget, a simpler story, and even bigger grosses. In the end, they would get two out of three. This is 2011’s ON STRANGER TIDES.

Replacing Verbinski as director would be Academy Award-winner Rob Marshall, who quickly filled the film’s supporting cast with big names like Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Stephen Graham (as fan-favorite character Scrum).

Guest Phil Dragash had a dream for a very different fourth Pirates adventure, but as with many of the plans laid by Disney and company, destiny had other fates in mind.
